Ewanrigg: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?
Never fire up the motor. While the fuel is still inside your tank and the engine has not turned over, a fuel drain is almost always all it takes — and that's decided in the coming few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled cars where they are, all over Ewanrigg and the rest of Cumbria, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway. Ring us and our technicians will tell you what happens from here before you do any more.
The next five minutes: petrol in a diesel
- Do not start the car — and do not trust it when it fires up. This is the part motorists have wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol motor filled with diesel generally just will not run, and so the driver stops and the harm stops with them. A diesel given petrol normally starts, ticks over and drives away quite happily for several miles. It isn't all right. It's wearing the fuel system as you drive.
- Switching your ignition on usually primes the system, and priming is what moves petrol out of your tank and into your pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps greased on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol does the burning and none of the lubricating. Leave the car's ignition off.
- Topping up clears nothing. It gives you a fuller tank of the same mixture, because a diesel fuel system does not tolerate petrol by percentage as that advice suggests — so don't put diesel on top to dilute it. Type is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.
- A motor that has not shifted is the quickest one to deal with, so stay where you are if you sensibly can. Pulled up on the verge on Festival crescent? Hazards on, and leave the vehicle there. A tricky spot works for us better than a started engine.
- A van turning up instead of circling hinges on two things: a postcode starting CA15 8, and whatever is next to you with a label on it. Keep both ready before you phone.
- Three replies decide the whole call-out: the fuel you tipped in, the ballpark quantity of it, plus whether it has been running since. The number is 0333 366 0103.
Can petrol be taken from your diesel at the forecourt?
A big share of the work is finished at the pump, as that's where it mostly begins. The drain generally gets done there and then. Still on the forecourt at Shell? Given the owner's permission, that is somewhere we work, and often.
Before your engine has run — a forecourt is the one setting it ends up caught. Anywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — your car was fired up and moved to get there, which means fuel was sucked from the tank, through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That is not a disaster, and we can still deal with it where it stands. It does mean the lines and your filter need cleaning as well as the tank, and that is determined by the few seconds between reading your receipt and going for the key.
The staff will usually help you wheel the car away from the pump so the next customer can get past. It is worth doing. Starting the car to roll four car lengths is not.
Petrol in the Peugeot 308, and it takes diesel? Shopping in your boot, you outside Lidl, somewhere around Ewanrigg? Then call us, and leave your engine out of that — not even to leave that spot. A technician comes out to you. Tank drained, fuel lines cleaned, fresh diesel in, and home you go. Light throttle over a mile uses hardly anything, and so these are usually the simple ones.
Park it overnight. Call us next morning. Nothing about a diesel BMW 1 Series standing in the parking area at Swan Inn degrades whilst it waits, tank of petrol or not, and the job remains a simple one right up until the moment it gets taken home. The question our technicians bring is about the trip there: a cold engine over a short distance is where petrol ignites least well, and whatever fails to burn can get past the rings into the sump.
The pump is not turning, and so whatever your diesel Vauxhall Astra did on the way to Maryport (Millennium Green), none of it is happening now. Nothing gets worse whilst it waits. Take your time over this — but never drive the vehicle home to buy any.
Leave the Volkswagen Touran near Elenborough Methodist and phone us. We're blunt about not driving on because a worn pump gives off, and what it sheds moves onward with your fuel to the injectors beyond it.
Most of these happen somewhere new, and the cause is mechanical instead of sloppy — practically no resistance meets a smaller petrol nozzle entering a current diesel filler neck. Two days into a diesel Audi Q5, a fill-up by All Souls' Church that you did not think about? Call us from where you are. Courtesy and hire cars go further before anybody clocks it, and the further they go, the more petrol winds up at the injectors.
Areas our team reach around Ewanrigg
These same trips bring us to Ellenborough, Netherton, Maryport, Glasson and Kirkborough besides Ewanrigg, which is a residential suburb.
If yours is not on this list it does not mean we don't come — there are pages for most places in Cumbria, and the ones named above are merely the immediate neighbours. Ring us to enquire rather than guessing — borders above all, and wherever your satnav tends to misread.
That map marks the ground this page includes. Roadside, forecourt, private drive, car park: the lot is territory our engineers serve, and none of that needs the car to move to us.
Ewanrigg: broken down where you parked
Some people find no safe place to pull over whatsoever. Set off, then twigged? Finished up on the verge beside Melbreak Avenue, or sat in some lay-by with the hazard lights going? That is a common call here. Not a rare one.
Fine there? Remain by it. Not okay? Climb out and clear of it. It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that is the trouble: fire it up to get to somewhere safer and the mixture goes further into the system with every mile driven. A technician driving to an awkward spot is no trouble for us, and it is much better for the vehicle than pressing on.
Already run it? Petrol in a diesel over some miles
The local M6 is the one which counts here, and sits under 50 miles from Ewanrigg. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will often do both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is seldom a clean stop. Power falls away, the idle gets uneven, and there may be some smoke.
Take the next exit that is sensible, pull up there, and never restart the car to reposition. Suppose the worst of it on a long trip. Anything close to the under 50 miles to the closest city, and the petrol has been through your filter, through the pump, through your injectors. Mention it when you ring. What we bring differs.
A bit about Ewanrigg
Ewanrigg is a suburban area located on the coast of Cumbria, with an elevation of 33 metres above sea level. Ewanrigg sits near the towns of Maryport and Ellenborough, and is characterized by its predominantly semi-detached housing stock. Ewanrigg is situated approximately 25 miles from Carlisle, the nearest city, and is part of the larger residential area surrounding Maryport.
What our technicians do when our engineers arrive with you around Ewanrigg
- Three things get established before any price — your fuel that went in, the quantity, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.
- Out comes the tainted fuel.
- What is left in the fuel system should not be what started the trouble, and so your fuel lines get rinsed and the fuel filter cleared.
- The system gets primed, on new diesel.
- It's run with fresh diesel in it, and our engineers check that it's running smoothly.
Then it's ready to set off. Our technicians do all of this wherever the vehicle has stopped, which means it never needs to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been spotted quickly, it's very uncommon for there to be permanent damage.
A different matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Ewanrigg
The problem isn't the same, though the first rule is — never crank it — if what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Petrol weakens the diesel and takes away the protection the system depends on. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings corrosion and build-up.
AdBlue removal around Ewanrigg has a page of its own with the details on it, including why it is often the more serious of the two. We handle both.
Ewanrigg costs for a petrol-in-diesel drain
What shifts the figure is set out below, since the job isn't one job and our technicians can't truthfully put a single figure on this page.
- Whether your engine has been run or driven. This is the big one.
- Wrong fuel in, against what the tank holds — that proportion.
- The kind of liquid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
- Where is it? And can a technician reach it and work there safely?
Tell us your vehicle, the amount and if it has run, and you'll get a firm answer instead of a range. If it is not urgent — the car is at home and going nowhere — works too.
Petrol in diesel: everyday queries around Ewanrigg
Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Ewanrigg?
Much of what our engineers do happens nowhere else. So yes. Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Essex Garage is somewhere we're regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you will hear if working there's possible.
Is there a sensible amount of petrol in a diesel?
It rests on the ratio instead of the litres, and a lot more on whether the engine has run. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different scenarios, of course. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is whether your fuel system has had that blend drawn through it.
I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?
Stop somewhere safe, turn off, then keep the car off. Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does move the problem out of that tank then into the pump and injectors, yes, and it remains recoverable far more regularly than motorists assume.
My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?
A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain and flush done to a correct standard, which is no alteration at all. An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.
Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?
Two-stroke oil solves a separate problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No. Petrol stays in that tank later, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no respite from it.
A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?
There is no need to take it to a franchised dealer, since we drain and flush your car wherever it is.
Waiting next to it?
Shut off is the way it remains.
If you have already driven it, stop somewhere sensible, turn it off and leave it off. A parked, cold car is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from much more frequently than drivers fear.
