Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in East Whitwell? Don't Start It

Never start the motor. While the petrol is still sitting in the tank and the engine has not yet turned over, a tank drain is nearly always all it takes — and that's decided in the coming few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled cars where they sit, across East Whitwell and the rest of South Yorkshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway. We will tell you what your next step will be. Contact us — that happens ahead of anything else.

The next five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • Whenever you drive, your pump and the injectors suffer. That is why you don't start the car, and why you don't trust it once it has started. The thing about petrol in a diesel specifically — the part drivers get wrong — is that it drives away fine for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor generally won't run at all, which stops the driver and stops the damage with them. This one lets you drive on.
  • Flicking the ignition on often primes that system, and priming is what moves petrol out of your tank and into the pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps greased on its way through, before it combusts. Petrol handles the burning and none of the oiling. Leave your ignition off.
  • Don't dilute it. Diesel put on top removes nothing, and so all you get is more of what was already there, because percentage is not how a diesel fuel system copes with petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The type makes no difference.
  • Sit tight if it is safe to. Hazards on, motor off, keep the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Cedar Close, anywhere — an awkward place for us is better than a started diesel, and nothing is quicker for us to deal with than a car that never moved.
  • Before you call, have your whereabouts. Anything nearest to you with a name on it, plus a postcode starting S36 1 — that's what settles whether the technician arrives or circles.
  • Three replies decide the full call-out: the stuff you poured in, the approximate amount of it, plus if it has been turning since. The number is 0333 366 0103.

Pump-side drains for petrol in a diesel

Much of this work begins at a pump, meaning a large share of that ends up completed at one. The drain typically gets done right there. Still on the forecourt at JET? Given the owner's consent, that's a spot our technicians work, and regularly.

Nowhere else except a garage can this be stopped with the engine still untouched. Anywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the car was switched on and driven to get there, which means fuel was drawn from the tank, through the filter then into your high-pressure pump. That's not a catastrophe, and we can still deal with it where it stands. It does mean the lines and your filter need cleaning as well as your tank, and that's settled by the few seconds between seeing the till receipt and reaching for the keys.

The staff will generally offer to roll the car clear of the petrol pump so the next driver can get past. That is worth doing. Cranking the car for four car lengths? Not a chance.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in East Whitwell

How much fuel the pump has pulled is what we are really asking — not how long ago any of it was. So the enquiry we hope for goes like this: diesel Nissan Qashqai, a couple of litres of unleaded, a couple of miles done, now switched off at Spar.

Straightforward job, this one — till somebody takes it home. A diesel Mercedes C-Class sitting at The Red Grouse with petrol in the tank loses nothing by sitting there overnight, and so park the car and phone us once it's light. Expect a query about that run there, though. Brief and chilly is precisely where petrol fails to burn, and what will not burn can get past the piston rings and into the oil.

Calling from near Stocksbridge Christian Centre? Three things help us. The filler — which side of your car it is on. Room for our van beside you, without the road being blocked. And whether anything has run since the fill-up. The location itself hardly matters: on-street is where our engineers work most, and we'd much rather have a cramped bay than a motor someone has driven somewhere easier. Then it's a drain for the Peugeot 208, a filter change where there is one worth changing, lines rinsed, fresh fuel put round the entire circuit. By now the worst of it is in the lines and not your tank.

Petrol in a diesel does its harm as a share, which is the reason our technicians ask at all: the same few litres waiting in a nearly empty tank make a far stronger mixture than they would in a full one. And petrol is rated on how well it withstands igniting under pressure — the opposite of what a diesel wants — so a stronger mixture knocks more, smokes more, goes flatter. None of which means you need an answer ready. Almost no one knows how full your tank was in a motor picked up two days ago, and we work that out on site. Do ring the hire or company firm first, though: some agreements want them to sign off the work, and that's far quicker settled before than after. Then phone us about the Citroen C3 near Stocksbridge Rugby Club.

Cleared, not cleared — that is what a diesel Volkswagen Touran which got as far as The Salvation Army - Stocksbridge needs. Running a diesel puts the mix into the filter, the lines, your pump and its rail, none of which empties with the tank, so by now the tank holds the smaller part of the problem.

Will our technicians serve your part of East Whitwell?

As a residential suburb, East Whitwell gets a frequent visit, while the villages close by go along on the same run: Pot House and Spink Hall, Shay House and Hollin Busk, Bracken Moor.

There are pages for most towns across South Yorkshire, and the ones listed above are merely the closest neighbours — so yours being absent from this list means nothing at all about if our engineers come. Ring us and enquire instead of assuming — boundaries especially, and wherever your satnav can struggle with.

The map shows the ground this page covers. Your car doesn't need to come to us. We operate across the lot — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Stopped at the kerb somewhere around East Whitwell?

A chance to stop anywhere safe does not come to everybody. If you worked it out after setting off and finished up along the verge on Chestnut Avenue, or in a lay-by somewhere with your hazards on, that's a normal call for us instead of an odd one.

Clear of the motor while it is not safe to be there, with it when it is. Don't restart the motor to nurse it somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging that blend further into the system. We will send our van to a tricky location without any fuss, and for the vehicle that is much better than carrying on.

Run it already? Stop, then check this

This is where the local M1 counts, under 10 miles from East Whitwell. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will frequently manage both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is seldom a neat stop. Power falls away, your idle goes uneven, and there may be some smoke.

Don't restart it to move it. Get off at the next sensible exit and switch off. It affects what our technicians bring, so say so when you phone: on a longer drive — anything approaching the under 10 miles to the nearest city — take it the petrol has been through the filter, the pump and your injectors.

A bit about East Whitwell

East Whitwell is a suburban area situated in South Yorkshire, approximately 8 miles from Sheffield, and is characterized by its semi-detached housing stock. East Whitwell sits inland, at an elevation of 256 metres, and is close to nearby places such as Pot House, Spink Hall, and Shay House. East Whitwell has a population of around 3941 residents and is located within commuting distance of major cities, including Sheffield. East Whitwell is also relatively far from London, at a distance of 149 miles.

Once our technicians get to you around East Whitwell: what we do

  • We ask first, price after. What went in? How much? Has your motor run? Those answers shape what the work actually is.
  • Your tank gets emptied of everything.
  • Lines purged, filter cleared. Whatever remains afterwards isn't the thing that started the trouble.
  • Priming follows, once fresh diesel is in.
  • It is run with new diesel in it, and our engineers make sure that it's running properly.

The vehicle is then ready for you to drive away. We do everything wherever your car has stopped, which means it never has to be taken to a garage, and when it has been spotted quickly, it is very rare for there to be permanent damage.

East Whitwell AdBlue removal is a separate job

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first instruction is unchanged — the motor stays off — whereas this issue underneath it is a distinct one altogether. Petrol thins your diesel and removes the protection your fuel system relies on. Corrosion and deposits are what a diesel tank gets instead, because AdBlue is urea in water.

Frequently the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the full story lives on its own East Whitwell page. Both are ours to handle.

East Whitwell costs for a petrol-in-diesel drain

Truthfully, no single figure fits on a page like this. The job changes. Here is what varies it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, measured against how much that tank holds.
  • AdBlue or petrol, whichever was put in.
  • Where the car is, and whether a technician can sensibly reach and work on it.

Tell us what your car is, how much went in, and if the engine has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range. If it isn't urgent — your car is at home and going nowhere — works too.

Petrol in diesel: frequent questions around East Whitwell

I'm on a forecourt around East Whitwell. Can you drain it here?

A good portion of this work takes place there, so yes. Our technicians work at Murco and the other forecourts locally all the time, with the site's permission — tell us which one you're at when you phone and we will tell you if our engineers can work there.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Ratio settles it rather than litres — and more than either, whether your engine has run. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a different matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is needed is whether that blend has been drawn through the fuel system.

Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What now?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then switch off and keep it off. Driving is what shifts the problem from your tank into the pump and injectors — but it's salvageable much more often than motorists expect, and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart it.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

It is not a change, and so a drain then flush carried out correctly doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty. What's likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for your engine to stay off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a different problem and it doesn't restore what petrol has thinned. Petrol remains in that tank later, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no break from it.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

There's no need to bring it to a dealership, since our technicians drain and clean your car wherever it is.

You, and the vehicle, still together?

That engine stays off.

Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere safe, switch off, then let it stay that way. Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that is the best position to be in. People fear this much more than they need to.
