Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Fitzrovia

If you have not started the engine as yet, do not. A fuel drain and nothing else is nearly always what a motor requires while the fuel is still inside that tank and your engine has not run, which is why it is the coming few minutes that matter, not how much got in. Petrol in Diesel goes to the car wherever it has stopped in Fitzrovia or the rest of Greater London, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, and drains and cleans it there. Phone so our team can tell you what happens from here before you attempt much else.

Your next five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • Do not start the car — and do not believe it when it starts. That is the bit motorists get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol motor fed diesel usually just can't run, and so the driver stops and the harm stops with them. A diesel fed petrol generally starts, ticks over and moves off perfectly well for several miles. It isn't okay. It is wearing out the fuel system while you drive.
  • Leave your ignition off too. Diesel has two roles: it ignites, and before it ignites it lubricates the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. Flicking your ignition on is frequently all it takes to prime your system, which pulls that petrol out of your tank then into precisely those components.
  • Topping up gets rid of nothing. It leaves you a bigger tank of the same mix, since a diesel fuel system does not accept petrol by percentage in the way that advice assumes — so don't pour diesel on top to water down it. Type is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • We'd sooner get to a tricky spot than have it started — so if you sensibly can, stay still. Nothing is simpler to sort out than a car that hasn't shifted. On the verge on Charlotte Street, that means hazards on and keep it.
  • Before you phone, have your position. Anything next to you with a label on it, plus a postcode starting W1T 4 — that is what determines whether the technician arrives or circles.
  • Three replies settle the entire call-out: the stuff you tipped in, the ballpark quantity of it, and whether anything has been going since. Our number is 0333 366 0103.

Can petrol be drained from a diesel on the forecourt?

Much of this work begins at a forecourt, meaning a big share of that is completed there. Still at Esso? Then that's generally where it happens. Station forecourts are everyday for us, with the permission of the owner.

Nowhere other than a forecourt can this be caught with the engine still untouched. Fuel sucked out of that tank and through the fuel filter, all the way to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what occurs when the motor is switched on and the vehicle is driven to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush covers the filter and the fuel lines as well as that tank. That's still not a calamity, and we put it right where your car stands. What decides it is whether the ignition was turned in the seconds after the receipt was checked.

The attendants will generally happily wheel the vehicle out from the pump so the next motorist can get through. That's worth doing. Starting the car just to shift four car lengths isn't.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Fitzrovia

We are in car parks like the one outside Lidl a lot, and it's hardly ever the fuel that complicates them. It's the bay. Motors both sides. Trolleys stacked up behind. At times a height bar at the entrance, which decides if a technician gets to you at all. So say how boxed in you are when you ring, and which way the car is pointing. If there is no room to work next to your Mercedes C-Class, our engineers move it without the engine. That's not fussiness over a handful of seconds: starts prime things, blend comes out of the tank toward your pump, and a motor moved twice for a nicer spot is gradually a worse job than one nobody touched.

Your diesel BMW 5 Series will have seemed perfectly normal on the way back from All Souls CofE Primary School. They always do, and that's the catch with petrol in a diesel and not the other way round. Put diesel in a petrol motor and it generally won't run, and so the driver stops and the wear stops with them. Put petrol in a diesel and it fires up, idles and pulls away as though nothing has happened — all the while your high-pressure pump does its work without the lubrication your fuel is meant to be providing. Nothing alerts you, since from behind the wheel there is nothing to caution you about. Phone with about how far you went and how hard you worked it; the second one matters more than the first.

Three answers determine most of the work: what went in, about how much, and whether the motor has run since. We ask for them when we get to the car in the car park by Carpenters Arms. After that the polluted blend comes out of that tank, your lines are flushed, and where your Vauxhall Astra has a replaceable filter, it comes off. After new diesel is in and your system bled, our engineers fire it up and confirm it runs smoothly before you set off.

A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically: your fuel has to hold pressure, not only burn. Thin that fuel and pressure which should build and stay built leaks past tolerances instead, leaving the motor a poorer, later, less even delivery than it was built about. Petrol dilutes diesel, and diesel has to be viscous enough to seal the precision parts it runs through — that's the entire mechanism. It accounts for the normal The Poets' Park call too: a diesel Citroen C3 that drove out without fuss and came back down on power, uneven at idle, possibly smoking a little. None of which is the motor failing, and that's the bit worth hearing. The fuel has stopped behaving like diesel. Put the fuel right and it stops.

Hire car? Company car? Phone them before us. Some agreements want the firm to sign off the work, and that is much faster dealt with up front than later. Then phone us about the Hyundai Tucson, the diesel one, near Choreographic Form. Do not worry that you cannot say how full that tank was — nearly no one can two days into a vehicle, and it is something our engineers check on site. The reason for asking: harm from petrol in a diesel is a matter of proportion. A few litres in a nearly empty tank make a far stronger blend than in a full one, and petrol is built to resist the very thing a diesel needs of that, which is igniting when compressed. Stronger mixture, more knocking, more smoke, flatter throttle.

Areas our vans cover in Fitzrovia

Those same runs bring us to Somers Town, Bloomsbury, Marylebone, Soho and Regents Park besides Fitzrovia, which is a residential suburb.

If yours isn't on the list it doesn't mean we do not come — there are separate pages for most towns in Greater London, and the ones listed above are simply the immediate neighbours. Presuming is the mistake to avoid, above all on the border or anywhere a satnav fails. Phone to check.

The patch this page includes appears on the map. We operate at the roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and in car parks over all of that, and the vehicle doesn't need to move to us.

Fitzrovia: stuck where you pulled up

Not everyone has a safe place to stop. Hazards going at a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge on Howland Street as you noticed after setting off — our engineers take that call so often that it is the ordinary kind.

Okay there? Wait by it. Not safe? Move out and away from it. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol draws the mixture further into your fuel system — and oblige it usually will, which is why your motor doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere better. We'll bring the van to a tricky location without any bother, and for your car that is much better than pressing on.

Already run it? Petrol in a diesel over a couple of miles

under 10 miles out of Fitzrovia, the local M1 is what matters now. Lost power, an uneven idle, smoke: those are the symptoms when they appear, rather than a tidy stop — and a misfilled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong at all.

Take the first exit that's sensible, pull up there, and never start the car to reposition. It changes what our engineers bring, and so tell us when you phone: on a longer drive — anything near the under 3 miles to the closest city — assume the contamination has been through your filter, your pump and your injectors.

Where is Fitzrovia?

Fitzrovia is a suburban area in central London, situated near the city's main commercial and entertainment districts. Fitzrovia sits at an elevation of around 37 metres, close to the neighbouring areas of Somers Town, Bloomsbury, and Marylebone. Fitzrovia is characterized by its predominantly flat-type housing and a relatively high population density, with approximately 12,955 residents. Fitzrovia is also conveniently located near Westminster, being only 1.5 miles away from the city centre.

When we arrive with you around Fitzrovia: what happens

  • The responses shape the work, which is why our technicians ask before pricing: what was put in, how much of that, and if your engine has run.
  • The tainted mixture is drawn out of that tank.
  • Lines rinsed, filter cleared. Whatever remains after that is not the thing that caused the problem.
  • Priming follows, once clean diesel is in.
  • When it is fired up, we check it runs properly on new diesel.

Your car is then ready for you to drive away. We do all of it wherever your car has ended up, which means it never has to be taken to a garage, and if it has been spotted early, it is very uncommon for there to be lasting damage.

A distinct job: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Fitzrovia

Never start it: that first step stands whether what got in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is the fault itself. The protection a fuel system depends on is stripped away by petrol, which weakens your diesel. Rust and residue are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, since AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Both are ours. There's a separate Fitzrovia page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Fitzrovia?

Truthfully, no single figure fits on a page like this. The job differs. Here is what moves it:

  • This is the key one: whether your motor has been run, or driven.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, measured against how much that tank holds.
  • Whether it was petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can a van reach it and work there safely?

Tell us your vehicle, the amount and if it has run, and you'll get a straight answer instead of a range. Car at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is good for that.

Fitzrovia motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

I am on a forecourt in Fitzrovia. Can you drain the car on the spot?

Yes, and it's where a large portion of this work gets done. Routinely, provided the site agrees: Texaco, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that place is something our technicians answer there and then.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Whether the motor has run matters far more, though the ratio matters too, rather than the litres. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is needed is if that blend has been sucked through your fuel system.

I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Turn off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop. Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does move the problem out of that tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it remains recoverable a lot more frequently than people fear.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

No. Carried out properly, draining and purging is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one, which is another reason to leave the vehicle turned off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a different fault and it doesn't put back what petrol has diluted. The pump still has to cope with it, as that tank still has petrol in it later.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?

You don't need one. The vehicle is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a main dealer.

You, and your vehicle, still together?

Your engine remains off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, turn off, and no restarting it later. A still, cold vehicle is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from much more commonly than people expect.
