Eldindean: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?
With your tank still carrying the fuel and your engine not yet started, nearly every job requires only a drain, so leave the engine off. That outcome is decided in the minutes immediately after the fill-up, and not by the amount that was put in. All over Eldindean and the remainder of Midlothian, Petrol in Diesel drains the vehicle and flushes it where it stands, whether at a roadside, on a private drive or at a forecourt. Contact us and we will show you what comes after that before you attempt anything else.
What now? Petrol in a diesel, in turn
- Give a petrol motor diesel and it will usually not run at all, so the motorist stops there and so does the harm. Feed a diesel petrol and the car starts, it idles, it pulls away — all right for a few miles. People have that backwards, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So do not fire it up. And having started, do not trust it: that fuel system is wearing down as you drive.
- Turning the ignition on often primes your system, and priming is what draws petrol out of that tank then into your pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps oiled on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol does the burning and none of the lubricating. Leave your ignition off.
- Never thin it. Diesel put on top gets rid of nothing, and so all you get is more of what was already there, because percentage is not how a diesel fuel system copes with petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The type makes no difference.
- A vehicle that has never shifted is the quickest one to sort out, and so stay where you are if you sensibly can. Parked on the verge on Eldindean Terrace? Hazards on, and leave the vehicle there. An odd place works for us better than a started engine.
- Have your position ready before you ring. A postcode beginning EH19 2 and whatever is nearest to you with a label on it is the difference between our van arriving and a van circling.
- Phone 0333 366 0103. Tell us what went in, about how much, plus if the car has run. These three facts settle the entire job.
Can petrol be pumped out of your diesel at the forecourt?
A good share of this job gets done at a pump, because that's where it often begins. The drain normally gets done on the spot. Still on the forecourt at Tesco? Given the owner's agreement, that's a place our engineers work, and often.
Nowhere other than a garage can this be spotted with the engine still unstarted. The few seconds between seeing the till receipt and going for your key determine how much needs cleaning. Anywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — your car was switched on and driven to get there, so fuel was sucked from your tank, through the fuel filter and into your high-pressure pump. That means the fuel lines and your filter require cleaning as well as your tank. It is not a calamity, and we can still sort it out where your car sits.
Away from the petrol pump, the next customer can get by — so yes, let the staff help you roll the car. Well worth doing. Firing the car over four vehicle lengths? No.
Tell us this much and our technicians can work with it: a diesel Skoda Octavia, some litres of unleaded in it, two miles or so, shut off outside Co-op Food now. Time passed isn't the thing our engineers need. Fuel pulled by the pump is.
Injection pressure is the part being lost. Petrol thins diesel, and weaker fuel leaks past the tightly fitted components that are supposed to build that pressure, and so the farther a diesel Ford Focus travelled, the less well it held. Normal on the way out and gutless on the way back is how that trip to Broomieknowe Park went, then, and that tank is where to look. Pull over somewhere safe, turn off and ring us.
Clearing your Audi A3, changing the fuel filter where there is a workable one, flushing the fuel lines, putting fresh fuel through the entire system: that is the job, and it's shaped by the worst of that waiting in the fuel lines rather than in your tank by this point. Three things help when you call from near Bonnyrigg Parish Church — which side the filler is on, whether a van can park next to without blocking the road, and whether the engine has run since you filled up. On-street is the most common location we work, and so the place itself is rarely the problem. A narrow parking bay beats a car driven somewhere more handy.
Authorisation first, where there is a hire firm or a company behind the vehicle — some agreements require it, and settling that beforehand saves a great deal of time later. After that, phone us about the diesel Kia Sportage close to Madinah Masjid & Community Centre. You will not know how full the tank was. Hardly anyone does, two days into a car, and it gets worked out there all the same. Our technicians ask because the damage petrol does in a diesel is proportional: a few litres in a nearly empty tank make a much stronger mix than the same few in a full one, and since petrol is engineered to resist igniting under pressure, which is precisely what a diesel relies on, the stronger it gets the more your engine rattles and smokes and flattens off.
The fuel filter, the fuel lines, your pump and the rail: that is where that mixture is once a diesel has run, and it does not come back out with the tank contents. So the tank is not where most of the damage sits by this point, and a diesel Vauxhall Insignia that got near New Dundas Park needs the circuit cleared instead of cleared.
Service around Eldindean
Lasswade, Quarryhead, Waverley, Broomieknowe, Bonnyrigg — every one of them on the rounds that bring us over to Eldindean as well, a residential suburb.
There are pages for the majority of places in Midlothian, and the ones mentioned above are merely the nearest neighbours — so yours being missing from this list says nothing at all about whether our technicians come. Ring us to check instead of assuming, especially when you're on a boundary or anywhere your phone misreads.
Check our map for the patch covered on this page. Every bit of that is ground our engineers serve: a kerbside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You do not drive your car anywhere.
Stuck at the kerbside around Eldindean
Some people have no sensible spot to pull in at all. Set off, then noticed? Finished up on the verge on Viewbank Drive, or sat in some lay-by with the hazard lights on? That is a routine call here. Not a rare one.
Fine there? Remain by it. Not fine? Move out and away from it. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol draws that blend further into your fuel system — and oblige it often will, which is why the engine doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere better. Our van heading to a difficult location is no bother for us, and it's much better for your car than driving on.
Petrol in a diesel, but the car has rolled
under 10 miles from Eldindean, your M8 is what matters now. A loss of power, a lumpy idle, some smoke: those are the symptoms when they come, rather than a tidy stop — and a misfuelled diesel will usually get you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong at all.
Take the first exit that's sensible, pull up there, and never start it to reposition. Long trip? Anything approaching the under 10 miles to the closest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it got to by the mixture. Say that on the phone, as it alters what goes in our van.
Eldindean itself
Eldindean is a suburban area located inland in Midlothian, Scotland, with an elevation of around 100 metres. Eldindean sits approximately 6 miles south of Edinburgh, near the communities of Lasswade and Quarryhead. Eldindean is characterized by its predominantly semi-detached housing stock, which is typical of many suburban areas in the region. Eldindean is also situated near Waverley, and is around 325 miles north of London.
When we reach you around Eldindean: what follows
- Our engineers ask first, price after. What was put in? How much? Has your engine run? Those answers shape what the work actually is.
- The polluted fuel comes from that tank.
- Our technicians flush the lines and clean the fuel filter, and so what is remaining in your system isn't what created the trouble.
- The fuel system gets primed, on fresh diesel.
- It's fired up with new diesel in it, and we make sure that it is running properly.
That leaves your car ready to set off. There is no need for a workshop at any stage, as the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it's noticed quickly, permanent damage is very unusual.
A distinct matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Eldindean
AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the first rule is unchanged — your motor stays off — whereas this problem underneath it's a distinct one altogether. Weakened diesel, and no protection left for the fuel system that relies on it. That's petrol. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus build-up.
Usually the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the detail lives on its own Eldindean page. Both are ours to deal with.
What a petrol-in-diesel drain costs in Eldindean
One price would not be fair here, since this isn't one job. These are the things that change it:
- This is the key one: whether the motor has been started, or driven.
- Wrong fuel in, against what that tank holds — that proportion.
- Whether it was unleaded or AdBlue.
- Where the car is, and whether our van can sensibly reach and work on it.
A straight answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: your vehicle, the quantity, and if it has run. For the vehicle at home that is going nowhere and is not urgent, works too.
Eldindean motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel
At a petrol station in Eldindean, can you do a fuel drain there?
Yes, and it's where a fair part of this work gets done. Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like another forecourt nearby is somewhere we're often enough, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you will hear whether working there is possible.
How much petrol in a diesel is too much?
Litres aren't the measure. Proportion is, and much more than either, it counts whether anything has been run. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct situations, definitely. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is if your fuel system has had that blend drawn through it.
Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What then?
Stop somewhere sensible, switch off, and keep it off. Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does shift the problem out of the tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it remains fixable much more commonly than people fear.
Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?
A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain and flush done to a good standard, which is no alteration at all. What is likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the engine to stay off.
Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?
No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a distinct problem and it doesn't replace what petrol has diluted. That tank still has petrol in it after that, and the pump still has to live with it.
A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?
No. Our technicians drain and clean the car wherever it is, so there's no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.
Standing next to it?
Your engine remains off.
If you have already driven the vehicle, stop somewhere sensible, turn it off then keep it off. A stationary, cold vehicle is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from far more commonly than motorists assume.
