Petrol in Diesel

Eastwood: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Do not turn on the engine. If the petrol is still inside that tank and the motor has not yet turned over, a fuel drain is nearly always all it takes — and that gets settled in the next few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled vehicles where they are, all over Eastwood and the remainder of Nottinghamshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway. Contact us before everything else begins, so you will learn what follows after that.

Your next five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • Give a petrol motor diesel and it will usually refuse to run at all, and so the motorist stops there and so does the wear. Feed a diesel petrol and the car starts, it idles, it drives off — all right for several miles. People have that backwards, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So don't fire it up. And if started, do not trust it: the fuel system is wearing whenever you drive.
  • Diesel combusts, and before it combusts it protects — your high-pressure pump, its injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave the car's ignition be as well: flicking it on is usually all it takes to prime your system, and priming moves petrol from your tank into just those components.
  • Topping up clears nothing. It gives you a larger tank of the same mix, because a diesel fuel system does not cope with petrol by percentage in the way that guidance assumes — so don't pour diesel on top to thin it. Octane is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • Wait where you are if you safely can. A vehicle that has not shifted is the easiest one to handle, and we would rather drive to a tricky place than have it started. If you are parked on the verge on King Street, turn the hazards on and leave the car there.
  • Before you dial, have your position. Anything next to you with a label on it, plus a postcode that starts NG16 3 — that is what settles whether the van turns up or circles.
  • Phone 0333 366 0103. Let us know what went in, approximately how much, plus whether the car has fired. Those three details determine the whole visit.

Pump-side draining for petrol in a diesel

A large part of this work gets done at the pump, since that's where it often starts. Still at Morrisons? Then that is usually where it happens. Garage forecourts are everyday for us, with the consent of the owner.

Nowhere else other than the forecourt can this be caught with the engine still unrun. The few seconds between seeing your receipt and reaching for your key decide how much requires cleaning. Everywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — your car was switched on and moved to get there, so fuel was pulled from that tank, through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means the fuel lines and the fuel filter need rinsing as well as the tank. It's not a disaster, and our technicians can still deal with it where the vehicle stands.

Move the car out of the way if the staff suggest it, and they normally will. The next driver gets through the petrol pump, and that is worth doing. Four car lengths is not worth a start.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Eastwood

Parts our team reach near Eastwood

Eastwood is a riverside town, so our vans are out to it and to the villages by it on those same trips: Eastwood Hall, Hill Top, Bailey Grove, Lower Beauvale and New Eastwood.

If yours isn't on this list it does not mean we do not come — there are pages for nearly all locations around Nottinghamshire, and the ones named above are merely the immediate neighbours. Contact us to enquire instead of guessing — county lines particularly, and anywhere your phone tends to get wrong.

Check this map for the patch shown on this page. Kerbside, forecourt, private drive, car park: all of that is territory our engineers work on, and none of that asks the car to come to us.

Stranded at the roadside in Eastwood

A chance to pull over somewhere sensible doesn't fall to everyone. A common call for us and not a rare one: realised after setting off, ended up along the verge on Oxford Street or in a lay-by with the hazards on.

Whether you stay by the car or move away from it hangs on if being there feels safe. Do not start up the motor to nurse the vehicle somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling that blend further into your fuel system. We will take the van to a tricky spot without any bother, and for the car that is far better than pressing on.

It will start. It will move off quite happily. That is the problem, as a diesel on a diluted tank runs typically whilst grinding the components its fuel should be lubricating. So no, do not risk the drive home from Wellington Inn — leave the Ford Focus and phone.

None of it is the engine failing. That's the part worth hearing, and it is why the usual Coronation Park call ends better than it sounds: a diesel Mercedes C-Class drives out there without complaint, comes back with the power gone, your idle lumpy and possibly a little smoke, and the cause is your fuel no longer behaving like diesel. Diesel has to be heavy enough to seal the precision parts it passes through; petrol dilutes it; and a diesel injection system is hydraulic as much as chemical, needing the fuel to hold pressure instead of only to burn. So pressure that should build and stay built leaks past gaps, delivery arrives poorer and later and less even than designed, and all of that stops once the fuel is corrected.

Leave the Dacia Duster near Eastwood Town Council then ring us. We are firm about not driving on since a worn pump sheds, and what it sheds moves onward with the fuel to the injectors downstream.

Hire car or company car? Ring them before you phone us — some contracts want the hire firm to authorise the work, and sorting that out first is a great deal faster than sorting it after that. Then ring us about the Audi Q5 near Eastwood Library, and don't worry that you can't say how full that tank was. Almost nobody can, in a vehicle they picked up two days ago, and we work it out on the spot. The reason we ask is that petrol in a diesel does its harm as a share: the same few litres in a nearly empty tank is a far stronger mixture than in a full one. Petrol is rated on how well it resists igniting under pressure, which is the opposite of what a diesel needs — so the stronger the blend, the more it knocks, smokes and goes flat.

That softness is your fuel failing to build pressure fully, not the motor packing up — and with no warning light for it, vehicles in that position generally get driven once more before somebody phones. Do not. A couple of streets is all it got: throttle gone dead, idle turned ragged, and a diesel Vauxhall Insignia now resting by Boyes. Turn the car off and ring us.

Petrol in a diesel, but the car has moved

Your M1 is the one that counts now, and runs under 3 miles from Eastwood. It will often get you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it is smoke, an uneven idle and power draining away — not a neat stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.

The next safe junction is the one to take. Switch off there, then leave the restarting alone. Presume the worst of it on a long run. Anything close to the under 10 miles to the closest city, and the mixture has been through the filter, through the pump, through your injectors. Tell us when you call. What we bring differs.

Where is Eastwood?

Eastwood is a town situated on the banks of the River Erewash in Nottinghamshire, with Eastwood being close to the city of Nottingham. Eastwood sits at an elevation of around 103 metres, and Eastwood is characterised by its predominantly detached housing stock. Eastwood is located near several notable places, including Eastwood Hall and Hill Top, and Eastwood is a short distance from Bailey Grove.

The call-out in Eastwood, step by step

  • The replies change the work, which is why we ask before pricing: what was put in, how much of it, and whether your engine has run.
  • The tainted fuel is drawn out of the tank.
  • Fuel lines are cleaned through and the fuel filter cleared, leaving nothing in your system that started any of this.
  • Your system gets primed, on new diesel.
  • It is started with fresh diesel in it, and our technicians make sure that it is running correctly.

From that point, you are ready to set off. All of this is done where the car is, so it never needs to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been spotted quickly, long-term damage is very unusual.

Eastwood AdBlue removal is a separate job

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening step is unchanged — the motor stays off — while this issue under it's a different one altogether. Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and strips out the protection the system depends on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus deposits.

Both are ours. There is a separate Eastwood page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost around Eastwood

Truthfully, no single price fits on a page like this. This job differs. Here's what moves it:

  • Whether the motor has been started or driven. This is the big one.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, set against how much the tank takes.
  • Whether it's petrol or AdBlue.
  • Access: the car's position, and whether working on it there is sensible for a van.

Tell us the vehicle, the quantity and if it has run, and you'll get a straight answer instead of a range. Not time-critical, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then works.

Things our engineers get about petrol in diesel around Eastwood

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Eastwood?

Plenty of what our engineers do happens nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you're at when you call and we'll tell you if our engineers can work there. With the site's agreement our engineers work at Esso and the other forecourts around town routinely.

A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Litres aren't the yardstick. Ratio is, and far more than either, it counts if anything has been run. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is required is whether that mix has been pulled through the system.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Pull in somewhere safe, turn off, and keep it off. Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does shift the trouble out of the tank then into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays recoverable a lot more commonly than people fear.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain and flush done to a proper standard, which is no modification at all. A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a different fault and it does not replace what petrol has weakened. Your pump still has to live with it, since the tank still has petrol in it later on.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

You don't need one. Your car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.

Is the vehicle still with you?

Keep it shut off.

If you have already driven the car, stop somewhere sensible, turn it off then keep it off. Cold, parked, going nowhere: that is the best position to be in. Motorists fear this a lot more than they need to.
