Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Fir Vale

Do not turn on your engine. While the fuel is still sitting in that tank and your engine has not been started, a fuel drain is almost always all it needs — and that is decided in the coming few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled cars where they are, all over Fir Vale and the remainder of South Yorkshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive. Contact us so we can show you what comes next before you try any more.

Your first five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • Never crank it — and don't depend on it when it does start. This is the bit most people get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol motor given diesel typically just cannot run, so the driver stops and the damage ends with them. A diesel given petrol generally starts, ticks over and drives away quite happily for a few miles. It is not all right. It's wearing the fuel system as you drive.
  • Diesel combusts, and before it combusts it greases — that injection pump, its injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave the car's ignition alone also: switching it on is often sufficient to prime that system, and priming moves petrol from the tank into precisely those parts.
  • Do not put diesel on top to dilute it. A diesel fuel system does not tolerate petrol by percentage the way that guidance implies, and topping up removes nothing — it merely leaves you a bigger tank of the same mixture. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.
  • A car that hasn't moved is the simplest one to deal with, so stay where you are if you sensibly can. Pulled up on the verge on Longley Drive? Hazards on, then leave the vehicle there. An awkward place suits us better than a started diesel.
  • Before you dial, have your whereabouts. Anything closest to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode starting S5 7 — that's what determines whether our van arrives or circles.
  • What went in, approximately how many litres, and whether the motor has fired — those three replies settle the full call-out. Dial 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

Can petrol be taken from a diesel on the forecourt?

The work starts at the pump, generally. Quite often it finishes on site as well. Still at Texaco? Then that is usually where it gets done. Station forecourts are everyday for us, with the agreement of the station.

At the forecourt, it is stopped with your engine never fired, and no place else manages it. The few seconds between reading the receipt and going for the key settle how much needs flushing. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the car was switched on and driven to get there, so fuel was drawn from the tank, through your filter then into your high-pressure pump. That means the fuel lines and your filter require cleaning as well as your tank. It is not a disaster, and our technicians can still sort it out where the car sits.

The attendants will normally offer to wheel the car away from the pump so the next driver can get past. It is worth doing. Starting the car to shift four car lengths is not.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Fir Vale

Simple, these ones, and the reason is the mileage: a mile at gentle throttle uses hardly any of it. Petrol into a diesel Mercedes C-Class somewhere in Fir Vale, a boot packed with shopping, and you stuck at Tesco — phone. Leaving the space is not worth a restart. Your tank gets cleared where it sits, the fuel lines purged, clean diesel in, and you head home.

Your diesel Dacia Duster will have seemed completely usual on the way back from E-ACT Pathways Academy. They do, and that is the trap with petrol in a diesel instead of the other way round. Put diesel in a petrol vehicle and it mostly will not run, and so the driver stops and the wear stops with them. Put petrol in a diesel and it fires up, ticks over and pulls away as though nothing has happened — meanwhile your high-pressure pump does its work without the lubrication your fuel is meant to be supplying. Nothing tells you, since from behind the wheel there's nothing to alert you about. Phone with approximately how far you went and how hard you worked it; the second one matters more than the first.

A diesel Audi A3 parked in the car park at Devonshire Arms with a tank full of petrol in it is an easy job, right up till somebody takes it home. Park the vehicle there overnight and phone us first thing. Nothing worsens while it sits. What we'll want to know is if the drive there was brief and chilly, because that's where petrol is least likely to burn properly — and whatever doesn't burn can slip past the piston rings then into the sump.

Nothing gets worse whilst it sits. Whatever your diesel Vauxhall Astra did on the way to Secret Garden, it's doing none of it now: your pump is not turning. So take your time — but do not drive the car home to buy yourself any.

Most of these happen somewhere strange, and the cause is mechanical rather than careless — practically no resistance meets a slimmer petrol nozzle entering a newer diesel filler neck. Two days into a diesel BMW X1, a fill-up by St. Leonard's Church that you didn't think about? Phone us from where you are. Courtesy and hire cars go further before anybody spots it, and the further they go, the more petrol arrives at the fuel injectors.

Areas our team reach around Fir Vale

Being a residential suburb, Fir Vale gets a steady call, while the areas round about go along on the same run: Longley Estate and Upper Crabtree, Shirecliffe and Lower Crabtree, Firth Park.

Our technicians still come. The places above are only the nearest neighbours, and a page exists for the majority of locations in South Yorkshire, so an absence from the list is not an absence from the coverage. Assuming is the habit to avoid, especially on a boundary or somewhere a satnav struggles. Contact us to enquire.

Look at the map for the area shown here. Kerbside, forecourt, drive, car park: every bit of it is ground our engineers cover, and none of it needs your vehicle to come to us.

Kerbside breakdowns in Fir Vale

Not everybody finds a suitable place to pull in. Set off, then realised? Finished up along the verge of Longley Lane, or sat in some lay-by with the hazards going? That is a normal call here. Not an odd one.

Out of the car if it isn't safe to wait there, beside it when it is. Don't fire up the engine to limp it somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging the blend further into the fuel system. We will bring the van to an inconvenient place without any trouble, and for the car that is far better than carrying on.

Petrol in a diesel, but your car has travelled

The M1 is the road which counts now, and it runs under 3 miles from Fir Vale. Lost power, a rough idle, some smoke: those are the signs when they come, instead of a neat stop — and a misfilled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong at all.

Take the next exit that is sensible, stop there, and do not start the car to reposition. On a longer run — anything near the under 3 miles to the closest city — take it the contamination has been through the filter, your pump and the fuel injectors, and say so when you phone. It changes what we bring.

Where is Fir Vale?

Fir Vale is a suburban area in South Yorkshire, situated near the River Don and close to the city of Sheffield. Fir Vale has a mix of housing types, but is predominantly composed of flats, and is located at an elevation of around 122 metres. Fir Vale is part of the larger Sheffield urban area, with nearby places including Longley Estate and Upper Crabtree. Fir Vale is home to approximately 5374 residents, according to recent estimates.

What our engineers do when our technicians reach you around Fir Vale

  • The responses shape the work, which is why we ask before quoting: what was put in, how much of that, and if the motor has run.
  • The tank is cleared of it.
  • Fuel lines are purged through and the filter cleaned, leaving nothing in your system that caused any of this.
  • The system gets bled, on clean diesel.
  • It is fired up with clean diesel in it, and our technicians confirm that it's running correctly.

That has it ready to pull away. There is no need for a garage at any point, as the work is all done where your car is, and when it's spotted soon, permanent damage is very unusual.

AdBlue in the diesel tank by mistake, around Fir Vale?

The problem isn't the same, though the first step is — don't fire it up — if what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol. Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and removes the protection the fuel system relies on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus residue.

AdBlue removal around Fir Vale has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it is frequently the more serious of the two. We handle both.

Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel drain around Fir Vale

Our technicians cannot put one figure on this page honestly, as this job isn't one job. What shifts it:

  • Has it been run or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, measured against how much the tank takes.
  • Whether it was unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Access: the car's position, and whether working on it there is sensible for our van.

A clear answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: your car, the amount, and whether it has run. If it is not urgent — the car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Petrol in diesel questions from Fir Vale drivers

Fuel drains on a Fir Vale petrol station forecourt

A large share of this work takes place there, so yes. Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like JET is somewhere we're often enough, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you will hear if working there is possible.

Is there a sensible quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Proportion decides it rather than litres — and more than either, whether the motor has run. What settles how much work is needed is if that mixture has been pulled through the system — because though five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct matter from five in a full one, either way that is the question.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Somewhere safe, then stop, then turn off and keep it off. Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the issue out of the tank and into the pump and injectors, yes, and it remains recoverable a lot more often than people assume.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A drain and flush carried out properly isn't a change and does not void a manufacturer's warranty. Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one.

Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

Two-stroke oil solves a different problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No. Your pump still has to put up with it, since the tank still has petrol in it later.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Not at all. Our engineers drain and flush the vehicle wherever it is, so there is no need to take it to a franchised dealer.

You, and the vehicle, still together?

Switched off is how the car stays.

Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere safe, switch off, then let the car stay that way. A still, cold motor is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more regularly than drivers assume.
