Petrol in a Diesel Car in Framfield: What Happens Now

Whatever you do, don't switch your motor on, even briefly, to move the car. Stop; leave the car off. Drained then cleaned, just where it is: that is generally all an unrun diesel with petrol in it takes. Whether it remains that simple depends on the minutes to come far more than on everything else. Here's the order of things from here, anywhere you are in Framfield.

Engine off: minute one with petrol in a diesel

Go through the following in sequence, first.

  • Take your keys out. Even the ignition by itself can prime the system, drawing petrol out of the tank to exactly the components it damages, and so leave it off wholly.
  • Topping up with diesel seems like it thins the trouble. It does not: nothing comes out, and your tank simply holds more of the same.
  • Hazards on. If you are at all near moving traffic, make the vehicle easy to see before you do anything else.
  • The staff will normally help you push it clear of the pump. Let them, and roll it by hand — never under your engine, even for a few yards.
  • Hold on to your receipt. It shows which fuel got in plus roughly how much, which is the first thing we'll ask.

On the M23, under 25 miles from Framfield, the next junction is the spot to come off; anywhere, the first safe place to stop. Do not press on to the services. Then go back to step one.

The fork in each Framfield fuel drain: has it run yet?

Everything after this stage rests on one answer.

Motor never run at all?

  • Nowhere but that tank: that is where the petrol still is.
  • The work is a simple drain and a flush, usually done where your car stands.
  • Step one counts for exactly this reason: it's the best spot to be in.

Run at all, however briefly:

  • Petrol has been pulled from your tank, through the fuel filter and into your lines.
  • A longer run carries it right through to the high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel injectors.
  • The job grows with the miles — lines flushed, filter sorted, occasionally more.

Why the line falls there: diesel protects your high-pressure pump as well as your injectors as it passes through them, and petrol does not. In your tank, left alone, petrol harms nothing. Petrol being pumped is grinding down the components that move it.

Framfield, petrol in a diesel: have these prepared before you call

Whether the van goes round or finds you depends on a little planning.

  • Where you have stopped. A postcode beginning TN22 5 is the ideal place to start.
  • Give the street — Gatehouse Lane or wherever you have pulled up — or the car park.
  • What a car park serves is the quickest way to find it, so say the landmark — like the one outside Co-op Food.
  • Say what the vehicle is — make, model — and check it's diesel.
  • What was put in. Petrol, or AdBlue. AdBlue is a different job with its own page for Framfield, and so tell us which.
  • Roughly how much — in litres from your receipt, or by how long the nozzle stayed in.
  • Whether it's run. And if it has, how far plus how heavily.
  • Settle who owns the vehicle ahead of when our technicians get there: some hire and company contracts want the owner to authorise the work, and doing it faster first.

Phone 0333 366 0103 then. Writing to is fine as well if it can wait, with your car left at home, going nowhere.

Waiting for a fuel drain around Framfield: what to do

During the wait, the damage comes from well-intended help — which is why these matter.

  • Your safety comes before the vehicle. Somewhere exposed? Get clear of the traffic then wait away from it. Safe where it sits? Stay with it.
  • Nobody — however helpful — starts it, whether to see if it runs or to move the vehicle a short way.
  • Anything from your boot, oil meant for two-strokes or injector cleaner: no additive lifts the petrol.
  • Siphoning petrol into a can at the roadside is risky — and it also leaves whatever fuel has already gone beyond the tank. Don't drain the vehicle yourself.
  • Not for the radio, not for the windows: the ignition remains off.

When the van gets there: your fuel drain, step by step

  • First, three questions: which fuel was put in, the quantity, and has it run? Those answers decide the job, and so the quote follows them.
  • Clearing it is how that mixture gets taken out of the tank.
  • Flushing the lines comes next, because a car that ran has petrol past your tank, in the lines themselves.
  • Cleared, or swapped if the car has a serviceable one: the fuel filter is sorted next.
  • Fresh diesel goes in, and the system is primed.
  • The start. With new diesel in and the fuel system bled, it is started and tested to be sure it runs properly.

Only when it is running on fresh diesel do our technicians go. Long-term damage is very rare when it has been noticed soon, so the car can go straight back to normal use.

Back on the road around Framfield after the fuel drain

  • Drive normally. There's nothing unusual to do after it has been started on fresh fuel.
  • Keep an eye on the first miles. A warning light, smoke, a rough idle or a flat spot under the throttle means pull over then call us back.
  • Keep the documents. A hire company, a fleet manager or an insurer may ask what was carried out.
  • The handle's colour isn't the guide to go by next time — the label on the pump is.
