Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Euxton? Don't Start It

If you have not turned on the motor yet, do not. A fuel drain and nothing more is nearly always what a car requires while the fuel is still inside the tank and the engine has not been started, which is why it is the coming few minutes that count, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel travels to your car wherever it has come to rest in Euxton or the rest of Lancashire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, and drains and flushes it there. Our engineers can tell you what the following stage is. Contact us — this happens ahead of everything else.

The next five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • Never fire it up — and don't trust it if it starts. Here is the part people get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol engine given diesel typically just will not run, so the person stops and the damage stops with them. A diesel filled with petrol usually starts, ticks over and drives off without complaint for several miles. It isn't fine. It is grinding that fuel system as you drive.
  • Switching the car's ignition on often primes your system, and priming is what moves petrol out of that tank then into the pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps oiled on its way through, before it burns. Petrol manages the burning and none of the lubricating. Leave your ignition off.
  • Topping up gets rid of nothing. It leaves you a larger tank of the same mix, since a diesel fuel system does not cope with petrol by percentage the way that guidance implies — so do not put diesel on top to water down it. Octane is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • We would sooner get to a tricky location than have it started — so if you sensibly can, sit tight. Nothing is simpler to deal with than a motor that hasn't shifted. On the verge on Wigan Road, that means hazards on then keep the car.
  • A van turning up rather than circling rests on two things: a postcode starting PR7 6, and whatever is next to you with a name on it. Have both ready before you dial.
  • Phone 0333 366 0103. Tell us what got in, about how much, and whether the car has started. These three details decide the full job.

The high-pressure pump did that morning drive running on a fluid that had shed a great deal of the protection it is made for. Diesel lubricates that pump, and your injectors with it, before any of your fuel combusts; petrol does the burning and none of the protecting. So picture a diesel Volkswagen Golf, fuelled at quarter past eight, driven in to work, and left standing outside Euxton Balshaw Lane until the penny drops somewhere around eleven. Three hours of standing have changed nothing about it. The couple of miles before that altered plenty, which is why the thing we ask you is about miles instead of hours. Phone. Keep it exactly where it is.

If you've put petrol in the diesel Dacia Duster in Euxton and you're now sat outside Spar with a boot loaded with shopping, phone. Don't start it once more to exit that spot. Our technicians will come out to you, empty that tank, clean the fuel lines then put clean diesel in so you can drive away. A mile or so at light throttle draws hardly any diesel, so such jobs are often the easy ones.

Nothing tells you, since from behind the wheel there is nothing to be warned about. Your diesel Peugeot 3008 will have felt perfectly ordinary on the way back from St. Mary's Catholic Primary School Euxton, and they all do — which is the snag with petrol in a diesel and not the reverse. Diesel in a petrol motor mostly refuses to run, stopping the motorist and stopping the damage with them. Petrol in a diesel starts, ticks over, moves off as though nothing had happened, and all the while the pump keeps working without the lubrication its fuel is supposed to supply. Tell us approximately how far, and how hard. The harder matters more.

Leave it there overnight. Phone us next morning. Nothing about a diesel Mercedes E-Class standing in the parking area at Bay Horse deteriorates whilst it waits, tank of petrol or not, and this job remains a straightforward one right up until the moment it gets driven home. The query we bring is about that drive there: a cold motor over a short run is where petrol combusts least well, and whatever fails to burn can get past the piston rings into the engine oil.

No warning exists for this, which is why vehicles in that position typically get driven a second time before somebody rings. Don't be one of them. The throttle went dead and the idle turned ragged after a few streets, and your diesel Citroen C4 Picasso is now sitting close to Euxton War Memorial. Softness there means fuel that cannot build pressure correctly instead of a motor packing up. Turn off. Ring us.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Euxton

On a forecourt: clearing petrol from the diesel

The work starts at a pump, mostly. Frequently the job ends at one too. We work on garage forecourts routinely, with the station's agreement, so if you're still at Tesco that's usually where the drain takes place.

The forecourt is the only spot the mistake is halted before your engine has run. Our engineers can still sort it out where it sits, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, your car has been fired up and moved there, and that drew fuel through the filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump, all the way from the tank. None of that is a catastrophe, although the flush then has to reach past your tank to the fuel lines and your filter, and the few seconds between checking the receipt and going for the keys are what settle that.

Attendants will usually chip in pushing it away from the pump, which lets the next driver get through. Welcome the offer. Firing it for four vehicle lengths? No.

Places our team cover around Euxton

As a village, Euxton gets a frequent call, whilst the places close by come along on the same trip: Runshaw Moor and Pincock, Worden and Bolton Green, Astley Village.

Not on the list? It says nothing. The names above are just the nearest few, and the majority of towns in Lancashire have a page of their own elsewhere on this site. Assuming is the habit to avoid, especially on a border or somewhere the satnav struggles. Phone and enquire.

See this map for the area shown here. Your vehicle doesn't need to travel to us. We operate throughout all of it — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Euxton: stuck where you stopped

A chance to pull in somewhere sensible does not come to everybody. Set off, then realised? Landed on the verge on Euxton Lane, or sat in some lay-by with your hazards on? That is a common call here. Not a rare one.

Out of your car when it is not wise to wait inside, by it if it is. It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that is the problem: restart the vehicle to reach somewhere handier and the mixture goes further into your fuel system with every mile driven. We'll bring our van to a difficult location without any trouble, and for the car that's far better than carrying on.

So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel over a few miles

The M6 is the road which matters now, and it sits under a mile from Euxton. It will frequently get you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it is smoke, a rough idle and power falling away — not a clean stop. Misfilled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Pull off at the first sensible exit, turn off, and don't restart the vehicle to reposition. It alters what our engineers bring, so mention it when you call: on a longer run — anything close to the under 10 miles to the closest city — take it the contamination has been through your filter, your pump and the injectors.

Where is Euxton?

Euxton is a village in Lancashire, situated on the banks of a river at an elevation of around 52 metres, with nearby areas including Runshaw Moor and Pincock. Euxton lies approximately 6 miles south west of Preston and is characterised by its semi-detached housing stock. Euxton has a population of around 3349 people and is located near to Worden. Euxton is some 183 miles north west of London.

What comes next when our engineers get to you around Euxton

  • We ask first, price after. What was put in? How much? Has your motor run? Those responses shape what the work actually is.
  • Our technicians clear the tank of the contaminated fuel.
  • Fuel lines are rinsed through and the filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the system that caused any of this.
  • Bleeding your system follows, once clean diesel is in.
  • When it's started, our technicians check it runs correctly on new diesel.

After that it's ready to drive away. We do everything wherever your car has stopped, which means it never has to go to a workshop, and if it has been spotted early, it's very rare for there to be long-term damage.

A distinct job: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Euxton

If what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the first instruction is the same — do not fire it up — yet this issue is not. Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and strips out the lubrication the fuel system relies on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with the diesel and you get rust instead, plus deposits.

Both are ours. There's a separate Euxton page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost around Euxton

What moves the figure is laid out below, as this job is not one job and our technicians can't truthfully put a single figure on this page.

  • Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, against how much the tank holds.
  • Whether it is unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where your car is, and whether our van can safely reach and work on it.

Tell us what your car is, how much got in, and if the motor has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range. Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is ideal for that.

Petrol in diesel queries from Euxton motorists

Fuel drains on a Euxton petrol station forecourt

Plenty of what our technicians do gets done nowhere else. So yes. Regularly, provided the site agrees: EG On the Move, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether we can work in that spot is something our engineers answer on the spot.

A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Litres aren't the measure. Proportion is, and much more than either, it matters if anything has been run. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is needed is if that blend has been drawn through the system.

Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? Now what?

Stop somewhere sensible, switch off, and leave it off. Driving moves the problem along — out of that tank, into the pump and injectors. People fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one genuinely useful thing left to you isn't restarting the car.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

No. Carried out properly, emptying and flushing is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. Another reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a separate fault and it does not replace what petrol has thinned. Your tank still has petrol in it later, and the pump still has to cope with it.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Wherever the vehicle is, our technicians drain and flush it there, so a drive to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

Waiting next to it?

Never turn the engine back on.

If you have already driven the vehicle, pull over somewhere sensible, switch it off then keep it off. Cold, parked, going nowhere: that is the best place to be in. Motorists fear this much more than they need to.

At the roadside, on the forecourt or at home — mobile fuel draining in Euxton and throughout Lancashire.
