Petrol in a Diesel Car in Fant: What Happens Now
Stop, and keep the engine off — not on, and not for a second to shift the car. Cleared and rinsed, just where it sits: that's usually all an unrun diesel with petrol in it needs. Whether it stays that simple depends on the minutes to come more than on anything else. Here is the sequence of things from now, anywhere you are in Fant.
Petrol in a diesel, motor off — the first minute
Before anything else, the following — in this sequence.
- The ignition off, keys out. Turned on, your ignition can prime the system — and priming is what draws petrol out of the tank towards the parts it damages.
- Don't top it up with diesel. Adding diesel removes nothing. You end up with a bigger tank of the same mixture.
- Being seen comes before the rest near moving traffic: switch the hazards on, and only then deal with anything else.
- By hand, not under your engine: that's how it leaves the petrol pump. Get the forecourt staff to help you push, however short the distance.
- Hold on to your receipt: the fuel and the rough amount are printed on it, and they're what we ask for first.
Still driving when you noticed? Come off the M20 at the next junction if that's where you are, under 3 miles from Fant, and stop somewhere safe instead of pushing on to the services. Then start at step one.
Fant fuel drain: has your motor run yet, or not?
One answer is what everything after this stage depends on.
If it has never been started:
- Just that tank has petrol in it for now.
- The work is a drain and a flush, usually done where your car stands.
- No spot is better, and it is why the first step matters so much.
Engine run, however briefly?
- Petrol has been drawn out of the tank, past the fuel filter then into the lines.
- Run it further and that petrol gets to the injectors, having gone through the fuel pump first.
- Lines flushed, the filter seen to, occasionally more: this job grows as the distance does.
Petrol doesn't lubricate. Diesel does, protecting the pump and injectors as it passes through, which is why the line falls where it does. In your tank, left alone, petrol harms nothing. The parts that shift it are grinding the moment petrol is being pumped.
Fant, petrol in a diesel: have these prepared before you call
Prepare a little, and the technician finds you rather than circling.
- Where you are. A postcode beginning ME16 8 is the ideal start.
- The street or the car park. A road name is a help — Oakwood Road, or wherever you have stopped.
- Describe a car park by what it serves — the one at Spar, for example — and it is much quicker to find.
- The vehicle. Make, model, plus that it's a diesel.
- Petrol or AdBlue? Say which. They are different jobs, and AdBlue has a separate Fant page.
- How long the nozzle was in, or the litres from your receipt — either gives us how much.
- Whether it's run. And if it has, how far and how heavily.
- The owner may have to approve this work under some hire and company agreements — which is why it is faster to settle whose vehicle it is before we get there.
Next, 0333 366 0103. Not pressing, the vehicle left at home with nowhere to be? Then works too.
Whilst you wait for a fuel drain in Fant
Hold to these: kindly meant help does the damage during the wait.
- Your safety comes before the car. Somewhere dangerous? Get clear of the traffic then wait away from it. Fine where it stands? Stay with it.
- Not to roll it a few yards, not to check it is all right, not for a passer-by's kindness: no one starts it.
- Anything from your boot, oil meant for two-strokes or injector cleaner: no additive lifts that petrol.
- A DIY drain misses the fuel already gone beyond the tank, and siphoning petrol by the road is dangerous too.
- Ignition remains off. Even for your radio or your windows.
When our van arrives: your fuel drain, step by step
- Our quote comes after three questions, not before them — what got in, how much, and whether it's run — since those replies decide the job.
- The tank is emptied. The tainted mix comes out of the tank.
- If it ran, your lines are carrying petrol that has shifted beyond that tank — so they are cleaned.
- Where the vehicle has a workable filter, it is replaced; otherwise, cleared.
- Priming comes once fresh diesel is in.
- The first start on fresh diesel. When priming is finished, the motor is started and our technicians check that it runs correctly.
Our engineers stay until it is running on new diesel. It's very rare for a vehicle noticed early to be left with lasting damage, and normal driving starts again straight away.
Fant, after your fuel drain: back on the road
- Drive normally. There's nothing special to do once it has been started on fresh fuel.
- Watch the first miles. A warning light, smoke, a lumpy idle or a flat spot under the throttle means pull over and ring us back.
- The documents answers the question a rental company, fleet manager or insurer may ask: what work was carried out. File it.
- Next time, read the petrol pump. The label, not the colour of the handle.
