Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Fosse Park?

With the tank still holding the petrol and the engine not yet turned over, nearly every job needs only a drain, so leave the engine off. That result is settled in the minutes immediately after filling up, rather than by the amount that got in. All over Fosse Park and the rest of Leicestershire, Petrol in Diesel drains the car and cleans it where it stands, whether by a roadside, on a driveway or at a forecourt. Contact us and we will show you what comes after that before you attempt much else.

Your first five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • Never start the vehicle — and do not believe it when it runs. That is the bit motorists get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol motor given diesel usually just can't run, so the driver stops and the harm halts with them. A diesel fed petrol normally starts, idles and drives away without complaint for a few miles. It isn't fine. It's wearing your fuel system as you drive.
  • Leave your ignition alone as well. Diesel has two tasks: it burns, and before it combusts it greases the injection pump and its injectors. Petrol does the first and not the second. Flicking your ignition on is commonly sufficient to prime that system, which pulls this petrol out of the tank then into just those parts.
  • Do not tip diesel on top to thin it. A diesel fuel system won't cope with petrol by percentage in the way that advice suggests, and topping up clears nothing — it just gives you a larger tank of the same mix. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.
  • Wait where you are if you safely can. A car that has never moved is the simplest one to sort out, and we'd sooner travel to a difficult place than have it started. If you're stopped on the verge on Grove Farm Triangle, turn those hazards on then keep the car there.
  • Before you ring, have your position. Anything next to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode starting LE19 1 — that's what settles whether the van turns up or circles.
  • What went in, approximately how much, plus if your car has fired — those three details decide the entire job. Ring 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Tonight, please, not Monday. Driving it home is the only thing not to do: a commute has forced real quantity through your pump already, petrol-thinned diesel and plenty of it, and the return trip would roughly double the figure to no purpose. The Volkswagen Passat can sit at Narborough perfectly happily. Ring from the platform if handier; standing over us whilst our engineers work isn't required.

Put diesel in a petrol car and usually it will not run, and so the person stops there and the harm stops with them. Reverse it — petrol into a diesel — and the thing starts, idles and moves off as though nothing had happened, while the high-pressure fuel pump works without the protection your fuel is supposed to be giving. That's the snag, and it is why the diesel Audi A4 will have seemed entirely ordinary coming back from Millfield L.E.A.D. Academy. They do. From behind the wheel there's nothing to alert you about, and so nothing alerts you. Call us with approximately how far you went, and how hard; the second one matters more than the first.

Here's the whole mechanism. Diesel needs enough body to seal the close clearances it goes through, and petrol takes that away. That is it. Which accounts for the usual The Osiers Nature Area call — a diesel Vauxhall Astra, out there without complaint and back down on power, lumpy at idle, possibly a bit of smoke. Injection systems work hydraulically as well as chemically, so your fuel has to hold pressure and not just burn; diluted, it escapes past those gaps rather than building, and delivery comes poorer, later, less even than the motor was built about. Not a failing motor, though. Fuel that has stopped behaving like diesel. Put that right and it stops.

Rattling? Uneven idle? White smoke, throttle gone limp? That's your misfuelled Ford Fiesta, a diesel, saying what's wrong with it. Stop wherever you happen to be, maybe close to Marks & Spencer, then leave the restarting alone.

Fixed and starting are not the same thing, and the difference is your system: our engineers flush it, and take your filter off where there is a workable one. Compare that with the certain tip you will get — drain the vehicle, refill with new diesel. Only half right. Do precisely that to a diesel Volvo XC60 by Grove Park Globe and it will start, which is exactly why the tip sounds sensible. Then the engine draws the petrol left behind in the filter, and in the feed lines, straight back through your pump, because draining a tank does nothing whatever about fuel that has already left it. Ring us instead.

Clearing petrol from the diesel at the forecourt

A good portion of the job ends up completed at a pump, as that is where it often begins. Our technicians work on petrol station forecourts routinely, with the owner's permission, and so if you're still at Sainsbury's that is typically where this drain gets done.

A filling station is the only location this is caught before your engine has run. The few seconds between checking the receipt and going for the keys decide how much requires rinsing. Anywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was started and driven to get there, so fuel was pulled from that tank, through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure pump. That means the lines and the fuel filter need cleaning as well as the tank. It's not a catastrophe, and we can still sort it out where your car stands.

Wheel the vehicle out of the way if the staff suggest it, and they generally will. The next customer gets through the petrol pump, and that is worth doing. Shifting it four spaces doesn't merit starting the engine.

Places our vans cover in Fosse Park

Fosse Park is a residential suburb, so our vans go out to it and to the places around it on the usual runs: Glen Parva, Rowley Fields, Aylestone, Enderby and King Street Buildings.

If yours isn't on the list that does not mean we do not come — there are pages for most locations around Leicestershire, and the ones mentioned above are just the nearest neighbours. Presuming is the thing to avoid, particularly on a boundary or somewhere your phone struggles. Contact us to check.

The area the page includes is on the map. Your vehicle does not need to travel to us. We operate throughout all of that — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Fosse Park: stuck wherever you stopped

A chance to pull over somewhere safe doesn't fall to everyone. Hazards flashing at a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge beside Lubbesthorpe Way because you realised after setting off — our engineers take that call so often that it is the normal kind.

Clear of the car if it is not safe to wait inside, by it if it is. Don't start it up to reach a safer place. It will go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging draws that blend deeper into the fuel system. Pressing on causes the car far more harm than our van driving out to an inconvenient spot, and that is no trouble for us.

Already driven it? Petrol in a diesel after a couple of miles

The M1 is the road which counts now, and it lies under a mile from Fosse Park. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will usually manage both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is rarely a clean stop. Power drains away, your idle turns uneven, and there may be some smoke.

Get off at the first sensible junction, switch off, and never start it to move it. On a longer trip — anything near the under 5 miles to the closest city — assume the petrol has been through the fuel filter, your pump and your injectors, and say so when you call. It affects what we bring.

Fosse Park itself

Fosse Park is a suburban area located on the outskirts of Leicester, near the River Soar, with a mix of residential and commercial properties. Fosse Park sits at an elevation of 66 metres, close to the nearby suburbs of Glen Parva and Rowley Fields. Fosse Park is characterized by its predominantly detached housing stock, reflecting the area's residential development. Fosse Park is situated approximately 3.2 miles from Leicester city centre, making it a convenient location for commuters.

What comes next when our technicians get to you in Fosse Park

  • We check what was put in, how much, and if your motor has run. The replies alter the work, which is why our engineers ask before giving a price.
  • The tainted fuel comes out of the tank.
  • Lines purged, filter cleared. Whatever is left later isn't the thing that started the trouble.
  • Fresh diesel goes in, and then the system gets bled.
  • It is started with fresh diesel in it, and we make sure that it is running correctly.

At that point it is ready to pull away. There's no need to go to a garage at any stage, as the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it's spotted quickly, permanent damage is very unusual.

AdBlue in the diesel tank instead, around Fosse Park?

The issue is not the same, though the first step is — do not crank it — if what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol. Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and removes the protection the fuel system depends on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus build-up.

We deal with both, and AdBlue removal around Fosse Park has its own page with the full story — including why it's frequently the more significant of the two.

Fosse Park prices for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

One number would not be fair here, as this is not one job. These are the things that change it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, compared with how much the tank takes.
  • The sort of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where the vehicle is, and whether a technician can sensibly get to and work on it.

Tell us what the vehicle is, how much went in, and if the engine has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range. If it is not pressing — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Petrol in diesel: common questions in Fosse Park

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Fosse Park?

Much of what our engineers do takes place nowhere else. So yes. Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Asda is somewhere we are frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you will hear whether working there's possible.

Is there a sensible quantity of petrol in a diesel?

It rests on the ratio instead of the litres, and far more on whether the motor has run. What settles how much work is needed is if that mixture has been drawn through your fuel system — since although five litres in an almost empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one, either way that's the question.

Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What then?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Driving takes the trouble along — out of the tank, into the pump and injectors. People fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really useful thing left to you isn't restarting the vehicle.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

No. Carried out properly, emptying and rinsing is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. It belongs to a distinct issue from a separate era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind restores. After that? Still petrol in that tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

No. Our engineers drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is, so there is no need to take it to a main dealer.

Waiting next to it?

Do not switch your engine on again.

If you have already driven the vehicle, pull in somewhere sensible, turn it off then keep it off. A still, cold vehicle is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from much more regularly than people expect.

At the kerbside, on the forecourt or at home — call-out fuel draining in Fosse Park and throughout Leicestershire.
