Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Fordham?

Don't turn on the motor. While the fuel is still inside the tank and your engine has not turned over, a tank drain is almost always all it needs — and that's determined in the next few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled cars where they stand, across Fordham and the remainder of Essex, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive. Call us and then our engineers shall show you what happens from here before you attempt anything else.

What to do first about petrol in a diesel

  • Give a petrol motor diesel and it will normally refuse to run at all, and so the motorist stops there and so does the wear. Give a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it idles, it pulls away — fine enough for several miles. Drivers have that reversed, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So don't crank it. And if started, never rely on it: the fuel system is wearing down as you drive.
  • Two jobs, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps the high-pressure pump and injectors lubricated. Petrol only handles the one. Which is why the ignition is left off also — flick it on and you usually prime the system, and that is petrol leaving that tank for precisely those components.
  • That advice assumes a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol by percentage. It doesn't. Pour diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you end with is a larger tank of the same mix. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.
  • Stay still if it's wise to. Hazards on, ignition off, leave the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Quilters Green, anywhere — an awkward spot for us is better than a started engine, and nothing is quicker for us to sort out than a motor that never shifted.
  • Keep your location prepared before you dial. A postcode that starts CO6 3 and whatever is nearest to you with a label on it is the difference between our van turning up and our van circling.
  • Three facts settle the full call-out: the liquid you put in, the approximate quantity of it, and if anything has been going since. The line is 0333 366 0103.

The drive in is what pulled diluted diesel through your pump. Standing still has drawn nothing. Petrol in a diesel Skoda Octavia, parked outside Chappel & Wakes Colne all day, rests inert in the tank whilst it waits. Phone us first — before your keys go in.

If you have put petrol in your diesel BMW 3 Series around Fordham and you are now stranded outside East of England Co-op with a boot full of shopping, ring us. Never start it again to exit the bay. We will get to you, drain that tank, clean the fuel lines then put clean diesel in so you can get home. A mile or so at light throttle draws little fuel, so these are often the straightforward cases.

Pull over somewhere safe, switch off then phone us. Normal on the way out to Fordham Hall Estate, sluggish on the way back? Then look at your tank. Petrol dilutes diesel; thinner fuel seeps past the tightly fitted components that build injection pressure; and the farther your diesel Ford Focus went, the less of that pressure it held.

Off the forecourt, receipt read, a few hundred yards, left near Fordham Village Hall. For a diesel Mercedes E-Class whose motor has turned, that's about the best version there is. Ring us, then let it stand with the ignition alone. Short helps, genuinely — but a start is a start and a drive is a drive, and the fuel filter has had thinned fuel through it, and so has the pump. Which is why the fuel lines get purged and not just that tank drained.

The filter, the fuel lines, the pump and its rail: that's where the blend is once a diesel has run, and it does not come back out with that tank contents. So the tank isn't where most of the trouble rests by this point, and a diesel Volkswagen Touran that made it by West Bergholt, Old Church needs your system purged instead of emptied.

Pump-side drains for petrol in a diesel

A large portion of this job gets done at the pump, because that's where it mostly begins. We work on garage forecourts routinely, with the owner's consent, so if you're still at Esso that is generally where the drain happens.

At a forecourt, the mistake is stopped with the motor never started, and nowhere else does that. Our technicians can still deal with it where it sits, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a drive or in a lay-by, the vehicle has been fired up and moved there, and that pulled fuel through your filter and into the high-pressure pump, all the way from the tank. None of that is a calamity, though the flush then has to go past that tank to the fuel lines and your filter, and the few seconds between checking the receipt and reaching for the keys are what decide that.

Away from the petrol pump, the next motorist can get past — so yes, let the attendants help you roll the vehicle. Worth it. Cranking it for four vehicle lengths? Never.

Can our engineers cover your end of Fordham?

Fordham is a rural village, and so our technicians go out to the town and to anywhere by it on the same runs: Fordstreet, Hemps Green, Rotchfords, Fordham Heath and Gallows Green.

We still come. The places above are only the immediate neighbours, and a page exists for the majority of places in Essex, and so an absence from the list isn't an absence from the coverage. Close to a boundary, or anywhere your phone can't find? Phone to enquire rather than guessing.

The area the page covers appears on our map. Every bit of it is ground our engineers cover: a kerbside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You don't drive your vehicle anywhere.

Roadside stops across Fordham

Some people get no safe place to stop at all. If you worked it out after setting off and landed along the verge of Church Road, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights going, that's a normal call for us and not an odd one.

Wait by the car while it's wise to wait inside, yet out of the car when it's not. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags that mixture further into your fuel system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why your motor does not get restarted to limp somewhere handier. A van heading to an awkward location is no trouble for us, and it is much better for your car than driving on.

Already run it? Petrol in a diesel over a couple of miles

Here is where the local M11 counts, under 25 miles out of Fordham. A misfilled diesel will usually get you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong, while the signs when they appear are generally lost power, a lumpy idle and smoke instead of a neat stop.

Get off at the next sensible exit, turn off, and don't start the vehicle to move it. It changes what our engineers bring, and so say so when you call: on a longer trip — anything near the under 5 miles to the closest city — assume the petrol has been through the filter, the pump and your injectors.

What our technicians do when we arrive with you around Fordham

  • Our technicians find out what got in, how much, and whether the engine has run. The replies change the work, which is why we ask before quoting.
  • The tank gets cleared completely.
  • Lines purged, filter cleared. Whatever is left later isn't the thing that started the problem.
  • Priming follows, once clean diesel is in.
  • Our technicians start the car and confirm it runs correctly on new diesel.

After that it is ready to set off. There's no need to go to a garage at any point, as the work is all done where the car is, and when it's noticed early, permanent damage is very rare.

Fordham AdBlue removal is a distinct problem

The fault is not the same, though the first rule is — never crank it — if what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol. The protection a fuel system depends on gets stripped away by petrol, which weakens your diesel. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus deposits.

Our technicians handle both, and AdBlue removal around Fordham has its own page with the full story — including why it is often the more significant of the two.

What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain costs in Fordham

One price would not be fair here, because this is not one job. These are the things that move it:

  • This is the big one: whether the engine has been run, or driven.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
  • Whether it's petrol or AdBlue.
  • Whether a technician can sensibly get to the vehicle and work on it, which hinges on where your car is.

A clear answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: your car, the quantity, and whether it has run. For your car at home that's going nowhere and is not pressing, is fine too.

Fordham drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Fordham?

Plenty of what we do gets done nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you are at when you phone and we will tell you if our engineers can work there. With the owner's agreement we visit Sainsbury's and the other forecourts nearby all the time.

A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Proportion settles it instead of litres — and more than either, whether the engine has run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is required is whether that mixture has been drawn through your fuel system.

I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Turn off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop. It is recoverable far more frequently than drivers fear, even though driving is what moves the trouble from the tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain and flush done to a correct standard, which is no change at all. A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a different fault and it does not restore what petrol has thinned. After that? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

No. We drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is, so there is no need to take it to a franchised dealer.

You, and your vehicle, still together?

The motor remains off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, switch off, and no restarting the car later on. Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that's the best position to be in. People fear this a lot more than they need to.

Emptying misfilled cars, Fordham and the rest of Essex, wherever they are. Roadside. Forecourt. Home.
