Eastoke: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?
With that tank still carrying the petrol and your engine not yet turned over, nearly every job requires only a drain, so leave your engine off. That outcome is determined in the minutes right after filling up, and not by the amount that was put in. Throughout Eastoke and the rest of Hampshire, Petrol in Diesel drains your car and flushes it where it sits, whether at a roadside, on a drive or at a forecourt. A single ring our way is sufficient: our technicians shall explain what follows from here. Make that right away.
The first five steps: petrol in a diesel
- Do not start the car — and don't trust it if it starts. This is the part most people have wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol engine given diesel normally just will not run, so the person stops and the damage halts with them. A diesel given petrol usually starts, ticks over and pulls away quite happily for a couple of miles. It is not okay. It's wearing that fuel system whenever you drive.
- Turning your ignition on commonly primes your system, and priming is what carries petrol out of that tank then into the pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps protected on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol handles the burning and none of the oiling. Leave your ignition be.
- Do not thin it. Diesel poured on top clears nothing, and so all you have is more of what was already there, since percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The type makes no difference.
- Remain where you are if you safely can. A motor that has never shifted is the quickest one to handle, and we'd sooner get to a tricky spot than have it started. If you are pulled up on the verge on Rails Lane, turn those hazards on and leave the car there.
- Check where you are before ringing. A postcode starting PO11 9, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise the van circles instead of showing up.
- What went in, about how much, and if the motor has run — these three answers shape your whole visit. Dial 0333 366 0103 and tell us.
Forecourt draining for petrol in a diesel
Much of this work starts at a forecourt, meaning a large part of it is finished there. If you're still at the forecourt at JET, that's normally where this drain takes place — our technicians work on petrol station forecourts routinely, with the owner's consent.
At a forecourt, it gets halted with your engine never run, and no place else does it. Everywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — your car was started and moved to get there, which means fuel was pulled from that tank, through the filter and into the high-pressure pump. That's not a calamity, and our engineers can still put it right where it is. It does mean your lines and your filter need cleaning as well as the tank, and that's settled by the few seconds between seeing the till receipt and going for the key.
Out from the pump, the next motorist can get through — so yes, let the staff help you roll the vehicle. Very much worth doing. Four car lengths isn't worth a restart.
If you've put petrol in the diesel Peugeot 308 in Eastoke and you're now stranded at Co-op Food with a boot full of shopping, phone us. Do not crank it again to leave the space. We will get to you, empty the tank, flush your fuel lines and put clean diesel in so you can get home. A mile or so at light throttle uses very little diesel, so such jobs are often the simple cases.
Your diesel Ford Focus will have seemed perfectly usual on the way back from Mengham Junior School. They do, and that's the snag with petrol in a diesel and not the other way round. Put diesel in a petrol vehicle and it usually won't run, so the driver stops and the damage stops with them. Put petrol in a diesel and it fires up, idles and moves off as though nothing has happened — all the while the high-pressure pump keeps working without the protection your fuel is meant to be supplying. Nothing warns you, as from the driver's seat there is nothing to alert you about. Phone us with approximately how far you drove and how hard you pushed it; the second answer counts more than the first.
It will fire up. It will move off quite happily. That's the problem, because a diesel on a thinned tank behaves usually while wearing down the parts its fuel should be lubricating. So no, never try the journey home from The Lifeboat Inn — leave the Mercedes E-Class then ring us.
Never drive it home to buy yourself time. You already have it: nothing gets worse whilst your car stands, because a diesel Audi A3 left at Tourner Bury Plantations is doing none of what it did on the way there. The pump has stopped turning.
Leave the BMW 5 Series close to St Andrew's Church and phone us. We are direct about not driving on as a worn pump sheds, and what it sheds passes downstream with your fuel to the injectors beyond it.
Do our engineers serve your corner of Eastoke?
The same trips carry us to Mengham, Selsmore, Sea View, South Hayling and Gable Head along with Eastoke, which is a residential suburb.
If yours is not on the list that does not mean we do not come — there are separate pages for nearly all locations around Hampshire, and the ones listed above are merely the immediate neighbours. Assuming is the thing to avoid, especially on the boundary or somewhere your satnav gets lost. Call us to enquire.
The ground this page spans appears on this map. All of that is territory our technicians work: a roadside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You do not bring the vehicle anywhere.
Stranded by the kerbside near Eastoke
Not everyone gets the opportunity to pull over anywhere safe. If you worked it out after setting off and finished up by the verge beside Sea Front, or at a lay-by somewhere with your hazards flashing, that's a normal call for us and not an unusual one.
Okay where you are? Wait beside it. Not okay? Get out and away from it. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags that blend further into the system — and oblige it often will, which is why the engine does not get restarted to limp somewhere better. However inconvenient the spot, it is no bother for us to come to it, and that's far better for your car than pressing on.
Already run it? Petrol in a diesel after some miles
This is where the local Waterlooville Bypass counts, under 5 miles from Eastoke. A misfilled diesel will often take you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong, and the symptoms when they appear are typically a loss of power, a rough idle and some smoke instead of a clean stop.
Do not start it to move it. Get off at the first safe exit then switch off. It changes what our technicians bring, and so say so when you call: on a longer trip — anything near the under 10 miles to the nearest city — assume the petrol has been through the filter, the pump and the injectors.
Where's Eastoke?
Eastoke is a coastal suburban area in Hampshire, situated near the city of Portsmouth and overlooking the Solent Strait. Eastoke sits at a low elevation of around 5 metres, with its detached housing stock reflecting the area's residential character. Eastoke is close to nearby places such as Mengham and Selsmore, and is part of the larger Portsmouth urban area. Eastoke has a population of approximately 2758 residents.
Once our engineers get to you in Eastoke: what we do
- Three things get asked before any quote — your fuel that was put in, the quantity, and if anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.
- We empty your tank of the polluted mixture.
- What is left in the system should not be what created the trouble, and so the lines get rinsed and the fuel filter cleared.
- The system gets bled, on new diesel.
- The engine is started and checked to confirm it runs correctly on fresh diesel.
That has it ready to drive away. There's no need to go to a garage at any point, because the work is all done where the car is, and when it is caught quickly, lasting damage is very uncommon.
Eastoke AdBlue removal is a separate matter
The problem isn't the same, though the first rule is — do not start it — if what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol. Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and strips out the protection the fuel system relies on. Corrosion and deposits are what a diesel tank gets instead, since AdBlue is urea in water.
Both are ours. There's a separate Eastoke page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.
How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain in Eastoke?
One price would not be honest here, since this is not one job. These are the things that shift it:
- Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
- The sort of liquid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
- Where the car is, and if a technician can sensibly reach and work on it.
The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back clear instead of as a range. For your car at home that's going nowhere and is not pressing, is fine too.
Questions we hear about petrol in diesel around Eastoke
Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Eastoke?
Plenty of what our engineers do takes place nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you are at when you call and we will tell you if our technicians can work there. With the station's agreement our engineers attend Esso and the other forecourts nearby regularly.
How much petrol is too much for a diesel?
It depends on the ratio instead of the litres, and a lot more on whether your motor has run. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different situations, of course. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is whether your fuel system has had that mix drawn through it.
I put petrol in my diesel and drove the vehicle. Now what?
Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. It's recoverable much more commonly than motorists fear, even though driving is what takes the trouble from your tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart it.
Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?
A drain and flush carried out correctly is not an alteration and doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one, which is another reason to leave the vehicle turned off.
Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home
What petrol has weakened isn't put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a different fault. So no. Your tank still has petrol in it after that, and the pump still has to live with it.
Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?
You don't need one. Your car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to take it to a franchised dealer.
Still with your car?
Keep the engine shut off.
Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, turn off, and no restarting the car after that. This is recoverable from far more commonly than drivers fear, and a stationary, cold vehicle is the best position to be in.
