Endcliffe Edge: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?
Don't fire up the engine. If the fuel is still in your tank and your engine has not turned over, a fuel drain is nearly always all it takes — and that is decided in the next few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled vehicles where they sit, all over Endcliffe Edge and the rest of South Yorkshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway. Contact us before all else happens, and you'll see what comes next.
The first five minutes: petrol in a diesel
- Do not crank it — and never rely on it when it runs. That is the thing most people get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol motor given diesel normally just cannot run, and so the motorist stops and the damage ends with them. A diesel fed petrol usually starts, idles and moves off just fine for a couple of miles. It isn't okay. It's wearing that fuel system whenever you drive.
- Two jobs, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps your high-pressure pump and injectors lubricated. Petrol only handles the one. Which is why the car's ignition remains off also — turn it on and you often prime your system, and that's petrol leaving that tank for precisely those components.
- Topping up clears nothing. It gives you a bigger tank of the same mix, since a diesel fuel system does not handle petrol by percentage in the way that advice assumes — so don't tip diesel on top to water down it. Octane is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.
- Our team would rather get to an odd place than have it started — so if you safely can, sit tight. Nothing is easier to handle than a car that hasn't shifted. On the verge on Endcliffe Hall Avenue, that means hazards on and leave the car.
- Have your position ready before you phone. A postcode that starts S10 3 and whatever is closest to you with a sign on it is the difference between the van arriving and a van circling.
- Three answers shape the entire call-out: the stuff you put in, the ballpark amount involved, plus if it has been running since. The number is 0333 366 0103.
On a forecourt: clearing petrol from the diesel
A big portion of the job gets completed at a pump, because that's where it often starts. If you're still on the forecourt at Esso, that is generally where the drain happens — we work on garage forecourts all the time, with the owner's agreement.
At a garage, it gets caught with the motor never started, and no place else manages it. Fuel pulled out of that tank and through your filter, right to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what occurs when your engine is fired up and the car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush takes in the filter and the fuel lines as well as that tank. That is still not a calamity, and our engineers deal with it where the car stands. What determines it is whether the ignition was turned in the seconds after the till receipt was checked.
Out from the petrol pump, the next customer can get past — so yes, let the staff help you roll it. Worth it. Starting the car to shift four vehicle lengths isn't.
Can we reach your part of Endcliffe Edge?
Endcliffe Edge is a residential suburb, so we are out to the town and to anywhere near it on the same runs: Tapton Hill, Endcliffe Crescent, Ranmoor, Summerfield and Greystones.
There are pages for most places around South Yorkshire, and the ones listed above are simply the nearest neighbours — so yours being left off this list means nothing whatsoever about whether we come. Guessing is the habit to resist, especially on the boundary or anywhere the satnav fails. Ring us to ask.
This map shows the patch the page includes. We work by the road, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks across all of it, and the vehicle does not need to travel to us.
Nothing alerts you, since from behind the wheel there is nothing to be warned about. Your diesel Ford Focus will have seemed completely usual on the way back from St Marie's School, A Catholic Voluntary Academy, and they all do — which is the trap with petrol in a diesel and not the reverse. Diesel in a petrol vehicle generally refuses to run, stopping the driver and stopping the damage with them. Petrol in a diesel starts, idles, moves off as though nothing had happened, and all the while your pump does its work without the protection its fuel is meant to supply. Tell us roughly how far, and how hard. The harder counts more.
It will fire up. It will drive off perfectly well. That's the trouble, as a diesel on a thinned tank behaves normally while wearing down the components its fuel should be protecting. So no, don't chance the trip home from The Florentine — leave the Peugeot 3008 then phone.
Here is the full process. Diesel needs enough body to seal the fine clearances it goes through, and petrol takes that away. That is it. Which explains the ordinary Upper Endcliffe Wood call — a diesel Mercedes E-Class, out there without fuss and back down on power, uneven at idle, perhaps a bit of smoke. Injection systems work hydraulically as well as chemically, so the fuel has to hold pressure and not just burn; thinned, it bleeds past those tolerances instead of building, and delivery comes poorer, later, less even than the motor was designed about. Not a failing motor, though. Fuel that has stopped behaving like diesel. Put that right and it stops.
Clattering, a lumpy idle, white smoke, a throttle gone limp. That's a wrongly fuelled diesel BMW 5 Series telling you what is wrong. Turn off where you have stopped, close to Nether Spurgear Wheel Marker Post or anywhere else, and don't start the car to find a better location.
The filter, the lines, your pump and the rail: that is where that mixture is once a diesel has run, and it does not come back out with the tank contents. So the tank isn't where most of the trouble sits by this point, and a diesel Citroen C4 that got close to Ethel Haythornthwaite needs your system flushed instead of drained.
Stuck by the kerbside near Endcliffe Edge
Not everybody gets a chance to stop somewhere sensible. A common call for us rather than an odd one: noticed after setting off, landed on the verge of Endcliffe Vale Road or at a lay-by with the hazards going.
Remain by the motor if it's sensible to sit there, and out of the car when it is not. It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that's the catch: start it up to reach somewhere safer and the mixture goes further into the fuel system with every mile covered. Driving on does the car far more harm than a technician heading out to an inconvenient location, and that is no problem for us.
Already run it? Petrol in a diesel after some miles
The local Tinsley Viaduct is the road which matters here, and it runs under 10 miles from Endcliffe Edge. It will usually get you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it is smoke, an uneven idle and power draining away — not a neat stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.
Take the first exit that's safe, stop there, and don't start the car to reposition. Suppose the worst of it on a long trip. Anything approaching the under 3 miles to the nearest city, and the mixture has been through the fuel filter, through your pump, through your injectors. Say so when you phone. What our technicians bring changes.
Endcliffe Edge itself
Endcliffe Edge is a suburban area situated on the riverside in South Yorkshire, close to the city of Sheffield. Endcliffe Edge sits at an elevation of 161 metres, overlooking the surrounding landscape. Endcliffe Edge is characterised by its predominantly flat-type housing and is located near other notable areas such as Tapton Hill and Ranmoor. Endcliffe Edge is approximately 2 miles from Sheffield city centre, making it a convenient residential location.
Our visit around Endcliffe Edge, step by step
- We establish what went in, how much, and whether the engine has run. The responses shape the work, which is why we ask before giving a price.
- The tank is emptied of everything.
- Lines flushed, filter cleaned. Whatever remains afterwards isn't the thing that caused the issue.
- The fuel system gets primed, on clean diesel.
- Our engineers turn it on and check it runs correctly on new diesel.
At that point it is ready to pull away. Our engineers do all of it wherever the car has stopped, which means it never needs to go to a workshop, and if it has been spotted soon, it is very rare for there to be lasting damage.
Endcliffe Edge AdBlue removal is a different job
If what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the first step is unchanged — don't start the vehicle — but this issue isn't. Thinned diesel, and no lubrication left for your fuel system that depends on it. That's petrol. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus build-up.
Frequently the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the detail sits on its own Endcliffe Edge page. Both are ours to handle.
Endcliffe Edge costs for a petrol-in-diesel drain
We cannot put one number on this page honestly, as the job is not one job. What changes it:
- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
- How much of the wrong fuel got in, judged against how much that tank can hold.
- AdBlue or unleaded, whichever got in.
- Access: the vehicle's position, and whether working on it there is safe for our van.
Tell us what the vehicle is, how much went in, and whether your engine has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range. Not pressing, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then works.
Petrol in diesel queries from Endcliffe Edge motorists
I am on a forecourt around Endcliffe Edge. Can you drain it here?
A large share of this work happens there, so yes. Tell us which one you're at when you phone and we'll tell you whether our technicians can work there. With the site's consent our technicians visit JET and the other forecourts nearby all the time.
How much petrol is too much for a diesel?
Proportion settles it instead of litres — and more than either, whether the motor has run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is needed is whether that blend has been drawn through your fuel system.
I put petrol in my diesel and drove the car. What now?
Turn off somewhere sensible, and keep it that way after you stop. Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does move the issue out of the tank then into the pump and injectors, yes, and it remains fixable much more commonly than motorists assume.
Will a fuel drain void my warranty?
A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain then flush done to a correct standard, which is no change at all. What's likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the engine to stay off.
Two-stroke oil in the tank, and then home?
What petrol has thinned is not restored by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a separate problem. So no. Petrol remains in that tank after that, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no respite from it.
Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?
Wherever your car is, our engineers drain and clean it there, so a trip to the main dealer doesn't come into it.
Is your vehicle still with you?
Don't turn the engine on again.
Turn it off somewhere sensible and leave it off, if you have already driven it. Cold, still, going nowhere: that is the best place to be in. Motorists fear this a lot more than they need to.
