Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Fishburn Park? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled vehicles where they sit, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, all over Fishburn Park and the remainder of North Yorkshire. The first thing to do is not to turn on the motor. While the motor has not yet been started and the petrol is still in the tank, a tank drain is almost always all it needs, and the following few minutes settle that, not how much was put in. Contact us before everything else begins, so you'll know what happens after that.

Your first five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • Feed a petrol engine diesel and it will normally fail to run at all, and so the motorist stops there and so does the harm. Feed a diesel petrol and the car starts, it ticks over, it drives off — fine for a few miles. Most people have that muddled, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So do not start it. And having started, do not trust it: your fuel system is wearing as you drive.
  • Two things, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps the injection pump and injectors lubricated. Petrol only does the one. That is why the car's ignition remains off too — switch it on and you commonly prime that system, and that's petrol leaving your tank for just those components.
  • Topping up gets rid of nothing. It leaves you a larger tank of the same mixture, since a diesel fuel system doesn't accept petrol by percentage the way that advice suggests — so never put diesel on top to water down it. Type is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • Sit tight if it is wise to. Hazards on, engine off, leave it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Fishburn Road, anywhere — an awkward location for us is better than a started motor, and nothing is simpler for us to sort out than a vehicle that never moved.
  • A van turning up instead of circling hinges on two things: a postcode starting YO21 1, and whatever is closest to you with a label on it. Keep both prepared before you call.
  • What was put in, approximately how many litres, and also if the motor has run — the three details determine the whole job. Dial 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Petrol in a diesel Renault Megane, sat at Whitby since this morning? The wait has lost you nothing — fuel sitting in a tank is idle. It was the trip in that drew weakened diesel through the pump. Call us before you collect it.

A diesel pump meters fuel on demand, and a rushed morning run asks for plenty — so three miles in your BMW 3 Series seems like nothing and isn't. Twenty to nine by Airy Hill Primary School, running late, a receipt in your hand reading unleaded: hazards on, ignition off, phone.

It will fire up. It will move off just fine. That is the issue, because a diesel on a weakened tank behaves normally while wearing down the components its fuel should be lubricating. So no, do not try the trip home from First In Last Out — leave the Ford Focus then phone.

Diesel has to be thick enough to seal the tightly fitted parts it flows through, and petrol weakens it. That's the whole process, and it explains the ordinary Airy Hill Play Park call: a diesel Mercedes C-Class that went out there without a murmur and came back down on power, lumpy at idle, perhaps smoking a little. A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically — it needs your fuel to hold pressure, not only to burn — so when the fuel dilutes, pressure that should build then stay built starts bleeding past clearances instead, and the motor gets a weaker, later, less even delivery than it was built about. None of that is the motor failing, which is the bit worth hearing: it is the fuel no longer acting like diesel, and it stops when the fuel is put right.

About as well as this goes, once the engine has turned: away from the pumps, receipt read, and your diesel Peugeot 3008 parked close to Eskmouth Scout Hall hardly two streets on. Ring us, then leave the vehicle off. A short drive does genuinely help. It was still a start and still a drive, though, and so the filter and the pump have had weakened fuel through them — hence purging the fuel lines instead of only draining that tank.

Pump-side draining for petrol in a diesel

The job begins at the pump, mostly. Regularly it ends at one as well. The drain generally gets done on the spot. Still on the forecourt at Esso? Given the owner's permission, that is somewhere we work, and often.

Before the motor has run — a garage is the single setting the mistake is stopped. Everywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the car was switched on and driven to get there, which means fuel was sucked from your tank, through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure pump. That's not a calamity, and our technicians can still deal with it where it sits. It does mean the fuel lines and your filter need cleaning as well as that tank, and that's settled by the few seconds between reading the till receipt and reaching for the key.

The attendants will generally help you roll it clear of the pump so the next customer can get past. That's worth doing. Cranking it just to roll four car lengths isn't.

Fishburn Park plus the villages next to it

These same journeys carry us to Whitby, Airy Hill, West Cliff, High Stakesby and Ruswarp besides Fishburn Park, which is a residential suburb.

Our technicians still come. The names above are only the nearest neighbours, and a page is there for nearly all locations in North Yorkshire, so an absence from the list isn't an absence from our coverage. Ring us and ask rather than assuming, especially where you are on the boundary or anywhere the satnav can't find.

The area the page spans appears on the map. Kerbside, forecourt, drive, car park: every bit of that is territory our technicians work on, and none of that asks the vehicle to come to us.

Roadside breakdowns around Fishburn Park

Some people find no suitable spot to pull in at all. If you worked it out after setting off and ended up along the verge beside Oswy Street, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazards going, that is a routine call for us instead of an unusual one.

Wait by the motor when it's wise to be inside, and out of the car if it is not. Don't fire it up to reach a nicer place. It'll go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging draws the mixture deeper into the fuel system. However tricky the location, it's no problem for us to get to it, and that is a lot better for your car than carrying on.

A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?

Your A1(M) is the one which counts now, and lies under 50 miles from Fishburn Park. It will frequently get you onto it, and some way along, before you feel a thing. Then it's some smoke, a lumpy idle and power ebbing away — not a neat stop. Misfuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Don't restart it to reposition. Come off at the first sensible junction and switch off. On a longer drive — anything close to the under 50 miles to the closest city — take it the petrol has been through your filter, your pump and the fuel injectors, and tell us when you ring. It alters what our engineers bring.

Where is Fishburn Park?

Fishburn Park is a suburban area located on the coast of North Yorkshire, with an elevation of 27 metres above sea level. Fishburn Park sits near the popular seaside towns of Whitby and West Cliff, and is approximately 40 miles from the historic city of York. Fishburn Park is characterised by its predominantly semi-detached housing stock, which reflects the typical residential architecture of the region. Fishburn Park is also relatively distant from London, at a distance of around 206 miles.

The visit around Fishburn Park, step by step

  • Our engineers ask first, quote after. What was put in? How much? Has your motor run? Those replies change what the work actually is.
  • The polluted mixture comes out of that tank.
  • What is left in your system should not be what started the trouble, so the fuel lines get flushed and the filter cleaned.
  • The system gets primed, on new diesel.
  • It is fired up with clean diesel in it, and our technicians confirm that it's running properly.

That has your car ready to drive away. There is no need for a garage at any stage, since the work is all done where your car is, and when it's noticed soon, lasting damage is very rare.

A distinct problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Fishburn Park

The problem is not the same, though the first step is — don't start it — if what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol. The lubrication a fuel system depends on is stripped away by petrol, which dilutes your diesel. Corrosion and residue are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, since AdBlue is urea in water.

Frequently the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the details sits on its own Fishburn Park page. Both are ours to deal with.

What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost in Fishburn Park

One figure would not be honest here, because this is not one job. These are the things that move it:

  • This is the key one: whether your engine has been run, or driven.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, set against how much your tank can hold.
  • The sort of fluid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Whether a technician can safely reach the vehicle and work on it, which depends on where the vehicle is.

Tell us what your vehicle is, how much got in, and whether the engine has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range. For the vehicle at home that is going nowhere and isn't pressing, is fine too.

Fishburn Park motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

Fuel drains on a Fishburn Park petrol station forecourt

Yes, and it is where a good share of this work takes place. Tell us which one you're at when you phone and we will tell you whether we can work there. With the owner's agreement our technicians work at Shell and the other forecourts around town all the time.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Litres are not the measure. Ratio is, and far more than either, it counts if anything has been run. Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that blend been pulled right through, or has it not?

I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. What now?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does move the issue out of that tank and into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays recoverable a lot more frequently than people assume.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

It's not an alteration, so a drain and flush carried out properly doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty. What is likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the motor to remain off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. It belongs to a different fault from a different era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind restores. Petrol stays in that tank later on, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no reprieve from it.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

You do not need one. Your car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a main dealer.

Waiting next to it?

The engine stays off.

If you have already driven the vehicle, pull in somewhere safe, switch it off and keep it off. This is recoverable from far more often than drivers assume, and a stationary, cold motor is the best place to be in.
