Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Franklands Village

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled vehicles where they are, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, throughout Franklands Village and the remainder of West Sussex. The first thing to do is not to fire up the engine. When your engine has not run and the petrol is still in that tank, a fuel drain is almost always all it needs, and the following few minutes decide that, not how much was put in. Contact us before all else happens, so you'll hear what happens from there.

Petrol in a diesel: what to try first

  • Don't fire it up. Turned on regardless? Then do not rely on it. Diesel in a petrol motor normally won't run, and so the driver stops and the harm stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It moves off fine, for a couple of miles. Drivers get that reversed. It isn't all right — that fuel system is wearing down every mile you do.
  • Leave the ignition be also. Diesel has two tasks: it ignites, and before it combusts it lubricates the injection pump and the injectors. Petrol manages the first but not the second. Flicking your ignition on is usually enough to prime the system, which moves this petrol out of the tank then into precisely those components.
  • Topping up takes out nothing. It leaves you a fuller tank of the same mix, since a diesel fuel system will not accept petrol by percentage the way that advice presumes — so don't tip diesel on top to weaken it. Octane is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • A motor that hasn't shifted is the simplest one to handle, and so remain where you are if you sensibly can. Parked on the verge on Franklands Village? Hazards on, and keep the vehicle there. A tricky place suits us better than a started engine.
  • Check where you are before phoning. A postcode starting RH16 3, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the van circles instead of showing up.
  • Call 0333 366 0103. Expect three things — what got in, roughly how many litres, plus whether the car has been turned over. The replies determine everything that happens next.

The trip in is what sucked thinned diesel through your pump. Standing still has pushed nothing. Petrol in a diesel Volkswagen Passat, sitting outside Haywards Heath all day, sits dormant in your tank while it waits. Phone first — before the keys come out.

The complicated part is the bay, not your fuel. Motors either side of you, a trolley shelter behind, and now and then a height barrier on the way in that decides whether a technician can reach you at all — so when you ring from a car park like the one outside Waitrose, say how much clearance there's round you and which way round the vehicle is. Those we visit regularly. Should there be no room to work beside your diesel Renault Clio, it gets moved with the motor off, and not out of fussiness over a few seconds of running: priming takes place at every start, more of that mixture departs the tank for your pump, and two shunts into a nicer space have quietly made a bigger job of what was merely a motor standing still.

Chance the trip home from The Snowdrop? Not a chance. It will fire up and it will move off perfectly well, which is the issue — a diesel on a thinned tank runs usually whilst wearing down the parts your fuel should be lubricating. Leave the Ford Focus and call us.

The pump is not turning, so whatever the diesel Mercedes C-Class did on the way to Forest Fields, none of it is happening now. Nothing gets worse whilst it waits. Take your time over this — but never drive the vehicle home to buy any.

Put right and starting aren't the same thing, and the difference is the circuit: we flush it, and take your filter off where there is a working one. Compare that with the confident suggestion you will get — drain the car, refill with clean diesel. Only half right. Do exactly that to a diesel Volvo XC60 near Ruwach Christian Church and it will start, which is precisely why the suggestion sounds plausible. Then the engine sucks the petrol left behind in the fuel filter, and in the feed lines, straight back through your pump, because emptying a tank does nothing whatever about fuel that has already left it. Call us instead.

At the forecourt: clearing petrol from a diesel

Forecourts are where the work usually begins, and where a fair portion of that finishes. We operate on garage forecourts routinely, with the owner's permission, so if you're still at Shell that's usually where the drain happens.

A filling station is the one spot the mistake is caught before your motor has run. Fuel pulled out of the tank and through the fuel filter, all the way to your high-pressure pump, is what occurs when the engine is switched on and the car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the drive or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes your filter and your lines as well as that tank. That is still not a catastrophe, and we sort it out where the vehicle stands. What determines it is whether the key was reached for in the seconds after the receipt was checked.

Staff will usually chip in pushing it out from the pump, which lets the next driver get through. Take the offer. Moving the car four bays does not merit firing the engine.

Parts our vans reach near Franklands Village

Franklands Village is a residential suburb, so our team are out to it and to anywhere near it on the usual runs: Lyoth Common, Haywards Heath, Walstead, Lindfield and Fox Hill.

Our technicians still come. Those places above are just the immediate neighbours, and a page is there for most places in West Sussex, and so an absence from the list is not an absence from the coverage. Ring us to enquire rather than guessing — boundaries especially, and wherever your satnav might misread.

The area the page covers is on our map. The vehicle never needs to move to us. Our technicians work over the lot — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Roadside call-outs around Franklands Village

Some drivers get no safe place to pull over at all. If you worked it out after setting off and landed on the verge of Hoblands, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights flashing, that is a routine call for us and not an unusual one.

Out of your car while it's not sensible to sit in it, by it if it is. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags the mix further into the system — and oblige it often will, which is why the engine does not get restarted to limp somewhere safer. We'll send our van to an awkward place without any fuss, and for the vehicle that is much better than driving on.

Already run it? Petrol in a diesel over some miles

The M23 is the one which matters now, and sits under 10 miles from Franklands Village. A loss of power, an uneven idle, smoke: those are the symptoms when they arrive, rather than a tidy stop — and a misfilled diesel will usually get you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong at all.

Don't restart it to move it. Pull off at the next safe junction and turn off. Long run? Anything near the under 15 miles to the nearest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it reached by the mixture. Say that on the call, because it alters what goes in our van.

A bit about Franklands Village

Franklands Village is a suburban area in West Sussex, situated inland at an elevation of 67 metres, approximately 12 miles north of Brighton and Hove. Franklands Village is characterized by its predominantly semi-detached housing stock and is located near Lyoth Common, Haywards Heath, and Walstead. Franklands Village has a population of around 6518 residents and is within commuting distance of London, being about 35 miles south of the capital.

What happens when our engineers reach you around Franklands Village

  • Three things get established before any quote — your fuel that went in, the amount, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.
  • Out comes the polluted mixture.
  • Our technicians rinse the fuel lines and clear the fuel filter, and so what's remaining in the fuel system isn't what caused the issue.
  • New diesel goes in, and then the system gets bled.
  • Our engineers turn it on and check it runs correctly on new diesel.

From that point, you're ready to drive away. Long-term damage is very uncommon when it has been spotted early, and because all of this is done where the vehicle is, it never needs to go to a garage.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Franklands Village is a different matter

The fault isn't the same, though the opening rule is — never start it — if what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol. The protection a fuel system depends on is stripped away by petrol, which thins your diesel. AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to rust and residue instead.

Both are ours. There is a separate Franklands Village page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Franklands Village?

One price wouldn't be fair here, because this isn't one job. These are the things that shift it:

  • This is the big one: whether your engine has been started, or driven.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
  • Whether it is petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where your vehicle is, and whether our van can safely reach and work on it.

Tell us what your vehicle is, how much got in, and whether the engine has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range. Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is ideal for that.

Franklands Village motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Franklands Village?

Yes — forecourts are where a big portion of this gets done. Our technicians visit Texaco and the other forecourts nearby all the time, with the station's agreement — tell us which one you are at when you call and we'll tell you if our technicians can work there.

Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?

It depends on the proportion instead of the litres, and much more on whether the engine has run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is required is if that mixture has been sucked through your fuel system.

I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does move the problem out of that tank and into the pump and injectors, yes, and it remains salvageable much more regularly than people expect.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

It isn't an alteration, so a drain and flush carried out correctly doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

What petrol has thinned is not restored by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a different issue. So no. That tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and your pump still has to cope with it.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

No. Our technicians drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is, so there is no need to take it to a main dealer.

Still with the vehicle?

That engine stays off.

If you have already driven the vehicle, pull over somewhere sensible, switch it off and keep it off. Cold and still, a motor is in the best position available — and motorists fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.
