Folly: Petrol in a Diesel Car? Here Is What Happens

Stop. Engine off. Leave the vehicle that way — no second on, no shifting it anywhere. Drained then cleaned, right where it sits: that is usually all an unrun diesel with petrol in it takes. Whether it remains that simple rests on the minutes to come more than on anything else. From now on, in order, wherever you are in Folly:

Petrol in a diesel, engine off — the first minute

Do these first, in this sequence.

  • Ignition off, keys out. Turned on, your ignition can prime your system — and priming is what draws petrol out of your tank into the parts it harms.
  • Topping up with diesel sounds like it dilutes the trouble. It does not: nothing comes out, and your tank simply holds more of the same.
  • Hazards on. If you're anywhere near moving traffic, make your car simple to see before you do anything else.
  • Off the pump by hand. On a forecourt, ask the attendants to help you roll the car clear of the petrol pump. Do not start the vehicle to move it, however short the distance.
  • Hold on to your receipt: the grade and roughly how much are written on it, and they are what we ask for first.

On the Central Motorway East, under 10 miles from Folly, the next exit is the location to come off; anywhere, the first sensible place to stop. Don't press on to the services. Then go back to step one.

Each Folly fuel drain starts here: has the engine run?

What comes after this turns on one answer, and just one.

If your engine has not run at all:

  • Just the tank has petrol in it for now.
  • Where the car stands is usually where the work is done: a drain, then a flush.
  • No position is better, and it's why the first step counts so much.

If the motor has been run, even briefly:

  • Petrol has been drawn out of the tank, past the fuel filter and into the lines.
  • On a longer run it has got to your high-pressure pump and your injectors.
  • The job expands with the miles — lines purged, filter dealt with, occasionally more.

Diesel keeps the high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel injectors oiled as it goes through them. Petrol gives them nothing, and that's why the line is drawn there. A tank of petrol, left still, hurts nothing. Pump the petrol, though, and it grinds down the very parts that move it.

What to have prepared when you call about petrol in a diesel from Folly

Whether the technician goes round or finds you comes down to a little preparation.

  • NE40 4 and the remainder of the postcode is the ideal way to begin telling us where you are.
  • Wherever you have parked, the road's name is useful — whether that's The Pines or somewhere else — and so does the name of a car park.
  • Describe a car park by what it serves — the one at Greenside Local, for example — and it's much easier to find.
  • The car. Make, model, plus that it is a diesel.
  • Which got in counts: AdBlue is a separate job from petrol, and Folly has a page for it. So tell us.
  • The quantity: the receipt's litres, or otherwise how long you held the nozzle in.
  • Has it run? If so, say how far it got, and how it was driven.
  • Whose car it is. Some hire or company contracts want the owner to approve this work, and that's quicker settled before our engineers get there than after.

Ring 0333 366 0103 once you've got that ready — or, if the car is at home, going nowhere, use .

Folly fuel drain on its way? While you wait

During the wait, the harm comes from kindly meant help — so these matter.

  • Stay with your car if it's safe where it is — but if it has stopped somewhere dangerous, you come first: away from the traffic, waiting apart from it.
  • A helpful passer-by doesn't fire it up. Nor does anybody checking it still works, or rolling it a couple of yards.
  • Additives stay in your boot. Injector cleaner and two-stroke oil take none of that petrol out once more.
  • Clearing it yourself is not the answer: a can of siphoned petrol on a verge is a danger, and the fuel beyond the tank stays put regardless.
  • Leave the ignition off — your windows and your radio too.

The fuel drain, step by step, once our van arrives

  • Our quote comes after three questions, not before them — what was put in, how much, and if it's run — since those replies shape this job.
  • Out of your tank comes the tainted blend: that tank is cleared.
  • Flushing your lines comes next, because a motor that ran has petrol past that tank, in the lines themselves.
  • The filter is seen to. Cleared, or replaced where your car has a usable one.
  • Fresh diesel goes in, then the fuel system is primed.
  • Starting the car. Once the system is bled with clean diesel, we fire it up and make sure it runs correctly.

The car has clean diesel running through it before our engineers go. When it has been noticed soon, permanent damage is very uncommon, and the car goes back to normal use straight away.

Folly, after the fuel drain: back on the road

  • Started on clean diesel, it asks nothing special of you. Just drive normally.
  • Give the first miles your attention. Smoke appearing, a warning light coming on, the idle going lumpy or your throttle hesitating: pull over then call us back.
  • An insurer, a fleet manager or a hire firm may ask what was carried out, and so keep your paperwork.
  • Next time, read the petrol pump. The label, not the colour of the handle.
