Petrol in a Diesel Car in Epsom Downs
Don't fire up the motor. While the fuel is still sitting in the tank and the engine has not turned over, a fuel drain is almost always all it needs — and that is determined in the following few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled vehicles where they are, across Epsom Downs and the remainder of Surrey, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway. One ring to us will be enough: our engineers can tell you what comes after this. Make it right away.
What to try first about petrol in a diesel
- Don't start the car. Started all the same? Then don't depend on it. Diesel in a petrol motor typically can't run, and so the motorist stops and the wear stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It pulls away fine, for a couple of miles. Motorists get that confused. It is not fine — that fuel system is grinding every mile you drive.
- Leave the ignition off as well. Diesel does two tasks: it burns, and before it combusts it greases your high-pressure pump and those injectors. Petrol does the first but not the second. Turning the car's ignition on is usually sufficient to prime that system, which carries that petrol out of that tank then into exactly those components.
- Do not tip diesel on top to weaken it. A diesel fuel system does not handle petrol by percentage the way that advice assumes, and topping up clears nothing — it just leaves you a fuller tank of the same mixture. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.
- Stay put if it's wise to. Hazards on, motor off, leave it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Longdown Lane South, anywhere — a difficult location for us beats a started diesel, and nothing is quicker for us to handle than a motor that never shifted.
- Know where you are before ringing. A postcode that starts KT17 4, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise the van circles rather than arriving.
- Three details decide your whole job: the liquid you put in, the rough amount involved, plus whether anything has been going since. Our number is 0333 366 0103.
Can petrol be taken from a diesel on the forecourt?
A large portion of the work ends up finished at a forecourt, because that's where it often kicks off. If you are still on the forecourt at Texaco, that is generally where the drain happens — our technicians work on garage forecourts all the time, with the owner's permission.
At the forecourt, this is stopped with your motor never started, and no place else does that. The few seconds between checking the till receipt and reaching for your key decide how much requires cleaning. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — your car was started and driven to get there, so fuel was drawn from your tank, through the fuel filter then into your high-pressure pump. That means the fuel lines and the fuel filter need rinsing as well as your tank. It is not a calamity, and we can still sort it out where the car stands.
The attendants will usually offer to roll it out from the petrol pump so the next customer can get by. That is worth doing. Shifting the car four spaces does not warrant firing the engine.
Do we cover your corner of Epsom Downs?
Being a rural village, Epsom Downs sees a routine call, and its neighbours close by go along on the same trip: Nork and Great Burgh, Woodcote and North Looe, Epsom.
If yours isn't on this list that does not mean we don't come — there are dedicated pages for the majority of places in Surrey, and the ones mentioned above are just the nearest neighbours. On a border, or anywhere your phone gets wrong? Call us and enquire rather than presuming.
This map shows the area the page covers. Your vehicle doesn't need to travel to us. We operate across every bit of it — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.
Twenty to nine at the gates of Warren Mead Infant School, running late, and the till receipt in your hand shows unleaded. Hazards on, motor off, phone us. Three miles in the Skoda Octavia seems like nothing, but a diesel pump delivers fuel on demand — and a hurried morning drive needs plenty.
Simple job, this one — till somebody takes it home. A diesel Nissan Qashqai sitting by Tattenham Corner with petrol in that tank loses nothing by sitting there overnight, so park the vehicle and phone us once it is light. Expect a query about the run there, though. Short and chilly is precisely where petrol struggles to burn, and what won't burn can work past the rings then into the sump.
Stop somewhere safe, switch off and ring us. Happy on the way out to Epsom Downs Golf Club, sluggish on the way back? Then look at that tank. Petrol weakens diesel; runnier fuel leaks past the tightly fitted parts that build injection pressure; and the further the diesel BMW 5 Series went, the less of that pressure it held.
Draining your Peugeot 208, changing your filter where there's a serviceable one, flushing your lines, putting clean fuel through the full system: that's the job, and it's shaped by the worst of that resting in your lines instead of in your tank by this point. Three things help when you call from close to View Point — which side the filler is on, whether a technician can park next to without blocking the road, and if the engine has run since you filled up. On-street is the commonest place we work, and so the place itself is hardly ever the issue. A tight parking space is better than a motor driven somewhere more handy.
Rattling, a ragged idle, white smoke, a throttle gone soft. That's a misfilled diesel Citroen C3 telling you what's wrong. Switch off where you have stopped, close to Tattenhams Community Library or anywhere else, and never start the vehicle to find a better spot.
Stuck at the roadside near Epsom Downs
The opportunity to pull over anywhere safe doesn't fall to everyone. If you worked it out after setting off and ended up by the verge on Ruden Way, or at a lay-by somewhere with your hazards flashing, that's a common call for us instead of an unusual one.
Out of the vehicle when it's not safe to sit inside, beside it if it is. Do not start it up to reach a better spot. It will go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls the blend deeper into the fuel system. Pressing on causes the vehicle far more harm than our van coming out to a tricky place, and that's no trouble for us.
Driven it already? Stop, and check this
The M25 is the one which matters now, and it sits under 3 miles from Epsom Downs. It will frequently take you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it is some smoke, a lumpy idle and power ebbing away — not a neat stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.
Do not restart it to move it. Pull off at the first safe junction and switch off. On a longer trip — anything close to the under 15 miles to the closest city — assume the mixture has been through your filter, the pump and the fuel injectors, and tell us when you ring. It changes what we bring.

What happens when our engineers reach you around Epsom Downs
- The answers change the work, which is why we ask before quoting: what was put in, how much of it, and if your engine has run.
- The tainted fuel is pulled out of that tank.
- Our engineers clean your fuel lines and clear your filter, so what is left in your system isn't what caused the problem.
- Our engineers pour clean diesel in and prime the system.
- The motor is fired up and tested to be sure it runs smoothly on clean diesel.
Your car is then ready for you to drive away. There is no need for a garage at any point, because the work is all done where your car is, and when it's noticed quickly, permanent damage is very uncommon.
Epsom Downs AdBlue removal is a separate job
The fault isn't the same, though the first step is — never fire it up — if what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol. Petrol thins your diesel and strips the protection your fuel system depends on. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that causes corrosion and deposits.
Both are ours. There is a separate Epsom Downs page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.
Epsom Downs prices for a petrol-in-diesel drain
Our engineers can't put one number on this page honestly, because this job is not one job. What shifts it:
- This is the big one: whether the engine has been started, or driven.
- How much of the wrong fuel got in, compared with how much that tank holds.
- Which got in: unleaded or AdBlue.
- Where is it? And can a van reach it and work there sensibly?
The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back clear and not as a range. For your car at home that's going nowhere and isn't time-critical, works too.
Questions our technicians hear about petrol in diesel around Epsom Downs
Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Epsom Downs?
Much of what our technicians do happens nowhere else. So yes. Our engineers visit Asda and the other forecourts around town all the time, with the owner's consent — tell us which one you are at when you phone and we'll tell you whether our technicians can work there.
How much petrol is too much for a diesel?
Litres are not the measure. Ratio is, and a lot more than either, it counts whether anything has been run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is required is if that mix has been pulled through the fuel system.
Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it
Somewhere sensible, then stop, then switch off and keep it off. Driving shifts the problem along — out of the tank, into the pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one truly helpful thing left to you isn't restarting it.
Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?
It's not a change, and so a drain then flush carried out properly doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a dispute with one, which is another reason to leave it switched off.
Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?
No. It belongs to a different problem from a separate era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind restores. Petrol stays in that tank after that, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no respite from it.
Main dealers and petrol in a diesel
There is no need to bring it to a main dealer, because our technicians drain and clean the car wherever it is.
You, and your car, still together?
Shut off is how the car stays.
Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, switch off, and no restarting the car later. A still, cold car is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from much more commonly than people fear.
