Farnborough Street: Petrol in a Diesel Car? Here Is What Happens
Stop. Engine off. Leave it that way — no moment on, no shifting it anywhere. Cleared then purged, just where it is: that is usually all an unrun diesel with petrol in it needs. Whether it stays that straightforward rests on the minutes ahead far more than on anything else. Here's the order of things from here, wherever you are around Farnborough Street.
Petrol in a diesel, motor off — the first minute
Work through the following in sequence, before you do anything else.
- The keys out of the ignition. Switching your ignition on can be all it takes to prime your fuel system, and priming draws petrol out of your tank toward the parts it damages. Leave the car off altogether.
- Topping up with diesel seems like it dilutes the trouble. It does not: nothing comes out, and the tank simply carries more of the same.
- Visibility comes first beside moving traffic: switch the hazards on, and only then deal with everything else.
- Off the pump by hand. On a forecourt, get the attendants to help you push it away from the pump. Don't crank it to shift it, however short the distance.
- Which fuel, and about how much? The receipt replies both, and that's where our first question starts. Don't throw it away.
Still driving when you noticed? Come off the M3 at the next junction if that's where you are, under 3 miles from Farnborough Street, and stop somewhere safe instead of pushing on to the services. Then begin at step one.
Farnborough Street fuel drain: has your motor run yet, or not?
From this point on, everything comes down to a single answer.
Motor not run at all?
- Nowhere but your tank: that is where that petrol yet is.
- The work is a simple drain and a flush, normally done where the car is.
- Step one counts for exactly this reason: it is the best spot to be in.
Motor run, even for a moment?
- Petrol has been drawn from your tank, past the filter and into the lines.
- Run it further and the petrol gets to your injectors, having passed through the fuel pump first.
- Flushing the lines, the filter dealt with, occasionally more: this job grows as the distance does.
The line falls there because diesel lubricates your high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors on its way through them — and petrol does not. A tank of petrol, left still, damages nothing. As soon as it's pumped, petrol starts grinding whatever moves it.
What to have ready when you call about petrol in a diesel from Farnborough Street
Prepare a little, and the van finds you rather than circling.
- Your location: a postcode starting GU14 7 serves best.
- The road or the car park. A road name is a help — Old Rectory Gardens, or wherever you have stopped.
- What a car park serves is the quickest way to find it, so mention the landmark — such as the one at Sainsbury's.
- The vehicle. Make, model, plus that it is a diesel.
- Tell us which was put in — petrol or AdBlue — since AdBlue is a different job, with a page of its own for Farnborough Street.
- How much. Litres from the receipt, or how long the nozzle was in the filler.
- If it's run, how far plus how hard — as well as whether it has run at all.
- The owner may have to authorise the work under some hire and company contracts — which is why it's quicker to settle whose car it is before our technicians get there.
Then ring 0333 366 0103. If it can wait — the vehicle is at home with going nowhere — works too.
Waiting for a fuel drain in Farnborough Street: what to do
Help, however well meant, is the thing that does the damage while you wait. So hold to these.
- Your safety comes before the vehicle. Somewhere exposed? Get away from the traffic and wait away from it. Fine where it sits? Stay with it.
- Not to roll it a couple of yards, not to check it is all right, not as a passer-by's kindness: no one starts it.
- No additives. Two-stroke oil, injector cleaner, anything from your boot — none of that gets the petrol back out.
- Siphoning petrol into a can at the kerbside is hazardous — and it also leaves whatever fuel has already gone beyond that tank. Don't drain the car yourself.
- Ignition remains off. Even for your radio or the windows.
Step by step: the fuel drain when our van arrives
- Three questions. What went in, how much, and if it's run. Those replies shape the job, which is why the price comes after them but not before.
- That tank is cleared. The tainted mix comes out of that tank.
- The fuel lines are rinsed. If it ran, the petrol has shifted beyond your tank, and the fuel lines are carrying it.
- Where the vehicle has a usable filter, it is swapped; if not, cleared.
- Clean diesel goes in, then the fuel system is primed.
- First start on clean diesel. Once priming is complete, the engine is started and our engineers check that it runs correctly.
Until it runs on fresh diesel, our technicians stay with it. When it has been noticed early, permanent damage is very uncommon, and the vehicle goes back to normal use at once.
After the fuel drain: back on the road around Farnborough Street
- After it's been started on fresh fuel, there is nothing special to do: drive normally.
- Keep an eye on the first miles. A warning light, smoke, a lumpy idle or a flat spot under the throttle means pull over then ring us back.
- The documents answers the question a rental company, fleet manager or insurer may ask: what work was carried out. Keep it.
- Check the label on the pump next time, not the colour of the handle.
