Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Farndon? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled cars where they sit, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, across Farndon and the remainder of Cheshire. The first thing to do is not to start your engine. When the motor has not turned over and the fuel is still in your tank, a fuel drain is nearly always all it needs, and the following few minutes settle that, not how much went in. Call us before anything else begins, and you'll learn what comes after that.

Petrol in a diesel: what to try first

  • Don't crank it — and never depend on it if it starts. Here is the bit motorists get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol motor fed diesel usually just can't run, so the person stops and the wear ends with them. A diesel fed petrol normally starts, idles and drives off just fine for a couple of miles. It isn't okay. It is wearing out the fuel system while you drive.
  • Two jobs, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps the high-pressure fuel pump and injectors protected. Petrol only manages the one. Which is why your ignition remains off too — turn it on and you frequently prime your system, and that is petrol exiting that tank for just those parts.
  • Don't weaken it. Diesel poured on top removes nothing, and so all you have is more of what was already there, since percentage is not how a diesel fuel system handles petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The type makes no difference.
  • We would sooner drive to an odd spot than have it started — so if you safely can, stay put. Nothing is simpler to sort than a vehicle that hasn't shifted. On the verge on High Street, that means hazards on and leave it.
  • Check where you are before ringing. A postcode beginning CH3 6, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise the technician circles instead of showing up.
  • Ring 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three queries — what got in, about how much, and whether the engine has been run. Those answers determine everything that follows.

Your high-pressure pump did that morning run working on a liquid that had given up much of the protection it is designed around. Diesel lubricates that pump, and the injectors with it, before any of your fuel burns; petrol does the burning and none of the oiling. So picture a diesel Volkswagen Golf, fuelled at quarter past eight, taken in to work, and parked sitting at Wrexham Central till you realise close to eleven. Three hours of sitting have changed nothing about it. The few miles before that altered a good deal, which is why the question our engineers ask is about mileage not hours. Phone us. Keep the car just where it sits.

Petrol in your Renault Clio, and it takes diesel? Shopping in the boot, you outside ALDI, somewhere in Farndon? Then call us, and leave your engine out of it — not even to exit the spot. A technician comes out to you. Tank drained, fuel lines purged, fresh diesel in, and home you go. Easy throttle over a mile pulls little, and so these are often the straightforward cases.

It will fire up. It will pull away quite happily. That's the trouble, because a diesel on a thinned tank acts normally while wearing down the components its fuel should be lubricating. So no, don't chance the drive home from Peal O'Bells — leave the Audi A3 and ring us.

A vehicle you collected two days ago gets driven further before anyone sees anything, which is the hire and courtesy problem in one sentence — and how far it went is what settles the quantity of petrol getting to the fuel injectors. Nothing careless about the mistake itself: a modern diesel filler neck accepts the smaller petrol nozzle with almost no resistance, so unfamiliar places see most of these. Ring us from wherever you are, near Coronation Meadow or not, and we will come to the Ford Kuga.

Repaired and starting are not the same thing, and the difference is your circuit: our technicians flush it, and take the filter off where there's a serviceable one. Compare that with the confident advice you'll get — drain the car, refill with clean diesel. Half right. Do precisely that to a diesel Peugeot 208 close to St. Chad's Church and it will start, which is exactly why the advice sounds plausible. Then the engine pulls the petrol left behind in your filter, and in the feed lines, straight back through your pump, as emptying a tank does nothing whatever about fuel that has already left it. Ring us instead.

Forecourt draining for petrol in a diesel

Much of this work starts at a pump, so a good share of that ends up finished on site. If you're still at the forecourt at the nearest petrol station, that's usually where the drain gets done — our technicians work on petrol station forecourts all the time, with the site's agreement.

At a forecourt, it is halted with the engine never started, and nowhere else does that. Anywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was started and driven to get there, which means fuel was pulled from that tank, through the filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That is not a catastrophe, and our engineers can still put it right where it stands. It does mean the fuel lines and the fuel filter need rinsing as well as the tank, and that's decided by the few seconds between reading the receipt and going for your key.

Clear of the petrol pump, the next driver can get by — so yes, let the staff help you roll it. Well worth doing. Starting the car to move four car lengths is not.

Service around Farndon

Holt, Crewe-by-Farndon, Churton, Caldecott Green, Ridleywood — every one of those on the rounds that carry us over to Farndon as well, a village.

If yours is not on the list it does not mean we don't come — there are separate pages for the majority of places across Cheshire, and the ones mentioned above are merely the immediate neighbours. On the boundary, or anywhere a satnav misreads? Phone and enquire instead of assuming.

Look at our map for the ground included here. Every bit of it is ground we cover: a kerbside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You don't move the vehicle anywhere.

Stopped on the kerb anywhere in Farndon?

Not everyone gets a safe spot to pull in. Hazards flashing in a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge of Churton Road since you worked it out after setting off — our technicians take that call often enough that it's the ordinary kind.

Okay there? Sit beside it. Not fine? Step out and away from it. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls the mix further into the system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why your motor does not get restarted to limp somewhere handier. However tricky the spot, it is no trouble for us to get to it, and that's much better for your car than driving on.

So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel over some miles

under 10 miles out of Farndon, the local M53 is what counts now. A misfilled diesel will often take you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong, and the symptoms when they arrive are typically a drop in power, a rough idle and some smoke rather than a neat stop.

The first sensible exit is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone. Assume the worst of it on a long trip. Anything close to the under 10 miles to the closest city, and the mixture has been through the filter, through the pump, through your injectors. Say so when you ring. What our technicians bring alters.

About Farndon

Farndon is a village situated on the banks of the River Dee in Cheshire, with a low elevation of around 28 metres. Farndon lies near the Welsh border, approximately 5.5 miles from Wrexham and within a short distance of nearby villages such as Holt and Churton. Farndon has a population of around 1717 people, predominantly living in detached houses. Farndon is located in the North West region of England, about 159 miles from London.

What our technicians do when our engineers reach you around Farndon

  • Our engineers establish what was put in, how much, and if the engine has run. The responses shape the work, which is why our technicians ask before pricing.
  • The tank is emptied completely.
  • What is remaining in the fuel system shouldn't be what caused the issue, so your fuel lines get rinsed and the filter cleaned.
  • New diesel goes in, and then your system gets bled.
  • Your engine is turned on and tested to confirm it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

Then it's ready to pull away. Long-term damage is very rare when it has been noticed early, and since everything is done where the vehicle is, it never needs to go to a workshop.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Farndon is a distinct matter

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the first instruction is unchanged — the motor stays off — while this fault under it's a separate one altogether. Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and strips out the protection the fuel system depends on. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings rust and deposits.

We handle both, and AdBlue removal around Farndon has its own page with the full story — including why it's usually the more significant of the two.

Farndon costs for a petrol-in-diesel drain

Our engineers can't put one price on this page frankly, since the job is not one job. What changes it:

  • Has it been started or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, against how much your tank takes.
  • Which was put in: petrol or AdBlue.
  • Access: the car's position, and whether working on it there's safe for our van.

A straight answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: your vehicle, the quantity, and if it has run. For the car at home that is going nowhere and is not pressing, is fine too.

Petrol in diesel questions from Farndon motorists

Fuel drains on a Farndon petrol station forecourt

Yes, and it is where a big share of this work gets done. Tell us which one you're at when you call and we'll tell you if our technicians can work there. With the site's agreement we work at Shell and the other forecourts nearby regularly.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Litres are not the yardstick. Proportion is, and far more than either, it matters whether anything has been run. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different situations, certainly. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is if the fuel system has had that blend sucked through it.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Stop somewhere sensible, switch off, and keep the car off. Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the problem out of your tank then into your pump and injectors, yes, and it remains recoverable much more often than people assume.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A drain and flush carried out properly is not an alteration and doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. Another reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one.

Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

What petrol has thinned is not restored by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a different issue. So no. Petrol stays in that tank later, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no break from it.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Wherever your car is, our technicians drain and clean it there, so a drive to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

You, and the vehicle, still together?

Keep the engine switched off.

Already driven it? Then stop somewhere safe, switch off, then let it stay that way. A still, cold vehicle is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more often than drivers assume.
