Petrol in Diesel

Elder Street: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Never turn on the engine. If the petrol is still inside the tank and the motor has not been started, a fuel drain is almost always all it takes — and that gets settled in the following few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled cars where they sit, all over Elder Street and the rest of Essex, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway. One ring our way will be enough: we shall explain what happens from here. Try it straight away.

What to do now about petrol in a diesel

  • Give a petrol motor diesel and it will typically not run at all, so the driver stops there and so does the damage. Give a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it ticks over, it drives off — fine enough for a few miles. People have that backwards, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So don't start the car. And if started, do not trust it: the fuel system is grinding while you drive.
  • Turning the car's ignition on usually primes the system, and priming is what draws petrol out of the tank and into the pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps protected on its way through, before it burns. Petrol does the burning and none of the protecting. Leave your ignition be.
  • That guidance supposes a diesel fuel system copes with petrol by percentage. It will not. Tip diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you get is a bigger tank of the same mixture. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • Stay put if it's wise to. Hazards on, engine off, leave the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Thaxted Road, anywhere — an awkward place for us beats a started diesel, and nothing is easier for us to sort out than a car that never moved.
  • Keep your whereabouts ready before you call. A postcode that starts CB10 2 and whatever is nearest to you with a sign on it is the difference between the van showing up and our van circling.
  • Three details shape the whole visit: the fuel you put in, the ballpark quantity involved, and if anything has been running since. The number is 0333 366 0103.

Draining petrol from the diesel at the forecourt

Forecourts are where the job often begins, and where a large chunk of it closes. We work on station forecourts all the time, with the station's agreement, so if you are still at Tesco that is typically where the drain takes place.

A filling station is the only place it gets halted before your engine has started. The few seconds between checking the receipt and going for the key decide how much needs flushing. Everywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — your car was fired up and moved to get there, so fuel was sucked from the tank, through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure pump. That means the lines and your filter need flushing as well as your tank. It is not a catastrophe, and our technicians can still deal with it where the vehicle sits.

Staff will usually pitch in pushing it clear of the petrol pump, which lets the next motorist get through. Welcome the assistance. Shifting the car four bays does not merit cranking the engine.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Elder Street

If you have put petrol in your diesel Renault Clio around Elder Street and you are now stuck at Aldi with a boot full of shopping, ring us. Don't start it a second time to get out of that spot. We'll come out to you, clear your tank, clean the fuel lines then put new diesel in so you can drive home. A mile or so at easy throttle pulls very little diesel, so such jobs are usually the simple cases.

Put diesel in a petrol vehicle and mostly it will not run, and so the motorist stops there and the harm stops with them. Flip it — petrol into a diesel — and the thing fires up, idles and pulls away as though nothing had happened, whilst your high-pressure pump works without the protection the fuel is supposed to be giving. That's the trap, and it is why the diesel BMW 3 Series will have felt perfectly normal coming back from Debden Church of England Voluntary Controlled Primary Academy. They always do. From the driver's seat there is nothing to warn you about, so nothing alerts you. Call us with approximately how far you went, and how hard; the second answer matters more than the first.

Out there happy, back gutless. If that was the drive to Rowney Wood, look at the tank. Diesel gets diluted by petrol, and thin fuel leaks past the close gaps meant to build injection pressure — so every extra mile your diesel Dacia Duster covered, the less pressure it held onto. Somewhere safe, turn off, phone us.

Off the forecourt, receipt read, a few hundred yards, left near Debden Penticostal Church. For a diesel Mercedes E-Class whose motor has turned, that's about the best version there is. Ring us, and let the car stand with the ignition alone. Short assists, genuinely — but a start is a start and a drive is a drive, and your filter has had diluted fuel through it, and so has your pump. Which is why the fuel lines get cleaned and not just that tank emptied.

The fuel filter, the lines, your pump and its rail: that is where that mixture is once a diesel has run, and it doesn't come back out with the tank contents. So your tank is not where most of the trouble sits by this point, and a diesel Vauxhall Astra that got close to Debden needs the circuit flushed instead of emptied.

Areas we cover in Elder Street

Rowney Corner, Howlett End, Debden, Tye Green, Cole End — all of these on our trips that bring us out to Elder Street itself, a rural village.

Not on this list? That tells you nothing. The names above are simply the nearest few, and nearly all towns around Essex have a page of their own somewhere on this site. Guessing is the habit to avoid, above all on a boundary or somewhere a satnav struggles. Phone and ask.

This map marks the patch this page covers. We operate at the roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and at car parks throughout all of it, and your vehicle does not need to move to us.

Elder Street: stuck where you parked

Not everyone has a sensible place to pull in. Set off, then noticed? Landed along the verge on Parsonage Lane, or sat in some lay-by with the hazards on? That's a routine call here. Not a rare one.

Whether you sit by the motor or move away from it hangs on whether being in it looks wise. Don't start up the motor to limp the vehicle somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing that blend further into your fuel system. We will take the van to an awkward location without any fuss, and for the car that is far better than driving on.

Run it already? Pull in, then check below

under 5 miles from Elder Street, the M11 is what matters here. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will usually manage both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is rarely a neat stop. Power falls away, your idle turns rough, and there may be some smoke.

Come off at the first sensible exit, turn off, and never restart it to reposition. Long run? Anything approaching the under 25 miles to the nearest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it reached by the mixture. Say that on the phone, since it changes what goes in our van.

Where's Elder Street?

Elder Street is a small village in Essex, situated inland at an elevation of 111 metres, and is located near the villages of Rowney Corner, Howlett End, and Debden. Elder Street has a population of approximately 541 residents and features predominantly terraced housing. Elder Street is within commuting distance of major cities, including Cambridge, which is 16.7 miles away, and London, which is 37.7 miles away. Elder Street remains a quiet residential community with a rural character.

What comes next when we reach you in Elder Street

  • Our technicians ask first, price after. What got in? How much? Has the motor run? Those replies alter what the work really is.
  • Our technicians clear the tank of the contaminated mixture.
  • Fuel lines are cleaned through and the filter cleared, leaving nothing in your system that started any of this.
  • We pour fresh diesel in and prime the fuel system.
  • It is started with fresh diesel in it, and we check that it is running correctly.

That has it ready to set off. Everything is done where the vehicle is, so it never has to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been spotted soon, permanent damage is very uncommon.

A separate matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Elder Street

The fault is not the same, though the opening rule is — do not crank it — if what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol. The lubrication a fuel system relies on gets taken away by petrol, which weakens your diesel. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that causes corrosion and residue.

Both are ours. There is a separate Elder Street page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain in Elder Street?

What changes the figure is laid out below, as the job is not one job and our engineers can't honestly put a single figure on this page.

  • Has it been run or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, set against how much the tank takes.
  • AdBlue or unleaded, whichever was put in.
  • Where the car is, and if a technician can safely get to and work on it.

Tell us what your car is, how much went in, and whether your motor has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range. Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is fine for that.

Petrol in diesel questions from Elder Street motorists

At a petrol station around Elder Street, can you do a fuel drain there?

A fair part of this work takes place there, so yes. Routinely, provided the site consents: Gulf, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that place is something we answer straight away.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Litres aren't the measure. Ratio is, and much more than either, it counts whether anything has been run. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different scenarios, definitely. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is whether the system has had that mixture drawn through it.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove the car. Now what?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then turn off and leave it off. Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does move the problem out of the tank and into the pump and injectors, yes, and it remains fixable a lot more frequently than drivers fear.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

It isn't a change, and so a drain then flush carried out properly doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one, which is another reason to leave the car turned off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a distinct problem and it does not restore what petrol has weakened. After that? Still petrol in your tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Not at all. Our engineers drain and clean the car wherever it is, so there is no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.

Still with the vehicle?

Switched off is the way the car stays.

Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere sensible, turn off, and let it stay that way. Cold and still, a vehicle is in the best position available — and drivers fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.
