Fleetlands: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?
With your tank still carrying the fuel and the engine not yet run, nearly every job needs only a drain, so keep the motor off. That outcome is decided in the minutes straight after filling up, rather than by the amount that went in. Throughout Fleetlands and the rest of Hampshire, Petrol in Diesel drains the car and flushes it where it stands, whether at a roadside, on a driveway or at a forecourt. A single ring our way will be plenty: we shall explain what happens from here. Make this first.
Petrol in a diesel: what to do next
- Never fire it up — and do not trust it if it does start. This is the bit people get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol motor fed diesel typically just can't run, so the driver stops and the wear stops with them. A diesel filled with petrol generally starts, ticks over and moves off quite happily for several miles. It is not all right. It is eating into your fuel system as you drive.
- Leave the ignition off as well. Diesel does two roles: it burns, and before it combusts it protects that high-pressure pump and the injectors. Petrol does the first but not the second. Switching the car's ignition on is usually enough to prime your system, which pulls that petrol out of the tank and into precisely those parts.
- Never pour diesel on top to weaken it. A diesel fuel system does not cope with petrol by percentage the way that advice implies, and topping up removes nothing — it only leaves you a bigger tank of the same mixture. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.
- Sit tight if it is wise to. Hazards on, engine off, leave it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Bridgemary Way, anywhere — a tricky spot for us is better than a started motor, and nothing is quicker for us to deal with than a vehicle that never moved.
- Check where you are before phoning. A postcode that starts PO13 0, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise our van circles rather than turning up.
- What was put in, about how many litres, and whether the car has fired — the three answers shape the full job. Phone 0333 366 0103 then tell us.
How many miles you drove is what our technicians ask about, not how long your motor has been standing — and here's why. Diesel does two roles on its way through a motor: it combusts, and before burning it greases its high-pressure fuel pump and its injectors. Petrol manages the first only. So a rushed fill on the trip in, it dawning on you somewhere around eleven, and a diesel Volkswagen Golf sitting at Fareham since quarter past eight tells us those few miles were done with your pump working on a fluid drained of much of its protection. Ring us and keep it precisely where it is.
The call our engineers hope for runs like this: diesel Renault Clio, a few litres of unleaded, done a couple of miles, now shut off at Asda. What we're actually asking is how much fuel the pump has pulled — not how long ago it was.
Twenty to nine by Woodcot Primary School, running late, and the receipt in your hand reads unleaded. Hazards on, engine off, phone us. Three miles in the Skoda Octavia feels like nothing, but a diesel pump meters fuel on demand — and a rushed morning dash needs plenty.
Try the journey home from Hoeford Inn? Not a chance. It will fire up and it will drive off perfectly well, which is the issue — a diesel on a weakened tank behaves usually while grinding the components the fuel should be lubricating. Leave the Nissan Qashqai and phone.
That sluggishness is the fuel failing to build pressure fully, not the engine failing — and with no warning for it, motors in that position generally get driven a second time before anybody calls. Do not. A couple of streets is all it got: throttle gone soft, idle turned ragged, and a diesel BMW X1 now waiting close to Bridgemary Community Centre. Switch the vehicle off and ring us.
Forecourt drains for petrol in a diesel
A large share of this job ends up completed at a forecourt, because that is where it often begins. The drain typically takes place right there. Still on the forecourt at Asda? Given the site's permission, that is a place we work, and routinely.
The forecourt is the one place it can be halted before the engine has fired. The few seconds between checking the receipt and reaching for your key settle how much requires cleaning. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was fired up and driven to get there, so fuel was drawn from the tank, through your filter then into your high-pressure pump. That means the lines and the fuel filter need rinsing as well as your tank. It is not a calamity, and our engineers can still sort it out where your car is.
Push the car out of the way if the staff offer, and they generally will. The next customer gets through the pump, and that is worth doing. Starting the car over four vehicle lengths? No.
Can our technicians serve your corner of Fleetlands?
Fleetlands is a residential suburb, so our team go out to it and to the places around it on the same rounds: Woodcot, Bridgemary, Bedenham, Peel Common and Fareham.
If yours isn't on that list that does not mean we never come — there are separate pages for the majority of towns across Hampshire, and the ones mentioned above are just the closest neighbours. Phone to enquire rather than presuming — borders above all, and wherever the satnav can get wrong.
Use our map for the patch covered here. Your car doesn't need to travel to us. We work over the lot — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.
Fleetlands: stuck where you parked
Some drivers have no suitable place to pull in at all. If you noticed after setting off and ended up on the verge on Bridgemary Grove, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights going, that is a routine call for us instead of an unusual one.
Out of the car when it's not sensible to sit inside, beside it when it is. It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that's the trouble: start it up to reach somewhere handier and that blend goes further into the system with every mile travelled. Pressing on causes your car far more harm than a van driving out to a difficult spot, and that is no bother for us.
Already driven it? Petrol in a diesel over a few miles
This is where the M27 comes into it — under 3 miles away from Fleetlands. A drop in power, an uneven idle, smoke: those are the signs when they appear, rather than a neat stop — and a misfuelled diesel will usually get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.
Come off at the first sensible junction, turn off, and don't restart it to move it. Suppose the worst of that on a long trip. Anything close to the under 5 miles to the nearest city, and the mixture has been through the filter, through your pump, through your injectors. Mention it when you call. What our engineers bring alters.
About Fleetlands
Fleetlands is a coastal suburban area in Hampshire, situated near the city of Portsmouth and close to the neighbouring communities of Woodcot, Bridgemary, and Bedenham. Fleetlands lies at a low elevation of around 9 metres, reflecting its proximity to the sea. Fleetlands has a population of approximately 3755 people, predominantly living in semi-detached housing.
What our technicians do when our technicians reach you around Fleetlands
- Our engineers check what got in, how much, and whether the engine has run. The answers shape the work, which is why our engineers ask before giving a price.
- The polluted fuel is pulled from your tank.
- What is remaining in your system shouldn't be what caused the trouble, and so the lines get cleaned and the filter cleaned.
- We put clean diesel in and prime the system.
- We fire it up and confirm it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.
The car is then ready for you to drive away. There is no need to go to a garage at any point, since the work is all done where the car is, and when it is spotted early, permanent damage is very uncommon.
AdBlue in your diesel tank instead, around Fleetlands?
AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the opening instruction is unchanged — your motor stays off — while the issue beneath it is a different one altogether. Petrol weakens your diesel and takes away the lubrication the system depends on. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings rust and deposits.
Usually the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the full story lives on its own Fleetlands page. Both are ours to deal with.
How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Fleetlands?
One number would not be fair here, because this is not one job. These are the things that shift it:
- Whether your engine has been started or driven. This is the key one.
- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, measured against how much the tank can hold.
- The type of fluid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
- Where the car is, and whether a van can safely reach and work on it.
Tell us what your car is, how much went in, and if your engine has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range. Car at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is fine for that.
Petrol in diesel: frequent questions around Fleetlands
At a petrol station in Fleetlands, can you do a fuel drain there?
A good portion of this work happens there, so yes. Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Esso is somewhere we're frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you will hear if working there is possible.
A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?
It rests on the ratio instead of the litres, and far more on whether the engine has run. What decides how much work is needed is if that blend has been pulled through your fuel system — since though five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct situation from five in a full one, either way that is the question.
I put petrol in my diesel and drove the car. Now what?
Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the trouble out of that tank then into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays recoverable much more regularly than drivers fear.
Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?
No. Carried out properly, emptying and cleaning is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a dispute with one, which is another reason to leave the car switched off.
Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?
What petrol has diluted isn't replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a different fault. So no. Petrol stays in that tank afterwards, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no respite from it.
Main dealers and petrol in a diesel
Wherever your car is, our technicians drain and clean it there, so a trip to the main dealer doesn't come into it.
Is the car still with you?
Leave the engine shut off.
Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, turn off, and no restarting the vehicle after that. Cold, still, going nowhere: that is the best place to be in. Drivers fear this much more than they need to.
