Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Ebchester? Don't Start It

If you have not started the motor yet, don't. A fuel drain and nothing more is nearly always what a car needs while the fuel is still sitting in that tank and the engine has not yet run, which is why it's the next few minutes that matter, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel comes to the car wherever it has stopped in Ebchester or the remainder of Durham, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, and drains and cleans it there. A single ring to us will be plenty: we will explain what follows after this. Try it right away.

Petrol in a diesel: what to try now

  • Do not crank it. Turned on all the same? Then don't depend on it. Diesel in a petrol motor generally will not run, so the motorist stops and the damage ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It pulls away fine, for a couple of miles. People get that backwards. It isn't okay — your fuel system is wearing every mile you do.
  • Two jobs, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps your high-pressure fuel pump and injectors protected. Petrol only handles the one. That is why the ignition remains off too — flick it on and you usually prime your system, and that's petrol leaving that tank for precisely those parts.
  • Never dilute it. Diesel added on top clears nothing, so all you have is more of what was already there, since percentage is not how a diesel fuel system accepts petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The octane makes no difference.
  • We'd much rather travel to a tricky spot than have it started — so if you safely can, stay put. Nothing is easier to sort than a motor that has not shifted. On the verge on Front Street, that means hazards on then keep the vehicle.
  • Check where you are before phoning. A postcode that starts DH8 0, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise the technician circles instead of turning up.
  • What got in, about how much, and if the motor has fired — those three facts determine the entire job. Phone 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

Quarter past eight. A rushed fill on the way in. At about eleven it dawns on you, and by then your diesel Volkswagen Golf has sat outside Stocksfield for three hours. Phone and keep the car where it sits. What is key is the drive in, because diesel both ignites and — before that — protects your pump and the injectors, while petrol only ever ignites. Those few miles worked the pump on a fluid robbed of a great deal of its protection, and no volume of standing in a car park gives any of that back. Hence the thing we ask about mileage instead of hours standing, and hence the advice to leave the keys alone till our engineers get there.

Hazards on. Ignition off. Call us. It's twenty to nine by Ebchester CofE Primary School, you're late, and your receipt reads unleaded — and even though three miles in the Peugeot 308 seems like nothing, fuel gets supplied to demand, and a rushed run asks for plenty of it.

Your pump is not turning, so whatever your diesel Ford Focus did on the way to Hill Bank Wood, none of that is happening now. Nothing gets worse whilst it stands. Take your time over this — but never drive the car home to buy any.

Hire car or company car? Call them before you call us — some agreements want the hire firm to authorise the work, and sorting that out first is a great deal quicker than sorting it after that. Then phone us about the Dacia Duster by Ebchester Community Centre, and don't worry that you cannot say how full that tank was. Nearly nobody can, in a motor they collected two days ago, and we work it out there. The reason our technicians ask is that petrol in a diesel does its harm as a ratio: the same few litres in a nearly empty tank is a far stronger mixture than in a full one. Petrol is rated on how well it withstands igniting under pressure, which is the opposite of what a diesel needs — so the stronger that blend, the more it knocks, smokes and goes flat.

A couple of streets, then it stopped. Throttle dead, idle lumpy, and the diesel BMW 5 Series is parked up near Vindomora. The engine isn't packing up — that sluggishness is fuel that won't build pressure. There's no light on the dash for it, and so vehicles like yours generally get driven again before anybody picks up the phone. Don't. Off, then phone us.

At a forecourt: removing petrol from your diesel

Pumps are where this work mostly kicks off, and where a large share of that finishes. Still at Esso? Then that is generally where it takes place. Petrol station forecourts are everyday for us, with the permission of the owner.

Before the engine has started — a forecourt is the one spot this ends up caught. The few seconds between checking your receipt and going for the key settle how much needs flushing. Anywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — your car was switched on and driven to get there, so fuel was pulled from that tank, through your filter then into the high-pressure pump. That means the lines and the fuel filter need flushing as well as your tank. It's not a disaster, and our engineers can still sort it out where the car sits.

Staff will generally chip in pushing it clear of the petrol pump, which lets the next motorist get by. Accept the offer. Firing the car to shift four vehicle lengths isn't.

Ebchester plus the towns beside it

As a village, Ebchester sees a regular call, whilst the villages close by go along on the same journey: Broom Hill and Newlands, East Law and High Westwood, Low Westwood.

Our technicians do come. The names above are merely the nearest neighbours, and a page is there for the majority of towns around Durham, and so an absence from the list is not an absence from our coverage. Phone to enquire instead of assuming — boundaries especially, and anywhere your satnav can misread.

This map is the patch this page covers. All of it is ground our technicians cover: a kerbside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You never bring the car anywhere.

Stranded by the roadside around Ebchester

Not everybody has a suitable place to pull in. Hazards on in a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge on Vindomora Road because you noticed after setting off — our engineers take that call so often that it's the ordinary kind.

Whether you sit beside the vehicle or keep away from it depends on whether staying nearby feels safe. It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that is the trouble: start it up to get to somewhere safer and the mix goes further into the fuel system with every mile driven. However awkward the spot, it's no problem for us to get to it, and that is a lot better for the car than driving on.

Driven it already? Pull in, then see below

This is where your Central Motorway East comes into it — under 15 miles away from Ebchester. A wrongly fuelled diesel will usually take you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong, and the signs when they come are usually lost power, an uneven idle and some smoke rather than a neat stop.

Don't start it to reposition. Get off at the first safe junction then turn off. Long run? Anything near the under 15 miles to the nearest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that arrived at by the contamination. Say that on the call, because it affects what goes in the van.

All about Ebchester

Ebchester is a village situated on the banks of the River Derwent in County Durham, with a mix of semi-detached housing and other residential properties. Ebchester sits at an elevation of around 98 metres, near the villages of Broom Hill and Newlands. Ebchester is located approximately 10.8 miles from Newcastle upon Tyne, making it a commuter base for the city. Ebchester has a population of around 853 people, living in a range of housing types, predominantly semi-detached homes.

What happens when we get to you in Ebchester

  • Three things get checked before any quote — your fuel that was put in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.
  • The contaminated mixture is drawn from your tank.
  • Fuel lines are rinsed through and your filter cleared, leaving nothing in your system that started any of this.
  • Priming follows, once clean diesel is in.
  • The engine is started and tested to confirm it runs correctly on clean diesel.

Your car is then ready for you to drive away. Our technicians do all of it wherever your car has ended up, which means it never needs to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been noticed early, it is very rare for there to be permanent damage.

Ebchester AdBlue removal is a distinct matter

The issue isn't the same, though the opening rule is — never start it — if what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and removes the lubrication the system depends on. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings corrosion and build-up.

AdBlue removal in Ebchester has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it's often the more serious of the two. We handle both.

Ebchester pricing for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

We cannot put one figure on this page honestly, as this job is not one job. What moves it:

  • This is the big one: whether your engine has been run, or driven.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what your tank takes — that ratio.
  • Whether it's petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where your car is, and whether a technician can sensibly get to and work on it.

Tell us what your car is, how much got in, and if your engine has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range. Not urgent, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

Ebchester motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Ebchester?

A large portion of this work happens there, so yes. Tell us which one you are at when you call and we'll tell you if our engineers can work there. With the station's consent we visit Tesco and the other forecourts around town routinely.

Is there a sensible amount of petrol in a diesel?

Proportion settles it rather than litres — and more than either, whether your motor has run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is required is if that blend has been pulled through the system.

I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. Driving takes the issue along — out of the tank, into your pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really helpful thing left to you is not restarting the car.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

No. Carried out properly, clearing and rinsing is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one, which is another reason to leave the vehicle switched off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a distinct issue and it doesn't put back what petrol has diluted. Petrol remains in that tank after that, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no respite from it.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

There is no need to bring it to a franchised dealer, since our engineers drain and flush your car wherever it is.

Standing next to it?

Keep the engine shut off.

If you have already driven it, pull in somewhere sensible, turn it off and leave it off. A still, cold car is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from much more often than people fear.
