Edgehill: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?
Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled cars where they stand, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, throughout Edgehill and the remainder of North Yorkshire. The very first thing to do is not to start the engine. When the motor has not been started and the petrol is still in the tank, a drain is almost always all it takes, and the next few minutes determine that, not how much got in. We will tell you what the next step is. Call us — it happens ahead of everything else.
Petrol in a diesel: what to do now
- Don't crank it. Fired up regardless? Then don't believe it. Diesel in a petrol car generally will not run, and so the driver stops and the harm ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It drives off happily, for a couple of miles. Motorists get that reversed. It isn't fine — that fuel system is wearing every mile you do.
- Diesel burns, and before it burns it greases — your injection pump, the injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave your ignition off as well: flicking it on is commonly all it takes to prime your system, and priming draws petrol from your tank into precisely those components.
- Don't tip diesel on top to thin it. A diesel fuel system does not handle petrol by percentage in the way that advice implies, and topping up clears nothing — it merely gives you a bigger tank of the same mix. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.
- Wait where you are if you reasonably can. A car that has not shifted is the simplest one to sort out, and our team would much rather get to an awkward spot than have it started. If you are stopped on the verge on Hinderwell Road, turn those hazards on then keep the car there.
- Know where you are before ringing. A postcode that starts YO12 4, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the technician circles instead of turning up.
- Ring 0333 366 0103. Expect three questions — what was put in, roughly how much, plus whether the motor has been started. Your responses settle whatever follows.
At the forecourt: clearing petrol from your diesel
Much of the work starts at a pump, so a fair chunk of it gets completed at one. If you are still on the forecourt at BP, that's usually where the drain takes place — we operate on petrol station forecourts regularly, with the owner's consent.
Nowhere else except a garage can the mistake be spotted with your engine still unrun. We can still sort it out where it is, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, the car has been switched on and moved there, and that pulled fuel through the fuel filter then into your high-pressure pump, right from that tank. None of that is a catastrophe, but the flush then has to reach past that tank to the fuel lines and the fuel filter, and the few seconds between seeing the receipt and going for the key are what determine that.
The attendants will generally help you wheel it clear of the pump so the next driver can get past. It is worth doing. Starting the car over four vehicle lengths? Don't.
How much fuel the pump has drawn is what we are truly asking — not how long ago any of that was. So the call our technicians like sounds like this: diesel Volkswagen Passat, a couple of litres of unleaded, a couple of miles done, now switched off outside Budgens.
Hazards on. Ignition off. Phone. It's twenty to nine outside Thomas Hinderwell Primary Academy, you are late, and the till receipt reads unleaded — and though three miles in the Skoda Octavia feels like nothing, fuel gets metered to demand, and a rushed dash needs plenty of it.
Why we're blunt about not driving on: your pump rests upstream of the injectors, so whatever a worn pump gives off travels on with the fuel. Leave the Audi A3 by Falsgrave Community Resource Centre then phone us.
Hire car or company car? Ring them before you call us — some contracts want the hire firm to approve the work, and sorting that out first is a great deal quicker than sorting it after that. Then phone us about the BMW 5 Series close to Oliver's Mount Racing Circuit, and don't worry that you can't say how full the tank was. Nearly nobody can, in a motor they collected two days ago, and our engineers work it out on the spot. The reason our technicians ask is that petrol in a diesel does its harm as a ratio: the same few litres in an almost empty tank is a far stronger mixture than in a full one. Petrol is rated on how well it resists igniting under pressure, which is the opposite of what a diesel needs — so the stronger that blend, the more it knocks, smokes and goes flat.
By this point your tank isn't where most of the problem is. Once a diesel has run, that mixture is in your filter, the fuel lines, the pump and its rail — and it does not come back out with your tank contents. A diesel Ford Kuga that made it by Oliver's Mount needs your system purged, not drained.
Edgehill plus the places beside it
The same journeys bring us to Falsgrave, Weaponness, Sandybed, South Cliff and Wheatcroft as well as Edgehill, which is a residential suburb.
Not on that list? It says nothing. The places above are just the closest few, and nearly all towns in North Yorkshire have a page of their own elsewhere on this site. Call us to ask rather than guessing, particularly where you are on a boundary or somewhere a satnav can't find.
The ground the page spans sits on this map. Your vehicle does not need to travel to us. We work throughout all of it — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.
Stopped on the kerbside anywhere around Edgehill?
Not everybody finds a suitable spot to pull in. Set off, then twigged? Landed along the verge beside Hinderwell Place, or stuck in some lay-by with the hazards flashing? That's a normal call here. Not an odd one.
Clear of the vehicle while it's not sensible to sit there, with it when it is. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags the blend further into the fuel system — and oblige it often will, which is why the motor doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere better. However inconvenient the spot, it is no bother for us to get to it, and that's far better for your car than pressing on.
Petrol in a diesel, but the car has gone
Your Petuaria Way is the road that matters here, and it lies under 50 miles from Edgehill. A misfuelled diesel will usually take you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong, and the symptoms when they appear are usually a drop in power, a lumpy idle and smoke rather than a tidy stop.
Do not restart it to move it. Get off at the first safe exit and turn off. Assume the worst of that on a long run. Anything approaching the under 50 miles to the nearest city, and the contamination has been through the fuel filter, through the pump, through the fuel injectors. Say so when you phone. What our engineers bring changes.
A little about Edgehill
Edgehill is a small suburban area in North Yorkshire, situated near the coast at an elevation of around 45 metres. Edgehill lies within a larger urban landscape that includes nearby Falsgrave, Weaponness, and Sandybed. Edgehill is characterized by its predominantly terraced housing stock, reflecting the area's development as a residential community. Edgehill is located approximately 34 miles from the city of York and around 190 miles from London.
When our engineers arrive with you around Edgehill: what happens
- Our technicians establish what went in, how much, and whether your motor has run. The replies shape the work, which is why our engineers ask before pricing.
- We empty that tank of the polluted fuel.
- Fuel lines are flushed through and the filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the fuel system that started any of this.
- New diesel goes in, and then the system gets primed.
- We start the engine and confirm it runs correctly on clean diesel.
From there, you're ready to set off. Everything is done where your car is, so it never has to be taken to a garage, and when it has been caught quickly, long-term damage is very rare.
Edgehill AdBlue removal is a different job
If what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the opening rule is unchanged — don't start the vehicle — but this problem isn't. The protection a fuel system depends on gets stripped away by petrol, which dilutes the diesel. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to rust and build-up.
Our technicians deal with both, and AdBlue removal around Edgehill has its own page with the full story — including why it is often the more significant of the two.
How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Edgehill?
What shifts the price is listed below, since this job isn't one job and we cannot frankly put a single figure on this page.
- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
- Wrong fuel in, against what the tank holds — that ratio.
- The sort of liquid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.
- Where the vehicle is, and whether our van can safely get to and work on it.
Tell us your vehicle, the amount and if it has run, and you'll get a firm answer instead of a range. Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is fine for that.
Petrol in diesel: everyday queries in Edgehill
I'm on a forecourt in Edgehill. Can you drain the car on the spot?
Yes — forecourts are where a fair share of this happens. Regularly, provided the site consents: Penny Petrolium, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our engineers can work in that location is something our engineers answer on the spot.
How much petrol in a diesel is too much?
Litres aren't the yardstick. Proportion is, and much more than either, it matters if anything has been run. Five litres into an almost dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mix been sucked right through, or has it not?
I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?
Somewhere sensible, then stop, then switch off and keep it off. Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the problem out of your tank then into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays salvageable a lot more commonly than drivers assume.
My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?
It's not a change, so a drain and flush carried out correctly does not void a manufacturer's warranty. Another reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a dispute with one.
Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?
What petrol has diluted isn't restored by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a different issue. So no. Your tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and the pump still has to put up with it.
Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?
Not at all. Our technicians drain and clean the car wherever it is, so there's no need to take it to a main dealer.
You, and your vehicle, still together?
Shut off is how it stays.
If you have already driven it, pull in somewhere safe, switch it off then keep it off. Cold and still, a car is in the best position available — and drivers fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.
