Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Eastbrook? Don't Start It

Do not turn on the engine. While the fuel is still inside the tank and your engine has not yet turned over, a drain is nearly always all it needs — and that is settled in the next few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled vehicles where they sit, all over Eastbrook and the remainder of The Vale of Glamorgan, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive. A single ring our way is plenty: we can explain what happens next. Do that straight away.

Now what? Petrol in a diesel, in turn

  • Never crank it — and don't believe it when it fires up. That is the bit most people have wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol engine given diesel typically just will not run, and so the person stops and the harm halts with them. A diesel given petrol usually starts, idles and drives off perfectly well for a couple of miles. It isn't fine. It's grinding that fuel system while you drive.
  • Two tasks, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps your high-pressure pump and injectors protected. Petrol only manages the one. Which is why the car's ignition is left off also — flick it on and you usually prime the system, and that's petrol leaving that tank for exactly those components.
  • Topping up removes nothing. It hands you a bigger tank of the same mix, since a diesel fuel system does not handle petrol by percentage as that advice assumes — so don't add diesel on top to weaken it. Grade is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • A car that hasn't shifted is the quickest one to handle, and so stay where you are if you safely can. Parked on the verge on Eastbrook Close? Hazards on, and keep it there. A tricky location works for us better than a started motor.
  • Check where you are before phoning. A postcode that starts CF64 4, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise our van circles instead of turning up.
  • Ring 0333 366 0103. Say what was put in, about how many litres, plus whether the car has fired. These three facts shape the entire call-out.

The high-pressure fuel pump spent that morning commute working on a fluid that had lost most of the protection it is designed around. Diesel greases that pump, and the fuel injectors with it, before any of your fuel burns; petrol does the burning and none of the protecting. So imagine a diesel Volkswagen Passat, filled at quarter past eight, taken in to work, and parked standing at the nearest station till the penny drops around eleven. Three hours of sitting have altered nothing about it. The few miles before that did a lot, which is why the thing we ask you is about distance rather than hours. Phone us. Keep the vehicle precisely where it stands.

The difficult part is that bay, not your fuel. Cars either side of you, a trolley shelter behind, and from time to time a height limit on the way in that settles whether a technician can reach you at all — so when you phone from a car park like the one at Tesco, mention how much clearance there is about you and which way round the car is. Those our technicians cover frequently. Should there be no space to work next to the diesel BMW 3 Series, it gets moved with your engine off, and not out of fuss over a couple of seconds of running: priming takes place at every start, more of that mix departs the tank for the pump, and two shunts into a roomier space have silently made a worse job of what was simply a vehicle sitting still.

Somebody will urge you to move the car out of the gateway and fix it later. Please don't. A wrongly fuelled diesel Peugeot 308 on the zig-zags at the local primary school is an inconvenience; the same motor started three more times to be courteous is a fuel system and not a tank. Each restart primes the fuel lines and draws more petrol past the fuel filter then into your pump. Stay put, let them moan, then call us.

Out there fine, back flat. If that was the trip to Seel Park, look at that tank. Diesel gets diluted by petrol, and thin fuel slips past the fine clearances meant to build injection pressure — so every further mile the diesel Ford Focus covered, the less pressure it held onto. Somewhere sensible, switch off, phone us.

Off the forecourt, receipt read, a few hundred yards, parked close to Dinas Powys Community Library. For a diesel Dacia Duster whose engine has turned, that is about the best version there is. Ring us, and let the car stand with the ignition alone. Short assists, genuinely — but a start is a start and a drive is a drive, and your filter has had thinned fuel through it, and so has the pump. Which is why your lines get cleaned and not just the tank drained.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Eastbrook

Clearing petrol from the diesel on a forecourt

Forecourts are where this job usually starts, and where a big share of that ends. Our technicians work on station forecourts regularly, with the owner's agreement, and so if you're still at Texaco that is usually where the drain takes place.

Before the engine has run — the forecourt is the single spot it is stopped. Anywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and driven to get there, which means fuel was pulled from your tank, through the fuel filter and into your high-pressure pump. That's not a catastrophe, and we can still put it right where it sits. It does mean the fuel lines and the filter need flushing as well as that tank, and that is decided by the few seconds between seeing the till receipt and reaching for your key.

Out from the pump, the next driver can get through — so yes, let the attendants help you move the car. Very much worth it. Four vehicle lengths isn't worth a start.

Parts we reach around Eastbrook

These same runs bring us to Murch, Dinas Powis, Westra, Cogan and Michaelston-le-Pit as well as Eastbrook, which is a residential suburb.

If yours is not on this list that does not mean we never come — there are dedicated pages for the majority of locations around The Vale of Glamorgan, and the ones listed above are merely the nearest neighbours. Contact us to check instead of presuming — boundaries above all, and wherever a satnav tends to misread.

This map shows the area this page covers. Roadside, forecourt, drive, car park: all of that is ground our engineers cover, and none of that asks the vehicle to come to us.

Kerbside call-outs around Eastbrook

Some drivers have no suitable spot to pull in whatsoever. Hazards flashing in a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge beside Celtic Green as you realised after setting off — we take that call regularly enough that it is the normal kind.

Safe there? Wait with it. Not okay? Step out and clear of it. Never fire it up to get to a better place. It will go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging drags that mix deeper into your fuel system. We'll bring our van to a difficult location without any fuss, and for your car that is much better than carrying on.

Already run it? Petrol in a diesel over a few miles

The local M4 is the road that matters here, and it lies under 10 miles from Eastbrook. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will usually manage both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is rarely a clean stop. Power falls away, your idle goes uneven, and there may be smoke.

Get off at the first sensible junction, turn off, and don't start it to reposition. It affects what we bring, so tell us when you ring: on a longer run — anything close to the under 5 miles to the nearest city — assume the petrol has been through the fuel filter, your pump and your injectors.

Eastbrook itself

Eastbrook is a suburban area in The Vale of Glamorgan, situated near the coast and approximately 3.4 miles from Cardiff. Eastbrook has a relatively low elevation of 17 metres and is characterized by its semi-detached housing stock. Eastbrook is part of the wider Cardiff urban area, with the city's amenities and services within easy reach. Eastbrook is also close to other nearby places, including Murch, Dinas Powis, and Westra.

Our visit in Eastbrook, step by step

  • The responses shape the work, which is why our technicians ask before pricing: what got in, how much of that, and if the engine has run.
  • The contaminated mixture is pulled out of your tank.
  • We rinse the fuel lines and clear the fuel filter, and so what is remaining in the system isn't what started the problem.
  • The system gets primed, on clean diesel.
  • Your engine is started and tested to be sure it runs correctly on clean diesel.

From that point, you're ready to pull away. Our technicians do all of it wherever the vehicle has come to a stop, which means it never needs to go to a garage, and when it has been spotted quickly, it is very uncommon for there to be lasting damage.

AdBlue in your diesel tank instead, around Eastbrook?

If what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the opening step is unchanged — don't start the vehicle — but this issue isn't. Petrol thins your diesel and removes the lubrication the fuel system relies on. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to corrosion and deposits instead.

AdBlue removal in Eastbrook has a page of its own with the detail on it, including why it is usually the more significant of the two. Our engineers cover both.

Eastbrook costs for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

What moves the figure is listed below, as the job is not one job and we can't honestly put a single number on this page.

  • This is the big one: whether your engine has been run, or driven.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
  • AdBlue or petrol, whichever was put in.
  • Where your vehicle is, and whether a van can sensibly get to and work on it.

Tell us the car, the quantity and if it has run, and you'll get a firm answer instead of a range. Not pressing, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

Petrol in diesel: common questions around Eastbrook

At a petrol station in Eastbrook, can you do a fuel drain there?

Yes — forecourts are where a big share of this takes place. Often, provided the site agrees: Tesco, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether we can work in that location is something our engineers answer on the spot.

Is there a safe quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Ratio decides it rather than litres — and more than either, whether the engine has run. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct scenarios, of course. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is if the system has had that mixture pulled through it.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. What next?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then turn off and leave it off. It's fixable a lot more frequently than motorists assume, even though driving is what takes the problem from that tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A drain then flush carried out correctly isn't a modification and does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. What's likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for your engine to remain off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

Two-stroke oil solves a distinct fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No. The tank still has petrol in it after that, and the pump still has to live with it.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Not at all. Our technicians drain and clean your car wherever it is, so there's no need to bring it to a main dealer.

Still with your vehicle?

Leave the car switched off.

If you have already driven the vehicle, pull in somewhere safe, turn it off then leave it off. Cold, parked, going nowhere: that is the best position to be in. Motorists fear this much more than they need to.
