Fleur-de-lis: Petrol in a Diesel Car? Here Is What Happens

Whatever you do, never switch your engine on, even for a moment, to move the car. Pause; leave the vehicle off. Petrol in a diesel that hasn't been run is typically a simple drain and a flush, done right where your car sits, and what you do in the coming few minutes decides that far more than anything else. What follows is the sequence from this point, wherever in Fleur-de-lis you are.

Petrol in a diesel, motor off — the first minute

Work through the following first, in this order.

  • Keys out of your ignition. Switching your ignition on can be enough to prime the system, while priming draws petrol out of the tank toward the components it harms. Leave the vehicle off completely.
  • Topping up with diesel seems like it thins the issue. It does not: nothing comes out, and that tank just carries more of the same.
  • Hazard lights on. If you are at all near moving traffic, make the vehicle simple to see before you do anything else.
  • Off the petrol pump by hand. At a forecourt, ask the staff to help you push the vehicle clear of the pump. Do not fire it up to move it, however short the distance.
  • Hold on to the till receipt. It shows which fuel was put in and roughly how much, which is the first thing we will ask.

Still driving when you noticed? Come off the M4 at the next exit if that is where you are, under 10 miles from Fleur-de-lis, and pull over somewhere safe rather than pushing on to the services. Then start at stage one.

Has it run yet? The fork in each Fleur-de-lis fuel drain

What happens after this rests on one answer, and only one.

If your engine has not run at all:

  • The petrol sits in your tank, and just there.
  • Draining and flushing, on the spot, is usually all of it.
  • This, here, is the best place to be in, and the whole reason stage one counts.

If it's been started, even for a moment:

  • From that tank, past your filter, into your lines: that's how far the petrol has travelled.
  • Run it farther and that petrol gets to the fuel injectors, having gone through your pump first.
  • The further it went, the larger this job — the lines, the filter, and sometimes more besides.

The reason the line falls there: diesel protects the high-pressure pump as well as your injectors as it flows through them, and petrol does not. Nothing is harmed by petrol that's only waiting in a tank. Petrol being pumped is wearing the components that shift the car.

Fleur-de-lis, petrol in a diesel: have these ready before you call

A technician that circles against a technician that finds you: a little preparation is the difference.

  • Your whereabouts: a postcode beginning NP12 3 works best.
  • A road name helps: Plas Road, say, or whichever street you've stopped in. A car park works too.
  • Car parks are located more easily by what they serve: say the one at Aldi, and it's simple.
  • The make and model of your car, and the fact it is a diesel.
  • Petrol or AdBlue? Say which. They are different jobs, and AdBlue has its own Fleur-de-lis page.
  • How much. Litres from the receipt, or how long the nozzle was in.
  • Whether it's run. And if it has, how far plus how hard.
  • Hire or company car? Some contracts want the owner's authorisation for the work, and getting it before we get there is faster than after.

Then call 0333 366 0103. If it can wait — your car is at home and going nowhere — does the trick too.

Fleur-de-lis fuel drain on its way? While you wait

The wait is where kindly meant help does the harm. Hold to these.

  • Wait with the car if it's safe where it is — but if it has stopped somewhere exposed, you come first: away from the traffic, waiting apart from it.
  • No one starts it. Not a passer-by being kind, not to check it is all right, not to roll it a couple of yards.
  • None of it takes the petrol back out — not two-stroke oil, not injector cleaner, not anything from the boot. So no additives.
  • Siphoning petrol into a can at the kerbside is risky — and it still leaves whatever fuel has already gone beyond your tank. Don't try a home-made drain.
  • Leave the ignition off — the windows and your radio included.

Van arrived? Your fuel drain, one step at a time

  • Fuel, amount, whether it has run: the answers set the job, and that is why you get a price after them instead of before.
  • Your tank is drained. The polluted mixture comes from the tank.
  • The lines are purged. If it ran, the petrol has shifted beyond that tank, and the fuel lines are holding it.
  • Then the fuel filter: changed where there is a usable one, cleared where there is not.
  • Bleeding your system follows after fresh diesel is in.
  • Starting it. When the fuel system is primed with clean diesel, our technicians fire it up and check it runs correctly.

Until it runs on clean diesel, we remain with it. Long-term damage is very uncommon when it has been spotted soon, so your car can go straight back to normal driving.

Back on the road around Fleur-de-lis after your fuel drain

  • Started on new diesel, it asks nothing unusual of you. Just drive normally.
  • The first miles are the test. A warning lamp, exhaust smoke, a rough idle or a hesitant throttle is your signal to stop then call us a second time.
  • Keep the paperwork. A hire company, a fleet manager or an insurer may ask what was done.
  • The handle's colour is not the guide to go by next time — the label on the pump is.
