Petrol in a Diesel Car in Fairmile: What Happens Now

Stop. Engine off. Keep it that way — no moment on, no shifting it at all. Emptied then purged, just where it is: that's normally all an unrun diesel with petrol in it takes. Whether it remains that straightforward depends on the minutes to come far more than on everything else. Here is the order of things from here, anywhere you're around Fairmile.

Petrol in a diesel? What to do in minute one

Work through these in order, first.

  • Keys out of the ignition. Turning the ignition on can be all it takes to prime the system, and priming draws petrol out of the tank toward the parts it harms. Keep the car off completely.
  • Don't top it up with diesel. Adding diesel takes out nothing. You are left with a bigger tank of the same mixture.
  • Hazards on. If you're anywhere near moving traffic, make the vehicle simple to see before you do anything else.
  • Off the petrol pump by hand. On a forecourt, ask the staff to help you push it clear of the petrol pump. Don't fire it up to shift it, however short the distance.
  • Hold on to the receipt. It shows which fuel got in and about how much, which is the first thing we'll ask.

Still on the move when you realised? Come off the M27 at the next exit if that is where you are, under 15 miles from Fairmile, and pull over somewhere safe rather than pressing on to the services. Then start at stage one.

Every Fairmile fuel drain starts here: has your engine run?

What comes after this turns on one answer, and only one.

Motor not run at all?

  • Just your tank has petrol in it for now.
  • The job is a simple drain and a flush, normally done where the vehicle is.
  • This, here, is the best place to be in, and the whole reason step one matters.

Engine run, even briefly?

  • Some petrol has left that tank by now, passed through your filter, and reached your lines.
  • The high-pressure fuel pump as well as your injectors see it too on a bigger run.
  • The job grows with the distance — lines cleaned, filter dealt with, sometimes more.

The reason the line falls there: diesel protects your high-pressure pump as well as the fuel injectors as it flows through them, and petrol does not. In your tank, left alone, petrol harms nothing. The parts that move it are wearing the moment petrol is being pumped.

Fuel drain of a diesel car in Fairmile, step by step

Before you call about petrol in a diesel in Fairmile: what our technicians need

Whether the van goes round or finds you comes down to a little preparation.

  • Where you have stopped. A postcode beginning BH23 2 is the best start.
  • Wherever you have pulled up, the road's name helps — whether that is Fairmile Road or somewhere else — and so does the name of a car park.
  • Or the nearest landmark. A car park is easier to find by what it serves, such as the one at Lidl.
  • That it's a diesel, along with the make and model of the car.
  • Petrol or AdBlue? Say which. They are different jobs, and AdBlue has a separate Fairmile page.
  • About how much — in litres from your receipt, or by how long the nozzle was in.
  • Has it run? If so, tell us how far it got, and how it was driven.
  • The owner may have to authorise the work under some hire or company contracts — so it is quicker to settle whose car it is before we get there.

Then ring 0333 366 0103. If it can wait — the car is at home with going nowhere — works as well.

Fairmile fuel drain on its way? Whilst you wait

Help, however well meant, is the thing that does the damage whilst you wait. So stick to these.

  • Safety before the car. If it has stopped somewhere dangerous, get yourself clear of the traffic then wait away from it. If it is safe where it is, stay with it.
  • Not to roll it a few yards, not to check it is all right, not for a passer-by's kindness: nobody starts it.
  • None of that gets the petrol back out — not two-stroke oil, not injector cleaner, not something from the boot. So no additives.
  • No DIY clearing. Siphoning petrol into a can by the kerbside is hazardous, and it leaves your fuel that has already gone beyond the tank.
  • Not for the radio, not for the windows: your ignition remains off.

When our van gets there: the fuel drain, step by step

  • First, three queries: which fuel was put in, the quantity, and has it run? Those answers set this job, so the quote follows them.
  • Clearing it is how that mixture gets taken out of the tank.
  • Petrol that has shifted beyond your tank sits in your lines if it ran, and your lines are flushed to shift it.
  • Cleared, or replaced if the car has a serviceable one: your filter is dealt with next.
  • Bleeding your system comes after clean diesel is in.
  • The first start on clean diesel. Once bleeding is complete, the motor is fired up and our technicians make sure that it runs correctly.

Until it runs on new diesel, our technicians remain with it. Permanent damage is very unusual when it has been noticed early, so the car can go straight back to normal driving.

Fairmile, after the fuel drain: back on the road

  • Once it has been started on fresh fuel, there is nothing unusual to do: drive normally.
  • Watch the first miles. A warning light, smoke, a lumpy idle or a flat spot under the throttle means pull over then ring us back.
  • The paperwork covers the question a rental company, fleet manager or insurer may ask: what work was carried out. File it.
  • Next time, go by the petrol pump's label instead of the colour of its handle.
