Petrol in a Diesel Car in Forge Side: What Happens Now

Not for a second, and not for moving it: your engine remains off. Stop there. Hasn't been run? Then petrol in a diesel tends to be a straightforward drain-and-flush job wherever the car has stopped — and no other factor settles that as much as the next few minutes do. Wherever you are in Forge Side, here is the order things run from now.

Petrol in a diesel, motor off — the first minute

Do these before anything else, in this order.

  • Pull your keys out. Even your ignition on its own can prime the system, drawing petrol out of your tank to exactly the components it damages, and so keep it alone completely.
  • A bigger tank of the same mixture is all topping up leaves you, because it removes nothing. So no more diesel.
  • Hazard lights on. If you are anywhere near moving traffic, make your car easy to see before you do anything else.
  • The staff will normally help you roll it away from the petrol pump. Let them, and move it by hand — not under your engine, even for a couple of yards.
  • Which fuel, and roughly how much? Your receipt replies that, and that's where our questions start. Do not throw it away.

On the M4, under 15 miles from Forge Side, the next exit is the place to leave the car; elsewhere, the first sensible place to stop. Don't press on to the services. Then go back to step one.

Each Forge Side fuel drain starts here: has your motor run?

One answer is what everything after this stage depends on.

Engine never run at all?

  • The petrol is still in your tank and nowhere else.
  • A drain and flush, on the spot, is usually all of that.
  • No spot is better, and it's why the first stage counts so much.

Run at all, even for a second:

  • From your tank, through the fuel filter, into the lines: that's how far that petrol has travelled.
  • Run it farther and that petrol reaches the fuel injectors, having gone through your fuel pump first.
  • The job grows with the mileage — lines cleaned, filter seen to, sometimes more.

Diesel keeps the high-pressure fuel pump and your injectors protected as it goes through them. Petrol gives them nothing, and that's why the line is drawn there. Petrol sitting in a tank damages nothing. The components that move it are grinding the moment petrol is being pumped.

Fuel drain of a diesel car in Forge Side, step by step

Forge Side, petrol in a diesel: have these ready before you call

A little planning is the difference between a van that finds you and a technician that circles.

  • Your location: a postcode beginning NP4 9 works best.
  • Wherever you have parked, the road's name helps — whether that's Allgood Avenue or somewhere else — and so does the name of a car park.
  • Name a car park by what it serves — the one outside Co-op Food, for instance — and it is much quicker to find.
  • The vehicle. Make, model, plus that it's a diesel.
  • Petrol or AdBlue? Say which. They are different jobs, and AdBlue has a separate Forge Side page.
  • The amount: your receipt's litres, or otherwise how long you held the nozzle in.
  • Whether it's run. And if it has, how far and how heavily.
  • Hire or company car? Some agreements need the owner's go-ahead for the work, and getting it before our engineers turn up is faster than afterwards.

Then phone 0333 366 0103. If it can wait — the car is at home and going nowhere — works as well.

The wait for a Forge Side fuel drain, and what to do in it

The wait is where kindly meant help does the damage. Stick to these.

  • Safety before the vehicle. If it has stopped somewhere dangerous, get yourself away from the traffic and wait away from it. If it is safe where it is, stay with it.
  • Not to roll it a few yards, not to check it is all right, not as a passer-by's favour: nobody starts it.
  • No additives. Two-stroke oil, injector cleaner, anything from your boot — none of that gets that petrol back out.
  • A home-made drain misses the fuel already gone beyond your tank, and siphoning petrol by the road is dangerous too.
  • Not for the radio, not for the windows: your ignition remains off.

Van arrived? The fuel drain, one step at a time

  • Fuel, quantity, whether it has run: those replies set the job, and that is why you get a price after them rather than before.
  • Your tank is cleared. The tainted mix comes out of the tank.
  • Petrol that has shifted beyond that tank travels in the lines if it ran, and the fuel lines are cleaned to clear it.
  • Where the car has a usable filter, it is swapped; otherwise, cleared.
  • The system is primed with fresh diesel.
  • The start. With new diesel in and the fuel system primed, it is fired up and tested to be sure it runs smoothly.

Until it runs on clean diesel, our technicians remain with it. It's very uncommon for a vehicle caught soon to be left with permanent damage, and normal driving starts again at once.

Back on the road in Forge Side after your fuel drain

  • Once it's been started on clean fuel, there is nothing unusual to do: drive normally.
  • Give the first miles your attention. Smoke appearing, a warning light coming on, the idle going lumpy or the throttle stumbling: pull over then ring us back.
  • Hold on to the documents. A hire company, a fleet manager or an insurer may ask what was done.
  • Check the label on the petrol pump next time, not the colour of its handle.
