Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Eynesbury? Don't Start It

Don't turn on your engine. While the petrol is still inside the tank and your engine has not turned over, a fuel drain is almost always all it requires — and that's settled in the next few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled cars where they stand, all over Eynesbury and the remainder of Cambridgeshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive. Our engineers shall tell you what the next part is. Contact us — this happens ahead of all else.

Petrol in a diesel: what to try next

  • Do not fire it up — and do not believe it when it does start. This is the part drivers have wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol engine filled with diesel generally just cannot run, so the driver stops and the harm ends with them. A diesel filled with petrol usually starts, idles and moves off without complaint for several miles. It's not okay. It is wearing out the fuel system whenever you drive.
  • Diesel combusts, and before it burns it greases — that high-pressure pump, its injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave the ignition be as well: switching it on is often all it takes to prime that system, and priming draws petrol from your tank into just those parts.
  • Topping up gets rid of nothing. It hands you a fuller tank of the same mixture, since a diesel fuel system does not tolerate petrol by percentage the way that guidance presumes — so don't put diesel on top to thin it. Octane is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • Stay still if it's sensible to. Hazards on, ignition off, keep it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Cromwell Road, anywhere — an odd location for us trumps a started engine, and nothing is easier for us to handle than a vehicle that never moved.
  • Get your whereabouts prepared before you call. A postcode that starts PE19 2 and whatever is closest to you with a label on it is the difference between the van turning up and our van circling.
  • What was put in, approximately how many litres, and also whether the car has fired — these three details determine the whole job. Dial 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Petrol in a diesel Volkswagen Golf, sitting at St Neots since this morning? The wait has cost you nothing — fuel sitting in a tank is inert. It was the journey in that drew weakened diesel through your pump. Ring us before you fetch it.

Car parks like the one outside Tesco Extra are a place our technicians visit all the time, and the fuel is seldom the difficult part. That bay is: motors either side, a trolley shelter behind, sometimes a height bar on the way in that decides whether our van can get to you at all. So tell us how boxed in you are when you phone, and which way the vehicle is facing. If we cannot work alongside your diesel Renault Megane we'll roll it without running it — and that is not fussiness about a few seconds of running. Each start primes your fuel system and draws more of that blend out of that tank and on to the pump, and so a car moved twice into a roomier spot has gradually become a harder job than one left just where it stopped.

Never chance it. The drive home from The Cambridgeshire Hunter is entirely possible, which is precisely the issue — a weakened tank doesn't stop a diesel starting or pulling away, it just grinds the parts your fuel is meant to protect. Phone us, and let the Mercedes C-Class stay where it is.

Hire car or company car? Ring them before you call us — some contracts want the hire firm to approve the work, and sorting that out first is a great deal faster than sorting it later on. Then ring us about the BMW 5 Series near C.F. Tebbutt, and do not worry that you can't say how full your tank was. Almost no one can, in a motor they picked up two days ago, and our engineers work it out on the spot. The reason we ask is that petrol in a diesel does its damage as a proportion: the same few litres in a nearly empty tank is a far stronger blend than in a full one. Petrol is rated on how well it resists igniting under pressure, which is the opposite of what a diesel needs — so the stronger the mix, the more it knocks, smokes and goes flat.

That sluggishness is the fuel failing to build pressure fully, not your engine giving up — and with no warning light for it, vehicles in that position generally get driven a second time before anyone rings. Don't. A couple of streets is all it got: throttle gone soft, idle turned ragged, and a diesel Vauxhall Astra now resting near Eynesbury sign. Switch it off and ring us.

At a forecourt: draining petrol from your diesel

It kicks off at the pump, mostly. Quite often the work ends on site too. If you are still at the forecourt at Tesco, that is generally where the drain happens — we work on petrol station forecourts all the time, with the station's consent.

Nowhere else other than a garage can it be stopped with your engine still unrun. The few seconds between reading your receipt and reaching for the key determine how much needs flushing. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the car was fired up and moved to get there, so fuel was pulled from that tank, through the fuel filter then into your high-pressure pump. That means the fuel lines and the filter need rinsing as well as that tank. It's not a disaster, and our technicians can still put it right where the car stands.

The attendants will normally help you wheel the vehicle out from the pump so the next customer can get past. That's worth doing. Cranking the car just to shift four vehicle lengths is not.

Coverage in Eynesbury

St Neots, Eaton Socon, Eaton Ford, Little Barford, Islands Common — each of them on the runs that bring us out to Eynesbury itself, a residential suburb.

If yours is not on that list that does not mean we never come — there are dedicated pages for nearly all locations across Cambridgeshire, and the ones mentioned above are just the nearest neighbours. Close to the border, or anywhere your phone can't find? Call us to ask instead of presuming.

The ground the page covers is on the map. We work roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and at car parks throughout all of that, and your vehicle never needs to come to us.

Stopped on the kerbside somewhere around Eynesbury?

Not everybody has a chance to stop somewhere suitable. Set off, then twigged? Finished up along the verge on Bodiam Way, or parked in some lay-by with the hazards going? That is a common call here. Not a rare one.

Okay where you are? Stay by it. Not fine? Get out and clear of it. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags the blend further into the fuel system — and oblige it usually will, which is why your motor does not get restarted to limp somewhere better. Our van coming to a tricky place is no problem for us, and it's much better for the vehicle than driving on.

Some miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?

Here is where the A1(M) comes in, under 10 miles away from Eynesbury. A loss of power, a lumpy idle, some smoke: those are the symptoms when they appear, rather than a neat stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will usually get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.

Come off at the next sensible exit, switch off, and don't start the vehicle to reposition. On a longer drive — anything near the under 25 miles to the nearest city — assume the contamination has been through the fuel filter, your pump and your injectors, and say so when you phone. It changes what we bring.

Where's Eynesbury?

Eynesbury is a suburban area located on the riverside in Cambridgeshire, with a relatively low elevation of 17 metres. Eynesbury sits near the city of Cambridge, approximately 16 miles to the northwest, and is also close to the towns of St Neots, Eaton Socon, and Eaton Ford. Eynesbury has a population of around 6784 people, predominantly living in semi-detached housing. Eynesbury is situated about 49 miles north of London, making it a commuter-friendly location.

What happens when our technicians reach you in Eynesbury

  • The responses alter the work, which is why our engineers ask before pricing: what was put in, how much of that, and if your engine has run.
  • That tank is cleared of everything.
  • Lines flushed, filter cleared. Whatever is left later on is not the thing that created the problem.
  • Your system gets primed, on clean diesel.
  • It's fired up with clean diesel in it, and our engineers make sure that it is running correctly.

Your car is then ready for you to drive away. There's no need for a workshop at any point, because the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it's spotted early, lasting damage is very rare.

Eynesbury AdBlue removal is a distinct matter

The problem isn't the same, though the first step is — never fire it up — if what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Thinned diesel, and no lubrication left for the fuel system that depends on it. That is petrol. Rust and deposits are what a diesel tank gets instead, as AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Frequently the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the full story lives on its own Eynesbury page. Both are ours to deal with.

What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost around Eynesbury

What shifts the price is set out below, as the job is not one job and our engineers can't truthfully put a single price on this page.

  • This is the big one: whether the motor has been started, or driven.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, measured against how much the tank takes.
  • Whether it is petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can a technician get to it and work there sensibly?

Tell us what your car is, how much got in, and if your motor has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range. If it isn't time-critical — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Petrol in diesel: everyday queries around Eynesbury

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Eynesbury?

A fair part of this work takes place there, so yes. Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Total is somewhere we're regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you will hear whether working there is possible.

A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Whether your engine has run matters a lot more, though the proportion matters too, rather than the litres. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate situations, of course. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is if the system has had that mix drawn through it.

Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What now?

Switch off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop. It is recoverable much more regularly than people fear, even though driving is what shifts the problem from that tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain then flush done to a correct standard, which is no change at all. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one, which is another reason to leave the car switched off.

Two-stroke oil in the tank, and then home?

Two-stroke oil solves a separate problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol thinned. No. Later? Still petrol in that tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Wherever the vehicle is, our technicians drain and flush it there, so a visit to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

Standing next to it?

Do not switch the engine back on.

If you have already driven it, stop somewhere safe, turn it off then leave it off. This is recoverable from a lot more commonly than drivers fear, and a stationary, cold vehicle is the best position to be in.
