Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Ford? Don't Start It

Never fire up your engine. While the petrol is still sitting in your tank and your engine has not yet been started, a tank drain is almost always all it takes — and that gets decided in the next few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled vehicles where they are, throughout Ford and the remainder of Merseyside, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive. A single call to us will be plenty: our technicians shall tell you what follows next. Make it first.

What to do now about petrol in a diesel

  • Feed a petrol engine diesel and it will usually refuse to run at all, so the driver stops there and so does the damage. Feed a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it idles, it moves off — all right for a few miles. Motorists have that backwards, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So do not start it. And if started, don't depend on it: that fuel system is grinding as you drive.
  • Two tasks, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps the injection pump and injectors lubricated. Petrol only handles the one. Which is why your ignition is left off also — flick it on and you often prime the system, and that is petrol leaving that tank for just those parts.
  • Don't dilute it. Diesel put on top gets rid of nothing, and so all you get is more of what was already there, because percentage is not how a diesel fuel system accepts petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The grade makes no difference.
  • Stay still if it is sensible to. Hazards on, motor off, leave the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Gorsey Lane, anywhere — an odd place for us beats a started motor, and nothing is quicker for us to handle than a motor that never moved.
  • Get your whereabouts prepared before you phone. A postcode starting L21 0 and whatever is next to you with a sign on it is the difference between a van turning up and a van circling.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Anticipate three things — what was put in, about how many litres, and whether the engine has been started. Your replies shape whatever comes after.

Pump-side draining for petrol in a diesel

Forecourts are where the job usually kicks off, and where a large portion of it closes. We operate on garage forecourts regularly, with the owner's agreement, and so if you are still at the nearest petrol station that is typically where this drain happens.

At the forecourt, the mistake gets stopped with your motor never started, and no place else does that. The few seconds between checking your receipt and reaching for the keys decide how much needs cleaning. Everywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the car was switched on and moved to get there, so fuel was pulled from your tank, through the filter and into your high-pressure pump. That means your lines and the filter need cleaning as well as your tank. It's not a calamity, and our technicians can still put it right where the car stands.

Staff will generally help out pushing it away from the petrol pump, which lets the next motorist get past. Take the assistance. Cranking the car to move four vehicle lengths is not.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Ford

Diesel Renault Megane. A couple of litres of unleaded. Done a couple of miles. Turned off now, outside Tesco. That's the enquiry we like, because the point underneath it is about quantity through your pump not hours on the clock.

Your pump isn't turning, and so whatever the diesel Dacia Duster did on the way to Ford Lane Community Garden, none of that is happening now. Nothing is getting worse while it stands. Take your time over this — but never drive it home to buy any.

Leave the BMW 5 Series close to Our Lady Queen Of Peace Roman Catholic Church then ring us. We are blunt about not driving on since a wearing pump sheds, and what it sheds passes on with the fuel to your injectors downstream.

Petrol in a diesel does its harm as a share, which is the reason our technicians ask at all: the same few litres waiting in an almost empty tank make a far stronger mix than they would in a full one. And petrol is rated on how well it resists igniting under pressure — the opposite of what a diesel needs — so a stronger mixture rattles more, smokes more, goes flatter. None of which means you need an answer ready. Nearly no one knows how full your tank was in a car picked up two days ago, and we work that out on site. Do ring the hire or company firm first, though: some contracts want them to approve the work, and that is far quicker settled before than after. Then ring us about the Vauxhall Astra by Litherland Sports Park.

By now that tank is the least of that. Run a diesel and the blend goes into the filter, into the fuel lines, into the pump, into its rail — and none of that leaves with the tank contents. A diesel Citroen C3 that got near St Paul's Church needs its system cleared. Clearing isn't the same thing.

Can our engineers serve your end of Ford?

Ford is a residential suburb, and our team head out to the town and to the areas by it on those same rounds: Buckley Hill, Litherland, Waterloo Park, Netherton and Great Crosby.

If yours is not on the list it does not mean we do not come — there are dedicated pages for the majority of towns in Merseyside, and the ones named above are simply the nearest neighbours. Contact us to enquire rather than guessing — borders above all, and anywhere your satnav might get wrong.

The patch this page includes is on our map. All of it is territory we cover: a kerbside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You do not bring the car anywhere.

Ford: stranded where you stopped

Not everyone has a decent spot to pull over. If you noticed after setting off and finished up by the verge beside Lonsdale Close, or at a lay-by somewhere with your hazards flashing, that is a common call for us and not an odd one.

Safe there? Stay by it. Not okay? Move out and clear of it. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls that blend further into your fuel system — and oblige it often will, which is why the engine doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere handier. Carrying on causes the car far more harm than a technician heading out to an awkward place, and that is no bother for us.

Run it already? Pull in, then read this

The M57 is the road which matters now, and it runs under 3 miles from Ford. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently do both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is seldom a clean stop. Power drains away, the idle gets rough, and there may be smoke.

Never start it to move it. Come off at the first sensible exit and turn off. Long trip? Anything near the under 10 miles to the closest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that reached by the mixture. Say that on the call, as it changes what goes in the van.

All about Ford

Ford is a suburban area in Merseyside, situated near the coast and approximately 5 miles north of Liverpool. Ford has a relatively low elevation of 27 metres and is surrounded by other local areas such as Buckley Hill and Litherland. Ford is characterized by its predominantly terraced housing stock, which reflects the typical architectural style of the region. Ford is also close to Waterloo Park, a nearby green space.

What happens when we arrive with you in Ford

  • We ask first, quote after. What was put in? How much? Has your engine run? Those answers change what the work really is.
  • The contaminated mixture is drawn from your tank.
  • Fuel lines are rinsed through and your filter cleared, leaving nothing in the fuel system that caused any of this.
  • Bleeding your system follows, once fresh diesel is in.
  • It is fired up with fresh diesel in it, and our engineers confirm that it is running properly.

From there, you are ready to pull away. Our technicians do everything wherever the vehicle has ended up, which means it never needs to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been caught quickly, it's very unusual for there to be long-term damage.

AdBlue in the diesel tank instead, in Ford?

Do not fire it up: that opening rule holds whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is this issue itself. Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and takes away the lubrication the fuel system relies on. Corrosion and residue are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, because AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Often the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the full story sits on its own Ford page. Both are ours to handle.

What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost around Ford

Honestly, no single price fits on a page like this. The job differs. Here's what moves it:

  • This is the key one: whether your engine has been run, or driven.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
  • Which was put in: petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can a technician get to it and work there sensibly?

Tell us what the vehicle is, how much got in, and if the motor has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range. Not time-critical, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

Petrol in diesel queries from Ford drivers

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Ford?

Plenty of what we do takes place nowhere else. So yes. Our technicians visit Shell and the other forecourts nearby regularly, with the site's agreement — tell us which one you're at when you phone and we will tell you if our technicians can work there.

A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Proportion settles it instead of litres — and more than either, whether the motor has run. What determines how much work is required is whether that mixture has been drawn through the fuel system — because though five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one, either way that's the query.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove the vehicle. What next?

Stop somewhere safe, turn off, and keep the vehicle off. Driving is what takes the problem from that tank into your pump and injectors — but it's salvageable far more often than drivers fear, and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart it.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

No. Carried out properly, emptying and purging is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. What is likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for your engine to remain off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

Two-stroke oil solves a separate issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol thinned. No. After that? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

There is no need to bring it to a franchised dealer, since our technicians drain and clean the car wherever it is.

Standing next to it?

Shut off is how the car remains.

If you have already driven the vehicle, stop somewhere safe, turn it off and keep it off. Cold, parked, going nowhere: that is the best position to be in. People fear this far more than they need to.
