Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Ellel?

Do not start the motor. If the fuel is still sitting in the tank and the engine has not been started, a fuel drain is nearly always all it requires — and that gets determined in the coming few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled cars where they sit, throughout Ellel and the remainder of Lancashire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive. Phone and we will show you what happens next before you do anything else.

What to try next about petrol in a diesel

  • Do not start the vehicle. Fired up anyway? Then never rely on it. Diesel in a petrol motor generally can't run, and so the motorist stops and the wear stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It pulls away fine, for a few miles. Motorists get that reversed. It's not okay — that fuel system is wearing down every mile you do.
  • Leave your ignition be also. Diesel has two tasks: it burns, and before it ignites it lubricates that injection pump and its injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. Turning your ignition on is often enough to prime the system, which carries that petrol out of that tank then into precisely those parts.
  • Do not pour diesel on top to water down it. A diesel fuel system doesn't cope with petrol by percentage as that guidance suggests, and topping up takes out nothing — it simply gives you a bigger tank of the same mix. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.
  • A motor that has not moved is the easiest one to deal with, and so stay where you are if you sensibly can. Pulled up on the verge on Chapel Lane? Hazards on, then leave it there. A difficult place suits us better than a started diesel.
  • Our van turning up instead of circling hinges on two things: a postcode that starts LA2 0, and whatever is closest to you with a sign on it. Keep both ready before you call.
  • Call 0333 366 0103. Let us know what was put in, approximately how much, plus whether the motor has run. These three details determine your whole job.

On a forecourt: removing petrol from your diesel

Plenty of the work begins at the pump, which means a large chunk of it ends up completed at one. Our technicians work on garage forecourts regularly, with the owner's consent, and so if you're still at Bailrigg Motors that is normally where the drain gets done.

A filling station is the one place it gets spotted before the motor has fired. Everywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — your car was fired up and driven to get there, which means fuel was sucked from the tank, through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That is not a calamity, and we can still sort it out where it is. It does mean the lines and your filter need cleaning as well as your tank, and that is determined by the few seconds between reading the till receipt and reaching for the keys.

Move the car out of the way if the attendants volunteer, and they usually will. The next customer gets past the petrol pump, and that is worth doing. Starting the car just for four car lengths? Not a chance.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Ellel

How much fuel the pump has pulled is what we are really asking — not how long ago any of it was. So the phone call our engineers want goes like this: diesel Skoda Octavia, a few litres of unleaded, a couple of miles done, now switched off at Booths.

How far, and how hard? The second of those matters more than the first, so have both ready. Your Nissan Qashqai will have seemed completely ordinary on the way back from Ellel St John the Evangelist Church of England Primary School — they all do, and that's the catch. Diesel into a petrol motor generally won't run at all: the motorist stops, and so does the harm. Petrol into a diesel fires up, idles, drives off like nothing happened, while your high-pressure pump gets on with its work minus the protection the fuel should be giving it. No warning appears, since behind the wheel nothing looks wrong.

You drive off at the end, once we have fired it up and checked it runs properly on clean diesel, with the fuel system bled. Before that, in the car park by The Beer Hall, the polluted fuel comes out of the tank, your lines get cleaned and the filter comes off where your Peugeot 3008 has a serviceable one. Everything starts with three questions when we get to the car: what went in, how much of it, and whether it has been fired up since.

Out there happy, back flat. If that was the drive to Cockshades Wood, look at your tank. Diesel gets weakened by petrol, and thin fuel leaks past the close gaps supposed to build injection pressure — so every additional mile your diesel Audi A3 covered, the less pressure it held onto. Somewhere sensible, turn off, phone us.

Authorisation first, where there is a hire firm or a company behind the car — some agreements insist on it, and settling that beforehand saves a great deal of time later. After that, call us about your diesel Ford Kuga near Galgate Methodist Church. You'll not know how full your tank was. Barely anybody does, two days into a car, and it gets worked out on the spot anyway. Our technicians ask because the damage petrol does in a diesel is proportional: a couple of litres in a nearly empty tank make a much stronger mixture than the same few in a full one, and since petrol is built to resist igniting under pressure, which is exactly what a diesel relies on, the stronger it gets the more the engine rattles and smokes and flattens off.

Ellel plus the villages beside it

As a coastal village, Ellel gets a steady visit, and its neighbours close by go along on the same round: Galgate and Smith Green, Bailrigg and Hampson Green, Conder Green.

Our technicians still come. Those names above are only the nearest neighbours, and a page exists for the majority of locations in Lancashire, so an absence from the list isn't an absence from our coverage. Call us to ask rather than guessing, above all if you are on a boundary or somewhere your phone struggles with.

The ground this page includes sits on our map. The car does not need to move to us. We operate over the lot — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Stuck on the kerbside near Ellel

Some people get no suitable spot to pull in at all. If you noticed after setting off and landed on the verge beside Langshaw Lane, or in a lay-by somewhere with your hazards flashing, that is a common call for us rather than an unusual one.

Clear of the car while it isn't wise to wait there, by it if it is. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags the mixture further into the system — and oblige it usually will, which is why your engine does not get restarted to limp somewhere better. However awkward the spot, it is no bother for us to come to it, and that is much better for the vehicle than driving on.

Petrol in a diesel, and the vehicle has gone

Here is where the M6 comes in — under a mile away from Ellel. A loss of power, a rough idle, some smoke: those are the symptoms when they arrive, instead of a neat stop — and a misfilled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong at all.

The first sensible exit is the one to take. Turn off there, then leave the restarting alone. Long drive? Anything approaching the under 5 miles to the closest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it got to by the petrol. Say that on the phone, because it affects what goes in the van.

A bit about Ellel

Ellel is a small village in Lancashire, situated near the coast and approximately 3.6 miles from Lancaster. Ellel has a relatively low elevation of 28 metres and is surrounded by nearby places such as Galgate and Bailrigg. Ellel is characterized by its semi-detached housing and is home to around 1906 residents. Ellel is located in the North West region of England, about 204.9 miles from London.

When our engineers get to you in Ellel: what follows

  • Three things get checked before any quote — the fuel that got in, the quantity, and if anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.
  • The tainted fuel is pulled out of that tank.
  • What is remaining in the system should not be what started the problem, and so the lines get cleaned and the filter cleared.
  • Clean diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets bled.
  • It's started with clean diesel in it, and we confirm that it's running correctly.

That leaves it ready to drive away. Long-term damage is very uncommon when it has been spotted early, and because all of it is done where the car is, it never needs to be taken to a workshop.

AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, around Ellel?

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the opening rule is unchanged — the motor stays off — whereas the issue underneath it's a distinct one altogether. The protection a fuel system depends on gets taken away by petrol, which thins the diesel. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that causes corrosion and deposits.

Often the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the details sits on its own Ellel page. Both are ours to deal with.

Ellel pricing for a petrol-in-diesel drain

Our technicians can't put one price on this page truthfully, as this job is not one job. What changes it:

  • Has it been run or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, judged against how much that tank holds.
  • Whether it was unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can our van get to it and work there safely?

The car, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back clear rather than as a range. Not pressing, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

Things our engineers get about petrol in diesel in Ellel

Fuel drains on a Ellel petrol station forecourt

Yes — forecourts are where a large portion of this takes place. Often, provided the site consents: JET, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether we can work in that place is something our engineers answer on the spot.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Whether the engine has run matters far more, though the ratio counts too, rather than the litres. Five litres into an almost dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that blend been drawn right through, or has it not?

I put petrol in my diesel and drove the car. What next?

Switch off somewhere safe, then keep it that way after you stop. It is salvageable much more commonly than motorists fear, even though driving is what shifts the trouble from that tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A drain and flush carried out properly isn't a modification and does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

Two-stroke oil in the tank, and then home?

What petrol has diluted isn't put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old fix for a different problem. So no. Petrol remains in that tank later on, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no respite from it.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

You do not need one. The vehicle is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to take it to a main dealer.

Waiting next to it?

Shut off is how it stays.

Switch it off somewhere safe then leave it off, if you have already driven it. This is recoverable from far more frequently than drivers expect, and a still, cold vehicle is the best position to be in.
