Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Fairview? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled cars where they stand, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, all over Fairview and the remainder of Lancashire. The very first thing to do is not to turn on your engine. When your engine has not run and the petrol is still inside your tank, a fuel drain is nearly always all it takes, and the following few minutes settle that, not how much went in. We will explain what your next move is. Contact us — that goes ahead of anything else.

Your next five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • Never crank it — and never trust it when it runs. This is the thing most people get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol engine fed diesel typically just won't run, so the motorist stops and the damage stops with them. A diesel fed petrol generally starts, ticks over and drives off without complaint for several miles. It isn't okay. It is eating into that fuel system whenever you drive.
  • Two jobs, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps the high-pressure pump and injectors lubricated. Petrol only manages the one. Which is why your ignition remains off too — switch it on and you frequently prime the system, and that is petrol leaving your tank for just those components.
  • Don't weaken it. Diesel added on top clears nothing, and so all you get is more of what was already there, because percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system handles petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The grade makes no difference.
  • Stay still if it's sensible to. Hazards on, engine off, keep the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on York Place, anywhere — an odd location for us is better than a started engine, and nothing is simpler for us to deal with than a motor that never shifted.
  • The van showing up rather than circling rests on two things: a postcode that starts PR6 9, and whatever is next to you with a sign on it. Have both prepared before you phone.
  • Three facts determine the full visit: the liquid you poured in, the ballpark quantity of it, plus if it has been running since. The number is 0333 366 0103.

Your high-pressure pump did that morning drive running on a fuel that had shed a lot of the protection it is built around. Diesel protects that pump, and your injectors with it, before any of the fuel ignites; petrol does the burning and none of the protecting. So picture a diesel Renault Megane, filled at quarter past eight, driven in to work, and parked standing at Adlington (Lancashire) until it dawns on you somewhere around eleven. Three hours of sitting have altered nothing about it. The couple of miles before that did plenty, which is why the question we ask you is about miles not hours. Call us. Leave the vehicle precisely where it stands.

If you've put petrol in your diesel Volkswagen Passat in Fairview and you are now sat at Spar with a boot loaded with shopping, ring us. Don't crank it again to get out of the spot. We'll come to you, clear that tank, flush those fuel lines then put fresh diesel in so you can get home. A mile or so at gentle throttle pulls hardly any diesel, which is why those are usually the straightforward ones.

A diesel pump meters fuel on demand, and a rushed morning drive asks for plenty — so three miles in your Mercedes C-Class sounds like nothing and is not. Twenty to nine outside Anderton Primary School, running late, a receipt in your hand showing unleaded: hazards on, motor off, phone.

Pull over somewhere sensible, switch off and phone us. Normal on the way out to King George's Field, gutless on the way back? Then look at your tank. Petrol thins diesel; weaker fuel slips past the close-fitting components that build injection pressure; and the further the diesel Ford Kuga travelled, the less of that pressure it held.

A car you picked up two days ago gets driven further before anybody sees anything, which is the hire and courtesy issue in one sentence — and how far it went is what determines the volume of petrol getting to your injectors. Nothing slapdash about the mistake itself: a newer diesel filler neck accepts the narrower petrol nozzle with almost no resistance, so unfamiliar locations see most of these. Phone us from wherever you are, near Fairview Youth & Community Centre or not, and we will head to the Kia Sportage.

At a forecourt: removing petrol from a diesel

It kicks off at a forecourt, mostly. Quite often it finishes on site as well. Still at Essar? Then that is normally where it takes place. Station forecourts are everyday for us, with the agreement of the station.

No place but a forecourt can the mistake be stopped with your engine still unstarted. Everywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — your car was started and driven to get there, which means fuel was sucked from that tank, through the filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That's not a disaster, and we can still put it right where it sits. It does mean your lines and the filter need flushing as well as your tank, and that is decided by the few seconds between checking the receipt and reaching for the keys.

Attendants will usually chip in pushing it clear of the pump, which lets the next motorist get through. Accept the offer. Shifting the car four bays doesn't merit starting the motor.

Places our vans cover in Fairview

Adlington, Anderton, Grimeford Village, Heath Charnock, Rivington — all of these on our trips that carry us across to Fairview as well, a residential suburb.

If yours is not on the list it doesn't mean we never come — there are separate pages for nearly all locations across Lancashire, and the ones mentioned above are just the closest neighbours. Contact us and ask instead of presuming, especially when you are on the boundary or anywhere your phone can't find.

That map shows the patch this page includes. The lot is territory we work: a kerbside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You don't drive the vehicle anywhere.

Stopped at the kerb somewhere around Fairview?

Not everybody finds a decent place to pull in. A common call for us instead of an odd one: noticed after setting off, landed by the verge on The Avenue or in a lay-by with your hazards flashing.

Remain beside the vehicle when it is wise to be there, and clear of the vehicle when it's not. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls that mixture further into your fuel system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why your motor doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere better. However tricky the spot, it's no trouble for us to come to it, and that's far better for your car than carrying on.

Driven it already? Stop, and read this

Here is where your M61 comes into it — under a mile away from Fairview. A misfilled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong, and the signs when they come are generally lost power, an uneven idle and smoke rather than a clean stop.

Come off at the first sensible exit, switch off, and do not restart the vehicle to move it. Suppose the worst of that on a long trip. Anything near the under 15 miles to the closest city, and the contamination has been through your filter, through the pump, through the fuel injectors. Tell us when you phone. What our technicians bring changes.

Where is Fairview?

Fairview is a suburban area in Lancashire, situated on the riverside with an elevation of 119 metres, and is located approximately 10.5 miles from Preston. Fairview has a population of around 5046 people and predominantly features semi-detached housing. Fairview is part of the wider North West region, with nearby places including Adlington, Anderton, and Grimeford Village. Fairview is also relatively distant from London, at around 179.1 miles away.

What our technicians do when we arrive with you in Fairview

  • Our technicians ask first, quote after. What got in? How much? Has your motor run? Those responses change what the work actually is.
  • Your tank gets emptied of it.
  • What is remaining in the fuel system should not be what caused the problem, and so your fuel lines get rinsed and the fuel filter cleaned.
  • We pour clean diesel in and bleed the system.
  • The engine is turned on and checked to make sure it runs properly on new diesel.

From that point, you're ready to pull away. There is no need for a workshop at any point, because the work is all done where your car is, and when it is noticed soon, long-term damage is very rare.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Fairview is a different problem

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the opening step is unchanged — the motor stays off — whereas the issue under it's a different one altogether. The lubrication a fuel system relies on is taken away by petrol, which thins your diesel. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus residue.

AdBlue removal around Fairview has a page of its own with the details on it, including why it is often the more serious of the two. We cover both.

What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost in Fairview

What shifts the figure is set out below, since the job is not one job and our technicians cannot truthfully put a single figure on this page.

  • Whether your engine has been started or driven. This is the main one.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
  • AdBlue or petrol, whichever was put in.
  • Where the car is, and if a technician can safely get to and work on it.

The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight and not as a range. Not time-critical, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

Questions we get about petrol in diesel in Fairview

Fuel drains on a Fairview petrol station forecourt

Plenty of what our technicians do gets done nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you are at when you phone and we will tell you whether we can work there. With the site's consent our engineers attend BP and the other forecourts around town regularly.

Is there a sensible amount of petrol in a diesel?

Ratio decides it instead of litres — and more than either, whether the engine has run. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a different matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is needed is whether that blend has been sucked through the system.

I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Turn off somewhere sensible, and keep it that way after you stop. Driving shifts the problem along — out of the tank, into the pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one truly valuable thing left to you is not restarting it.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain then flush done to a good standard, which is no change at all. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one, which is another good reason to leave the car switched off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a separate fault and it doesn't put back what petrol has diluted. Your tank still has petrol in it later on, and the pump still has to cope with it.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

You do not need one. The vehicle is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a dealership.

You, and the vehicle, still together?

Leave the car switched off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, switch off, and no restarting it afterwards. This is recoverable from far more frequently than motorists expect, and a parked, cold vehicle is the best place to be in.
