Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Egypt

If you have not turned on your engine as yet, do not. A fuel drain and nothing else is almost always what a car needs while the fuel is still in that tank and the engine has not run, which is why it is the coming few minutes that matter, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel travels to the vehicle wherever it has ended up in Egypt or the rest of Gloucestershire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, and drains and cleans it there. Call us before anything else happens, and you will know what comes after that.

Petrol in a diesel: what to do first

  • Give a petrol motor diesel and it will usually fail to run at all, and so the motorist stops there and so does the harm. Feed a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it ticks over, it moves off — fine enough for a couple of miles. People have that reversed, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So never crank it. And if started, do not rely on it: the fuel system is wearing while you drive.
  • Two jobs, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps the high-pressure pump and injectors protected. Petrol only handles the one. That is why your ignition remains off also — turn it on and you commonly prime the system, and that is petrol exiting the tank for just those components.
  • Do not water down it. Diesel poured on top removes nothing, so all you get is more of what was already there, because percentage is not how a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol. Super unleaded? Simply petrol. The type makes no difference.
  • A vehicle that has not moved is the simplest one to handle, so wait where you are if you reasonably can. Parked on the verge on Stroud Road? Hazards on, then keep the vehicle there. An odd spot suits us better than a started diesel.
  • The van turning up instead of circling turns on two things: a postcode that starts GL6 0, and whatever is nearest to you with a sign on it. Have both prepared before you ring.
  • Three answers shape the full job: the fuel you tipped in, the ballpark measure involved, and whether anything has been turning since. Our number is 0333 366 0103.

Can petrol be pumped from your diesel on the forecourt?

Forecourts are where the work usually starts, and where a fair part of that closes. We operate on station forecourts regularly, with the station's agreement, so if you are still at Shell that is generally where this drain takes place.

Nowhere else but a forecourt can it be caught with your motor still cold. Fuel sucked out of the tank and through the fuel filter, all the way to your high-pressure pump, is what occurs when your engine is fired up and your car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush covers the filter and the fuel lines as well as your tank. That's still not a calamity, and our engineers put it right where your car stands. What determines it is whether the ignition was reached for in the seconds after the receipt was checked.

Out from the pump, the next motorist can get through — so yes, let the attendants help you wheel the vehicle. Worth doing. Starting the car just for four car lengths? Not a chance.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Egypt

Easy, these ones, and the reason is the miles: a mile at gentle throttle uses little fuel. Petrol into a diesel Peugeot 308 somewhere in Egypt, a boot loaded with shopping, and you stranded outside Morrisons — phone. Getting out of that space isn't worth another start. The tank gets cleared where it stands, the fuel lines cleaned, clean diesel in, and you drive home.

Your diesel Dacia Duster will have seemed completely usual on the way back from Nailsworth Church of England Primary School. They do, and that is the trap with petrol in a diesel rather than the other way round. Put diesel in a petrol motor and it generally will not run, and so the person stops and the wear stops with them. Put petrol in a diesel and it starts, idles and drives off as though nothing has happened — meanwhile the high-pressure fuel pump works without the lubrication your fuel is meant to be supplying. Nothing tells you, since from behind the wheel there's nothing to alert you about. Call us with approximately how far you went and how hard you pushed it; the second answer matters more than the first.

The parts that should be getting lubricated are grinding instead, and the car gives no sign of it: a diesel on a diluted tank starts and moves off just fine. Try the drive home from Village Inn? Not a chance. Phone us then leave the Mercedes E-Class where it sits.

New places are where this occurs most, and the reason is mechanical instead of careless: the smaller petrol nozzle goes into a modern diesel filler neck with practically no resistance at all. Filled up near Nailsworth Library without thinking, in a diesel BMW X1 you have had for two days? Call us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars often get driven further before anyone realises, and distance is what settles how much petrol gets to your injectors.

Somebody certain will tell you to drain the car then put clean diesel in. Half true, that. Try it on a diesel Kia Sportage close to The Nutshell Studios and the engine will start — which is precisely why it sounds like sense. Here's the problem: there's petrol left in the fuel filter and the feed lines, and the first thing your engine does is pull it back through the pump again. Draining a tank achieves nothing about fuel that already left your tank. Ring us. Your circuit gets rinsed, your filter comes off where there is one worth removing, and that's what separates a repaired motor from one that merely starts.

Coverage around Egypt

The same trips carry us to Watledge, Nailsworth, Forest Green, Walkleywood and Worley along with Egypt, which is a residential suburb.

Not on this list? It says nothing. The names above are simply the nearest few, and most towns around Gloucestershire have a page of their own elsewhere on this site. Ring us and ask instead of guessing — borders especially, and wherever your satnav might get wrong.

That map outlines the area the page spans. Your car does not need to move to us. Our technicians work throughout all of that — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Stranded on the roadside in Egypt

Not everyone has a suitable spot to pull in. If you worked it out after setting off and ended up on the verge beside Springhill Close, or at a lay-by somewhere with your hazards on, that is a normal call for us and not a rare one.

Whether you stay beside the motor or stand away from it rests on if being in it is safe. Never fire up the motor to nurse the car somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing the blend further into the system. A technician coming to a difficult spot is no trouble for us, and it's a lot better for the vehicle than carrying on.

Run it already? Pull in, then see this

This is where the local M5 comes into it — under 10 miles away from Egypt. It will often get you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it's some smoke, a lumpy idle and power draining away — not a clean stop. Misfuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

The first safe exit is the one to take. Switch off there, and leave the restarting alone. It changes what our engineers bring, so say so when you phone: on a longer drive — anything near the under 15 miles to the nearest city — take it the mixture has been through your filter, your pump and the fuel injectors.

A bit about Egypt

Egypt is a suburban area in Gloucestershire, situated on the riverside at an elevation of around 65 metres. Egypt lies near the towns of Nailsworth and Forest Green, and is close to the village of Watledge. Egypt is characterized by its predominantly detached housing stock, and is located approximately 11.6 miles from Gloucester and 90.7 miles from London.

What comes next when our technicians reach you in Egypt

  • The responses alter the work, which is why we ask before quoting: what got in, how much of that, and whether the engine has run.
  • The polluted mixture is pulled from the tank.
  • What is remaining in the system shouldn't be what created the issue, so the fuel lines get purged and the fuel filter cleaned.
  • Priming follows, once fresh diesel is in.
  • It's fired up with clean diesel in it, and our technicians confirm that it is running properly.

From there, you're ready to drive away. There's no need for a garage at any stage, as the work is all done where the car is, and when it's caught early, lasting damage is very rare.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Egypt is a distinct problem

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening step is unchanged — the engine remains off — while the fault under it is a different one altogether. Weakened diesel, and no protection left for the fuel system that depends on it. That is petrol. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it causes corrosion and deposits in its place.

AdBlue removal in Egypt has a page of its own with the detail on it, including why it is often the more significant of the two. We deal with both.

Paying for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Egypt

Our technicians can't put one figure on this page frankly, since the job is not one job. What shifts it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
  • Whether it was petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where your vehicle is, and if our van can safely reach and work on it.

The vehicle, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight and not as a range. For the vehicle at home that's going nowhere and isn't urgent, works too.

Petrol in diesel: frequent questions around Egypt

Fuel drains on a Egypt petrol station forecourt

Yes — forecourts are where a good portion of this happens. We visit BP and the other forecourts around town regularly, with the station's permission — tell us which one you're at when you call and we will tell you whether we can work there.

A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

It depends on the proportion rather than the litres, and a lot more on whether your motor has run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is needed is whether that mixture has been sucked through the system.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove the vehicle. What now?

Switch off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop. Driving is what shifts the problem from the tank into your pump and injectors — but it is salvageable a lot more frequently than people expect, and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart the car.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A drain then flush carried out properly is not an alteration and does not void a manufacturer's warranty. What is likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the engine to stay off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a separate problem and it does not restore what petrol has diluted. Your pump still has to live with it, because the tank still has petrol in it after that.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

Wherever your car is, our technicians drain and clean it there, so a drive to the main dealer does not come into it.

Waiting next to it?

Don't turn the engine back on.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, turn off, and no restarting it afterwards. Cold, parked, going nowhere: that is the best position to be in. Motorists fear this much more than they need to.
