Petrol in a Diesel Car in Eastfield: How Worried Should You Be?

Likely less than you are now — as long as no one has started it. Petrol resting in a diesel tank does nothing to the motor till something pulls it through your fuel system — the ignition priming the pump, the starter, or the drive on its own. So the honest answer to the first question everyone around Eastfield asks, "have I ruined it?", is generally no. To leave the car like that, phone Petrol in Diesel then leave the engine alone. What petrol really does to a diesel, how to gauge how far it's gone, and how to stop it from happening a second time: that's the remainder of this page.

The motor and petrol in a diesel: what goes on

Diesel has two tasks on its way through a motor. It burns, and before it combusts it protects. What stops the surfaces inside the high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel injectors from grinding against one another is the diesel passing through them — they are made to extremely fine gaps.

Petrol handles the first task poorly and the second not at all. The clattering comes from petrol being designed not to ignite when compressed, which is exactly the reverse of what a diesel needs. On top of that it is runnier than diesel, it strips away the protection your system depends on, and any pump working on such a blend is wearing itself.

Seen together, they make clear the shape the issue has. Not contact but movement is what causes the damage. All a tank with petrol in it amounts to is a fuel problem. Whatever a worn pump sheds travels on, carried by the fuel, into the fuel injectors further along, which is why a pump that has been working on the petrol is where a mechanical fault begins.

How bad is petrol in a diesel? Four situations our technicians see in Eastfield

Filled but not once started — as good as it gets. Being on a forecourt is what makes this the case: elsewhere, the car has been driven there to begin with. With that petrol held inside the tank alone, it's emptied and rinsed right where it stands, and nothing more is needed.

Started for a second, or only the ignition on. Once primed, the system has drawn petrol out of the tank up to the fuel filter and your lines. Still generally simple: drain, flush, and your filter dealt with.

Those few miles on the road meant the pump running on fuel weakened by petrol the whole way. How hard the vehicle was driven counts as much as how far, and the work takes in the tank, the lines, the fuel filter and fresh fuel through the whole system. On the school run to Braeburn Primary and Nursery Academy, the mileage is small. Any distance on the Petuaria Way, under 50 miles from Eastfield, means the engine working hard throughout, and a run to York, under 50 miles away, makes a very different job as well.

Knocking, an uneven idle, smoke, a throttle gone soft: driven until it complained. What you are hearing is your engine signalling fuel that no longer runs like diesel. Stop on the spot — on the verge on Holme Hill, at the kerb, down a side road — and do not move it. Permanent damage is very rare when a car is stopped quickly, and the fuel drain and flush-through that still come first take care of it.

Diesel fuel system after petrol in the tank, Eastfield

Eastfield people and the petrol in a diesel myths they hear

Myth: topping up to full with diesel makes it fine. It does not. Nothing is removed when you top up — the tank simply carries more of the same blend. That advice presumes a diesel fuel system handles petrol by percentage. It does not.

Myth: "A newer diesel can cope with a bit of petrol." If anything, the opposite. Smaller parts and higher pressure are how a newer diesel runs its fuel, and that makes the protection matter more, not less.

"It starts, it drives, so there is no harm" — the myth that trips up most motorists than any other. The driver of a petrol motor fed diesel usually has no choice but to stop, since it will not run, and the harm stops with them. Feed petrol to a diesel and it usually fires up, ticks over and pulls away like nothing happened — all the while its pump is wearing. Running isn't the same as fine.

"A drop of two-stroke oil and drive it home" — a myth, taken from a fix from years ago, for a distinct fault. None of what petrol weakened is put back by it — and later, that tank still holds the petrol.

Myth: "Drain the tank yourself and you're sorted." After your engine has run, some of the petrol is no longer inside the tank: it is in the fuel filter and the fuel lines, and it goes straight back through the pump at your next start. Clearing petrol into a can at the roadside is also really dangerous.

How does petrol in a diesel occur?

No one does it on purpose, and it's seldom carelessness. The petrol nozzle is the slimmer of the two and slides into a diesel filler with almost no resistance; a diesel nozzle mostly won't go into a petrol motor at all. The forecourt makes it easy, and the mistake runs one way.

The moment routine stops matching your car is the moment it takes place. Hire cars, courtesy cars, and cars that are new to you. Two motors on one drive, one petrol, one diesel. Your normal forecourt, its pumps suddenly in a different order. A hurried fill en route to Seamer with a train to catch. Years of petrol cars behind you, a diesel Volkswagen Golf in front of you on the forecourt for its first tank — that is when. The hand does what it has always done when you add rain, a phone call or a back seat full of children.

Preventing petrol in a diesel next time you fill up around Eastfield

  • The label is what counts, and so check the petrol pump rather than the colour: in the UK unleaded handles are usually green and diesel black, yet not on every forecourt.
  • In a car you don't know, look inside the flap over the filler or at the cap before your first fill: many vehicles print the fuel there.
  • One of each in the home? Label your key to the diesel — a coloured fob, a sticker — since intending to remember isn't enough.
  • It seems daft and it does the trick: on your first fill in a new or hired car, say "diesel" out loud before you lift the nozzle off the petrol pump.
  • Mistakes like this are simple to make whilst your mind is on something else, and so your phone goes away.
  • Some diesels come with a filler designed to block a petrol nozzle, and devices you can add exist for vehicles without one. Such an inhibitor helps up to a point — as a safety net, not a reason to stop checking the pump.
  • Spotting it mid-fill? Stop there and then. A weaker blend follows from less petrol in your tank, but your next step stays the same: do not fire it up.

Already put petrol in a diesel in Eastfield?

Then the order of things is brief. Don't switch your ignition on, and do not start it. Yet on the forecourt, at Morrisons or anywhere else? Ask the staff to help you roll the car away from the pump. What got in, roughly how much, and whether it's run: tell us that when you ring 0333 366 0103.

If it was AdBlue rather than petrol, say so. That's a separate issue — corrosion and deposits rather than lost lubrication — and it has its own page for Eastfield.

Why one petrol in a diesel job around Eastfield costs more than another

The four scenarios above are four separate jobs, so no single price for this would be fair. Which of them you're in is chiefly what moves the cost. Two things come after that: the petrol that was put in as a proportion of what that tank takes, then the spot your car is in and whether our van can reach it safely.

Before any quote, not after, we ask three questions: the fuel that was put in, the amount, and if it has run. That's why. Those replies are what change a range into one firm number.
