Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Finberry? Don't Start It

If you have not turned on your engine yet, do not. A drain and nothing else is nearly always what a car requires while the petrol is still sitting in the tank and your engine has not turned over, which is why it's the following few minutes that matter, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel comes to the vehicle wherever it has ended up in Finberry or the remainder of Kent, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, and drains and flushes it there. Phone so we can show you what comes next before you try anything else.

Petrol in a diesel: what to do now

  • Never crank it — and never believe it when it runs. Here is the part motorists have wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol motor given diesel generally just cannot run, and so the driver stops and the damage stops with them. A diesel filled with petrol usually starts, idles and drives off just fine for several miles. It's not all right. It is wearing out your fuel system while you drive.
  • Leave the ignition off as well. Diesel performs two jobs: it burns, and before it combusts it lubricates that high-pressure pump and the injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. Turning the car's ignition on is commonly sufficient to prime your system, which draws this petrol out of the tank and into exactly those parts.
  • Do not add diesel on top to dilute it. A diesel fuel system won't tolerate petrol by percentage in the way that guidance suggests, and topping up removes nothing — it just gives you a fuller tank of the same mixture. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.
  • Sit tight if it is sensible to. Hazards on, engine off, leave the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Song Thrush Drive, anywhere — a difficult location for us is better than a started engine, and nothing is quicker for us to sort than a car that never shifted.
  • Before you call, gather your location. Anything next to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode beginning TN25 7 — that is what settles whether the technician turns up or circles.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three points — what was put in, approximately how many litres, plus if the engine has been turned over. Your replies determine whatever happens next.

Never drive it home. The commute has already sent a real amount of petrol-thinned diesel through the high-pressure pump of your Volkswagen Tiguan, and the journey back would about double it for no gain at all. Phone us from the platform if that's easier. Our engineers don't need you hovering over the vehicle outside Ashford International whilst our engineers get on, and we would very much rather talk to you tonight than find out on Monday.

You will be told to shift the car out of that gateway and sort it out later. Don't. On the zig-zags outside Finberry Primary School, a misfuelled Nissan Qashqai running on diesel is in the way, and that is all it is. Fire it up three more times being helpful and you have turned a tank into a fuel system: every start primes the lines, every prime drags more petrol beyond your filter on to the pump. Let them grumble. Phone us.

Easy job, this one — till someone takes it home. A diesel Mercedes C-Class left by the pub in the village with petrol in the tank loses nothing by standing there overnight, so leave the car and phone us once it is light. Expect a question about that drive there, though. Short and cold is precisely where petrol struggles to burn, and what won't burn can work past the piston rings then into the oil.

Sitting still, it gets no worse. The pump isn't turning, and so whatever occurred on the way to Captains Wood in that diesel Dacia Duster is finished happening. Time is yours. Just don't take it home on the motor to find more of that.

Pulled off the forecourt, read your receipt, and parked the diesel Audi A3 up near TK Maxx a couple of hundred yards later? That's about as well as this goes once the motor has turned. Ring us then leave it off. The short hop genuinely helps, but it was still a start and a drive, so weakened fuel has reached the filter and the pump — which is why we rinse the lines rather than only emptying that tank.

At the forecourt: removing petrol from a diesel

The work starts at a pump, generally. Quite often it wraps up on site as well. Still at Tesco? Then that's typically where it gets done. Garage forecourts are normal for us, with the consent of the owner.

Nowhere else other than a garage can this be caught with your motor still unstarted. Fuel drawn out of that tank and through the filter, right to the high-pressure pump, is what occurs when the motor is started and your car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes the filter and your lines along with that tank. That's still not a catastrophe, and our technicians sort it out where your car is. What decides it is whether the ignition was reached for in the seconds after your receipt was checked.

Away from the petrol pump, the next driver can get past — so yes, let the attendants help you move it. Very much worth it. Shifting it four bays does not warrant starting the engine.

Do our technicians cover your end of Finberry?

Those same trips carry us to Cheesemans Green, South Willesborough, South Stour, Sevington and Bliby besides Finberry, which is a village.

There are dedicated pages for most towns around Kent, and the ones listed above are simply the immediate neighbours — so yours being missing from that list tells you nothing about if our technicians come. Presuming is the habit to avoid, particularly on a border or anywhere your satnav fails. Ring us to check.

The area the page covers is on our map. The car does not need to come to us. We work over every bit of it — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Kerbside call-outs around Finberry

Some people find no sensible spot to pull over whatsoever. A routine call for us and not an unusual one: worked out after setting off, finished up by the verge on Goldfinch Drive or at a lay-by with the hazard lights flashing.

Whether you wait beside the motor or step away from it hangs on if sitting nearby is safe. Don't fire it up to get to a safer place. It'll go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging drags the blend deeper into your fuel system. We'll send the van to a difficult location without any trouble, and for the vehicle that is far better than pressing on.

A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

This is where the M20 counts, under 3 miles from Finberry. It will frequently get you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it's some smoke, a rough idle and power draining away — not a clean stop. Misfuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.

The next safe junction is the one to take. Switch off there, then leave the restarting alone. Long drive? Anything close to the under 15 miles to the nearest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it got to by the mixture. Say that on the phone, because it affects what goes in the van.

A little about Finberry

Finberry is a village in Kent, situated on the banks of the River Stour at an elevation of around 46 metres. Finberry lies near the villages of Cheesemans Green, South Willesborough, and South Stour, and is approximately 13.7 miles from Canterbury. Finberry has a population of around 1016 people, predominantly living in semi-detached housing. Finberry is also within commuting distance of London, being around 51.6 miles from the capital.

What we do when we get to you around Finberry

  • We establish what got in, how much, and if the engine has run. The replies alter the work, which is why our engineers ask before quoting.
  • The tank gets drained completely.
  • Fuel lines are rinsed through and your filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the system that caused any of this.
  • Our technicians put clean diesel in and bleed the system.
  • The motor is started and checked to confirm it runs properly on fresh diesel.

From that point, you're ready to drive away. Our technicians do everything wherever the car has ended up, which means it never needs to go to a garage, and if it has been spotted soon, it's very unusual for there to be lasting damage.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Finberry is a distinct job

The fault is not the same, though the opening step is — do not crank it — if what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol. The protection a fuel system depends on is taken away by petrol, which dilutes your diesel. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to corrosion and residue.

Both are ours. There is a separate Finberry page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

Finberry prices for a petrol-in-diesel drain

What changes the figure is laid out below, because this job isn't one job and our engineers cannot honestly put a single number on this page.

  • Whether the motor has been started or driven. This is the key one.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, measured against how much that tank takes.
  • Whether it was unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Access: the car's position, and if working on it there's sensible for a technician.

A straight answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: your vehicle, the quantity, and whether it has run. Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is fine for that.

Finberry drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

I am on a forecourt around Finberry. Can you drain the vehicle here?

Yes — forecourts are where a big share of this happens. Tell us which one you're at when you call and we will tell you if we can work there. With the owner's agreement our engineers attend BP and the other forecourts nearby all the time.

Is there a safe quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Whether your motor has run matters much more, though the ratio matters too, rather than the litres. Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that blend been sucked right through, or has it not?

I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Stop somewhere safe, switch off, then keep the vehicle off. It's salvageable far more regularly than drivers expect, even though driving is what takes the trouble from the tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart it.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

It's not an alteration, so a drain and flush carried out properly does not void a manufacturer's warranty. Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. It belongs to a different fault from a separate era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind puts back. Your tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and your pump still has to put up with it.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Wherever your car is, our technicians drain and flush it there, so a trip to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

Standing next to it?

The motor remains off.

Switch it off somewhere safe and leave it off, if you have already driven it. A still, cold car is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more regularly than drivers assume.
