Petrol in Diesel

Flockton Moor: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Don't start the motor. If the fuel is still in your tank and the motor has not yet turned over, a fuel drain is nearly always all it takes — and that is decided in the next few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled vehicles where they sit, all over Flockton Moor and the remainder of West Yorkshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive. Contact us before everything else starts, and you'll learn what happens from there.

Now what? Petrol in a diesel, in order

  • Never start it — and never trust it if it does start. That is the part people get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol motor fed diesel generally just will not run, and so the motorist stops and the damage stops with them. A diesel fed petrol normally starts, idles and moves off quite happily for a few miles. It isn't okay. It is wearing out that fuel system as you drive.
  • Two jobs, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps the high-pressure pump and injectors greased. Petrol only manages the one. That is why your ignition stays off as well — flick it on and you often prime your system, and that is petrol leaving the tank for exactly those parts.
  • Never thin it. Diesel tipped on top gets rid of nothing, so all you have is more of what was already there, since percentage is not how a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol. Super unleaded? Simply petrol. The type makes no difference.
  • A vehicle that has not shifted is the quickest one to sort, so remain where you are if you sensibly can. Parked on the verge on Long Lane? Hazards on, and leave the vehicle there. An awkward spot works for us better than a started engine.
  • Before you ring, work out your whereabouts. Anything closest to you with a label on it, plus a postcode starting WF4 4 — that's what settles whether our van shows up or circles.
  • Call 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three things — what got in, roughly how much, plus whether the engine has been run. Those responses determine everything that comes after.

Can petrol be pumped from your diesel on a forecourt?

Forecourts are where the work usually kicks off, and where a good share of it ends. If you are still on the forecourt at BP, that's normally where this drain takes place — our technicians work on garage forecourts routinely, with the owner's agreement.

The forecourt is the only spot this is caught before the engine has run. We can still deal with it where it stands, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, your car has been fired up and driven there, and that pulled fuel through the filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump, right from that tank. None of that is a calamity, but the flush then has to reach past the tank to the fuel lines and your filter, and the few seconds between reading your receipt and going for your key are what settle that.

Push the vehicle out of the way if the staff suggest it, and they generally will. The next motorist gets past the pump, and that's worth doing. Four vehicle lengths isn't worth a start.

Service in Flockton Moor

The same trips bring us to Cross Roads, Thorncliff, Lepton Edge, Crawshaw and Grange Moor as well as Flockton Moor, which is a small village.

If yours isn't on that list that does not mean we do not come — there are dedicated pages for nearly all places across West Yorkshire, and the ones mentioned above are merely the closest neighbours. Presuming is the mistake to resist, particularly on a border or anywhere a satnav goes wrong. Call us to enquire.

That map marks the area the page includes. Our technicians work at the roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks over all of it, and your vehicle does not need to move to us.

Put diesel in a petrol vehicle and mostly it will not run, and so the driver stops there and the wear stops with them. Reverse it — petrol into a diesel — and the engine fires up, idles and moves off as though nothing had happened, while the high-pressure fuel pump works without the lubrication the fuel is meant to be giving. That is the catch, and it is why the diesel Ford Focus will have felt completely normal coming back from Grange Moor Primary School. They all do. From the driver's seat there's nothing to caution you about, and so nothing tells you. Call us with roughly how far you travelled, and how hard; the second answer matters more than the first.

Here is what a job in the car park at Blacksmiths Arms normally looks like. We arrive at the vehicle, ask what was put in, approximately how much, and whether the engine has run since — these three answers decide much of the work. Then the polluted mixture comes out of the tank, the fuel lines get flushed, and the fuel filter comes off where your Mercedes C-Class has a serviceable one. New diesel goes in and the system is primed. Then our technicians fire it up, make sure it runs correctly, and you drive away.

Nothing is getting worse while it sits. Whatever the diesel Dacia Duster did on the way to Cock Hat Wood, it is doing none of that now: the pump isn't turning. So take your time — but do not drive the vehicle home to buy yourself any.

Switch off where you have stopped, and don't restart it to find somewhere better — close to St Bartholomew or anywhere at all. Clattering, an uneven idle, white smoke and a limp throttle are a wrongly fuelled diesel Audi A3 telling you what is wrong.

It got a couple of streets and stopped. The throttle went soft, the idle turned uneven, and your diesel BMW 1 Series is now sitting near Flockton Church. That sluggishness is your fuel failing to build pressure correctly not the engine failing — and since there is no dashboard light for it, motors in that position usually get driven a second time before anyone calls. Please don't. Switch it off then phone us.

Flockton Moor: broken down where you stopped

The chance to pull in anywhere sensible does not come to everybody. A normal call for us instead of an odd one: noticed after setting off, ended up along the verge of Windmill Hill Lane or at a lay-by with the hazards on.

Fine right there? Wait by it. Not fine? Move out and away from it. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls the mix further into the fuel system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why the engine does not get restarted to limp somewhere safer. A technician heading to a difficult location is no trouble for us, and it's much better for the vehicle than carrying on.

A few miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?

Here is where the M1 comes into it — under 5 miles from Flockton Moor. A drop in power, a lumpy idle, smoke: those are the signs when they appear, instead of a neat stop — and a misfilled diesel will often get you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong at all.

Get off at the next sensible junction, switch off, and never restart it to move it. It affects what we bring, so tell us when you call: on a longer trip — anything approaching the under 10 miles to the nearest city — take it the petrol has been through your filter, your pump and the injectors.

What follows when our engineers reach you around Flockton Moor

  • The responses shape the work, which is why our engineers ask before pricing: what went in, how much of that, and whether your motor has run.
  • Out goes the contaminated fuel.
  • Fuel lines are cleaned through and the fuel filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the system that caused any of this.
  • We put fresh diesel in and prime your system.
  • The motor is started and checked to make sure it runs properly on fresh diesel.

From there, you're ready to pull away. We do all of it wherever the car has come to a stop, which means it never has to go to a workshop, and if it has been noticed soon, it's very rare for there to be long-term damage.

A distinct job: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Flockton Moor

Do not fire it up: that first rule stands whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is the issue itself. Petrol thins your diesel and removes the protection your fuel system relies on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus residue.

Both are ours. There's a separate Flockton Moor page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost in Flockton Moor

What changes the price is listed below, because the job isn't one job and we cannot frankly put a single figure on this page.

  • Has it been run or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, compared with how much the tank holds.
  • The sort of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and whether working on it there's sensible for a technician.

A straight answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: the car, the amount, and whether it has run. Not time-critical, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then does this job.

Questions our engineers get about petrol in diesel in Flockton Moor

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Flockton Moor?

Yes, and it's where a large portion of this work gets done. Tell us which one you're at when you phone and we'll tell you if we can work there. With the station's permission we attend Gulf and the other forecourts locally regularly.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Litres are not the measure. Ratio is, and a lot more than either, it counts whether anything has been run. What settles how much work is needed is whether that blend has been pulled through your fuel system — since though five litres in an almost empty tank is a different case from five in a full one, either way that's the question.

I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then switch off and leave it off. It is recoverable a lot more commonly than motorists expect, even though driving is what moves the issue from the tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart it.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A drain then flush carried out properly is not a change and does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty. An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. It belongs to a separate issue from a different era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind replaces. Later on? Still petrol in your tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Wherever your car is, we drain and flush it there, so a drive to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

Still with the vehicle?

That engine stays off.

Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere safe, turn off, and let the vehicle remain that way. A still, cold vehicle is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from much more commonly than motorists assume.
