Esgyryn: Petrol in a Diesel Car? Here Is What Happens
Whatever you do, don't switch your engine on, even for a moment, to move it. Pause; leave the vehicle off. Cleared and cleaned, right where it sits: that is generally all an unrun diesel with petrol in it needs. Whether it stays that simple rests on the minutes to come far more than on anything else. What follows is the sequence from this point, wherever in Esgyryn you happen to be.
Petrol in a diesel? What to do in minute one
First, the following — following this sequence.
- Take your keys out. Even the ignition by itself can prime the fuel system, drawing petrol out of your tank to precisely the parts it harms, so leave the vehicle off entirely.
- Don't top it up with diesel. Adding diesel removes nothing. You end up with a bigger tank of the same mix.
- Hazards on. If you are anywhere close to moving traffic, make the car easy to see before you do anything else.
- Off the petrol pump by hand. At a forecourt, get the staff to help you push the vehicle clear of the pump. Do not fire it up to move it, however short the distance.
- Hold on to your receipt. It shows which fuel was put in plus about how much, which is the first thing we'll ask.
On the Moreton Spur, under 50 miles from Esgyryn, the next junction is the spot to come off; anywhere, the first safe spot to stop. Do not press on to the services. Then go back to step one.
The fork in each Esgyryn fuel drain: has it run yet?
Everything after this stage rests on one answer.
Engine not run at all?
- Just the tank has petrol in it so far.
- A drain and flush, on the spot, is usually all of it.
- No spot is better, and it's why the first step counts so much.
Run at all, however briefly:
- Petrol has been drawn out of that tank, through the fuel filter then into the lines.
- On a longer run it has reached your high-pressure pump as well as the fuel injectors.
- Flushing the lines, the filter dealt with, occasionally more: the job grows as the miles does.
Diesel keeps your high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors oiled as it runs through them. Petrol offers them nothing, and that is why the line is drawn there. Nothing is harmed by petrol that is just sitting in a tank. Move that petrol, though, and it grinds down the very parts that move it.
Before you call about petrol in a diesel around Esgyryn: what we need
A technician that circles versus a van that finds you: a little preparation is the difference.
- Your location: a postcode starting LL31 9 works best.
- Give the street — Esgyryn Road or wherever you have stopped — or the car park.
- Car parks are found more easily by what they serve: tell us the one at Asda, and it's straightforward.
- The make and model of the vehicle, and the fact it's a diesel.
- Say which went in — petrol or AdBlue — because AdBlue is a different job, with a page of its own for Esgyryn.
- How much. Litres from your receipt, or how long the nozzle was in the filler.
- Has it run? If so, tell us how far it got, and the way it was driven.
- Hire or company car? Some agreements want the owner's authorisation for this work, and sorting it before our technicians arrive is faster than after.
Call 0333 366 0103 next. Email works too if it can wait, with the vehicle parked at home, going nowhere.
Waiting for a fuel drain around Esgyryn: what to do
Hold to these: well-meant help causes the harm during the wait.
- Safety before the car. If it has stopped somewhere dangerous, get yourself clear of the traffic and wait away from it. If it's safe where it is, wait with it.
- A helpful passer-by does not fire it up. Nor does anyone wanting to check it still does the trick, or rolling it a few yards.
- Additives remain in the boot. Injector cleaner and two-stroke oil take none of that petrol out again.
- A DIY drain misses your fuel that has already gone beyond that tank, and siphoning petrol by the road is risky besides.
- Keep your ignition off — the windows and your radio included.
The fuel drain, step by step, once the van arrives
- Fuel, volume, whether it's run: the replies set this job, and that is why you get a quote after them rather than before.
- Then that tank is drained, and the polluted fuel is taken out.
- Petrol that has moved beyond that tank sits in your lines if it ran, and the lines are cleaned to clear it.
- Then the filter: replaced where there is a workable one, cleared where there is not.
- Fresh diesel goes in, then your system is primed.
- The start. With fresh diesel in and the fuel system bled, it's fired up and checked to be sure it runs correctly.
Only when it is running on clean diesel do our technicians leave. It's very uncommon for a vehicle caught early to be left with lasting damage, and normal driving starts again straight away.
After your fuel drain: back on the road around Esgyryn
- Drive normally. There is nothing unusual to do after it's been started on fresh fuel.
- Pull over and ring us back if anything seems wrong early on — a light on the dash, smoke from the exhaust, an idle that runs rough, or a throttle with a dead spot.
- The work may come up later with a hire company, an insurer or a fleet manager. Keep the documents.
- Next time, read the pump. The label, not the colour of its handle.
