Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Fishery?

With the tank still carrying the fuel and the engine not yet turned over, nearly every job requires only a drain, so leave your engine off. That outcome is determined in the minutes straight after filling up, rather than by the amount that went in. Throughout Fishery and the remainder of Berkshire, Petrol in Diesel drains your car and flushes it where it is, whether at a roadside, on a driveway or at a forecourt. Contact us so our team can tell you what follows next before you try anything else.

Petrol in a diesel: what to try now

  • Give a petrol engine diesel and it will normally fail to run at all, and so the driver stops there and so does the wear. Give a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it idles, it drives off — all right for several miles. Most people have that backwards, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So do not start it. And if started, do not trust it: your fuel system is wearing down while you drive.
  • Turning the car's ignition on usually primes your system, and priming is what draws petrol out of that tank and into your pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps greased on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol does the burning and none of the protecting. Leave your ignition alone.
  • Don't tip diesel on top to water down it. A diesel fuel system won't accept petrol by percentage as that advice presumes, and topping up gets rid of nothing — it simply hands you a larger tank of the same mix. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.
  • Sit tight if it's safe to. Hazards on, ignition off, leave the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Glebe Road, anywhere — a tricky place for us trumps a started diesel, and nothing is quicker for us to deal with than a motor that never moved.
  • Check where you are before ringing. A postcode starting SL6 1, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise the van circles rather than arriving.
  • Call 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three things — what got in, roughly how many litres, and whether the car has been started. Those answers shape all that happens next.

Petrol in a diesel Volkswagen Golf, sitting at Maidenhead since breakfast? The wait has cost you nothing — fuel in a tank is dormant. It was the trip in that pushed weakened diesel through the pump. Call us before you move the car.

Nothing warns you, because from behind the wheel there is nothing to be warned about. The diesel Nissan Qashqai will have seemed entirely normal on the way back from Oldfield Primary School, and they all do — which is the catch with petrol in a diesel rather than the reverse. Diesel in a petrol motor usually refuses to run, stopping the motorist and stopping the damage with them. Petrol in a diesel fires up, ticks over, drives off as though nothing had happened, and all the while your pump keeps working without the protection its fuel is meant to supply. Tell us approximately how far, and how hard. The harder counts more.

Your pump isn't turning, and so whatever your diesel Dacia Duster did on the way to Braywick Park Nature Reserve, none of it is happening now. Nothing gets worse while it sits. Take your time over this — but never drive it home to buy any.

About as well as this goes, once your engine has turned: away from the pumps, receipt read, and the diesel Mercedes E-Class left near Desborough Bowling Club barely two streets on. Call us, then leave the vehicle off. A short drive does really help. It was still a start and still a drive, though, so the fuel filter and your pump have had diluted fuel through them — hence flushing your lines rather than only draining that tank.

A few streets, then it stopped. Throttle limp, idle uneven, and the diesel Citroen C3 is parked up near The Arena. The engine is not giving up — that deadness is fuel that will not build pressure. There's no light on the dash for it, so motors like yours typically get driven again before somebody picks up the phone. Do not. Off, and phone us.

Forecourt draining for petrol in a diesel

Much of the job begins at a forecourt, which means a large part of it ends up completed at one. Still at Esso? Then that is normally where it happens. Petrol station forecourts are routine for us, with the permission of the owner.

Before the motor has started — the forecourt is the one spot the mistake gets caught. Fuel drawn out of your tank and through the filter, all the way to your high-pressure pump, is what occurs when the motor is switched on and the car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes your filter and the fuel lines as well as the tank. That's still not a catastrophe, and our engineers put it right where the vehicle is. What settles it is whether the ignition was reached for in the seconds after the till receipt was checked.

The staff will usually offer to push the vehicle away from the pump so the next driver can get by. That's worth doing. Four car lengths is not worth a start.

Can our technicians serve your corner of Fishery?

The same trips take us to Bray, Maidenhead, Bray Wick, Boyn Hill and Dorney Reach as well as Fishery, which is a residential suburb.

If yours isn't on this list it does not mean we don't come — there are pages for nearly all locations in Berkshire, and the ones listed above are simply the nearest neighbours. Assuming is the thing to avoid, especially on the border or anywhere your phone fails. Contact us to enquire.

This map shows the patch the page includes. We operate at the roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and in car parks over all of that, and the vehicle does not need to move to us.

Fishery: stuck where you stopped

Not everybody gets the opportunity to pull in anywhere safe. If you noticed after setting off and ended up by the verge of Church Road, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazards flashing, that is a normal call for us rather than an unusual one.

Okay where you are? Stay beside it. Not safe? Move out and away from it. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol draws the mix further into the fuel system — and oblige it usually will, which is why the engine doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere safer. Carrying on does your car far more harm than a technician coming out to an awkward spot, and that is no bother for us.

Already run it? Petrol in a diesel after a couple of miles

Here is where the local A308(M) comes in, under a mile out of Fishery. A wrongly fuelled diesel will often get you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong, and the symptoms when they come are generally a loss of power, a lumpy idle and some smoke rather than a tidy stop.

Take the next junction that is sensible, pull up there, and do not restart it to reposition. It affects what our engineers bring, and so mention it when you phone: on a longer run — anything close to the under 25 miles to the closest city — take it the petrol has been through the fuel filter, the pump and your injectors.

Where's Fishery?

Fishery is a suburban area in Berkshire, situated on the riverside with a relatively low elevation of 25 metres. Fishery lies near the towns of Bray, Maidenhead, and Bray Wick, and is characterized by its predominantly detached housing stock. Fishery is located within commuting distance of London, approximately 24.9 miles away, and is also close to the city of St Albans, which is 22.8 miles away.

Once our technicians reach you around Fishery: what follows

  • The replies change the work, which is why we ask before giving a price: what was put in, how much of that, and if the motor has run.
  • The tainted fuel is pulled from your tank.
  • Fuel lines are cleaned through and your filter cleaned, leaving nothing in your system that created any of this.
  • We pour new diesel in and bleed the system.
  • It's started with clean diesel in it, and we make sure that it's running smoothly.

That has your car ready to pull away. Everything is done where your car is, so it never has to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been noticed quickly, long-term damage is very unusual.

AdBlue in the diesel tank instead, in Fishery?

If what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the first rule is the same — do not fire it up — but this fault isn't. Petrol weakens the diesel and strips the lubrication your fuel system depends on. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings rust and build-up.

Our technicians deal with both, and AdBlue removal in Fishery has its own page with the detail — including why it's usually the more serious of the two.

Fishery costs for a petrol-in-diesel drain

One number wouldn't be fair here, as this isn't one job. These are the things that shift it:

  • Has it been started or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, judged against how much that tank can hold.
  • Which got in: unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where your car is, and whether a technician can safely reach and work on it.

A firm answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: your car, the amount, and if it has run. For your car at home that's going nowhere and is not time-critical, works too.

Fishery motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

I'm on a forecourt around Fishery. Can you drain it here?

Yes — forecourts are where a good part of this happens. Tell us which one you are at when you ring and we will tell you whether we can work there. With the station's consent our engineers visit Texaco and the other forecourts locally regularly.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Litres are not the measure. Proportion is, and a lot more than either, it matters if anything has been run. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate situations, of course. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether the fuel system has had that mix drawn through it.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove the vehicle. Now what?

Pull over somewhere safe, switch off, and leave the car off. Driving takes the issue along — out of the tank, into the pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one truly helpful thing left to you is not restarting the car.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain and flush done to a correct standard, which is no alteration at all. Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

What petrol has diluted isn't restored by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a separate fault. So no. The pump still has to put up with it, as the tank still has petrol in it later on.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

You do not need one. The car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to take it to a main dealer.

Is your car still with you?

Turned off is the way the car remains.

Turn it off somewhere safe then leave it off, if you have already driven it. A still, cold vehicle is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from far more often than drivers expect.
