Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Freelands

If you have not fired up the engine yet, don't. A fuel drain and nothing more is nearly always what a vehicle needs while the fuel is still sitting in the tank and your engine has not yet run, which is why it is the following few minutes that matter, not how much got in. Petrol in Diesel travels to the vehicle wherever it has come to rest in Freelands or the remainder of Northumberland, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, and drains and cleans it there. Our engineers shall explain what your next stage will be. Contact us — that goes ahead of all else.

Petrol in a diesel: what to do first

  • Don't fire it up — and don't believe it if it fires up. That is the part people get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol engine fed diesel normally just won't run, and so the motorist stops and the harm halts with them. A diesel given petrol usually starts, ticks over and pulls away perfectly well for a couple of miles. It isn't all right. It's wearing that fuel system while you drive.
  • Leave your ignition off as well. Diesel does two jobs: it burns, and before it burns it lubricates that injection pump and its injectors. Petrol does the first but not the second. Turning the ignition on is often sufficient to prime the system, which pulls that petrol out of your tank then into precisely those parts.
  • Don't pour diesel on top to water down it. A diesel fuel system won't handle petrol by percentage in the way that advice assumes, and topping up gets rid of nothing — it merely gives you a fuller tank of the same mixture. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • A vehicle that hasn't moved is the easiest one to deal with, so wait where you are if you safely can. Parked on the verge on Royal Oak Gardens? Hazards on, then keep the vehicle there. An odd location works for us better than a started motor.
  • Find out where you are before phoning. A postcode beginning NE66 2, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise the van circles instead of showing up.
  • Ring 0333 366 0103. Expect three points — what went in, approximately how much, and if the engine has been run. Those responses decide all that comes after.

Quarter past eight, a quick top-up on the trip in, and it dawns on you somewhere around eleven — by that point the diesel Renault Megane has been parked at Alnmouth for three hours. Phone then leave it just where it sits. The journey in is the part that is key here, since diesel does two jobs on its way through a motor: it combusts, and before it combusts it greases that high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors. Petrol does the first and not the second. So those couple of miles were travelled with the pump labouring on a fluid that had lost most of the protection it is built around — which is why the question we ask is how many miles you travelled, not how long your car has been stood.

Never risk it. The journey home from The Plough is perfectly possible, which is precisely the trouble — a weakened tank doesn't stop a diesel starting or pulling away, it just wears down the components the fuel is meant to protect. Phone, and let the Ford Focus stay where it sits.

Do not drive it home to buy yourself time. You already have it: nothing gets worse whilst your car waits, since a diesel Mercedes C-Class parked outside Cherry Orchard is doing none of what it did on the way there. The pump has stopped turning.

Why so blunt about leaving your keys alone? Since the pump is upstream of your injectors, and a worn-out one sends whatever it sheds onward with the fuel. Call us. Leave the Peugeot 3008 close to Willowburn.

What occurs next is the issue. Your engine at once sucks the petrol still waiting in your filter and the feed lines back round through your pump a second time, because emptying a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Drain it and put clean diesel in, a person confident will tell you — and that tip is only half right, as do it to a diesel Volkswagen Polo parked up, Alnwick RUFC say, and the thing starts, which is what makes it sound sensible. Phone us instead. We flush your system and take the filter off where the vehicle has a workable one, and that's the difference between the vehicle being repaired and the vehicle just starting.

Can petrol be taken from a diesel on the forecourt?

Plenty of the job starts at the pump, meaning a large share of that gets finished at one. We operate on garage forecourts all the time, with the station's agreement, and so if you're still at Esso that's normally where the drain happens.

The forecourt is the single place this is halted before the engine has fired. The few seconds between reading the receipt and reaching for your key determine how much requires rinsing. Anywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was started and moved to get there, so fuel was drawn from your tank, through your filter and into the high-pressure pump. That means the fuel lines and your filter need flushing as well as the tank. It is not a disaster, and we can still sort it out where your car stands.

The attendants will usually help you roll the car clear of the pump so the next driver can get through. That is worth doing. Firing it to roll four vehicle lengths is not.

Freelands and the villages next to it

Alnwick, Denwick, Hawkhill, Rugley, Bilton — every one of them on our trips that take us out to Freelands too, a small village.

We do come. Those names above are just the closest neighbours, and a page is there for most places across Northumberland, and so an absence from the list isn't an absence from our coverage. Close to a border, or anywhere the satnav struggles with? Ring us and ask rather than guessing.

The map marks the patch this page spans. Every bit of that is territory our technicians work: a kerbside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You never move your vehicle anywhere.

Stopped by the kerb anywhere in Freelands?

Not everybody has the chance to pull in anywhere safe. Hazards going in a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge on Augur Terrace as you noticed after setting off — our technicians take that call regularly enough that it's the normal kind.

Whether you stay with the vehicle or keep clear of it turns on whether being in it is wise. It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that is the catch: start it up to get to somewhere safer and that blend goes further into your fuel system with every mile covered. Driving on does the vehicle far more harm than our van coming out to a difficult place, and that's no trouble for us.

A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

under 50 miles out of Freelands, your A167(M) is what counts now. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will usually do both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is rarely a clean stop. Power ebbs away, the idle goes lumpy, and there may be smoke.

Take the next junction that's sensible, pull up there, and do not restart the car to move it. Long drive? Anything close to the under 50 miles to the closest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it got to by the contamination. Say that on the phone, as it alters what goes in our van.

All about Freelands

Freelands is a locality situated on the riverside in Northumberland, with an elevation of 63 metres above sea level. Freelands lies approximately 29 miles north of Newcastle upon Tyne and is surrounded by nearby places such as Alnwick, Denwick, and Hawkhill. Freelands has a population of around 1617 residents, predominantly living in semi-detached housing. Freelands is located in the north-east of England, about 277 miles from London.

What we do when our technicians get to you around Freelands

  • Three things get established before any price — the fuel that went in, the quantity, and if anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.
  • We empty the tank of the contaminated mixture.
  • We flush the lines and clean the filter, so what is remaining in the system is not what caused the trouble.
  • Fresh diesel goes in, and then the system gets bled.
  • The engine is turned on and checked to make sure it runs properly on fresh diesel.

That leaves the car ready to pull away. There is no need for a workshop at any stage, since the work is all done where the car is, and when it's caught early, lasting damage is very uncommon.

Freelands AdBlue removal is a separate problem

If what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the opening step is unchanged — do not start it — yet this fault isn't. Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and removes the protection the fuel system relies on. Rust and residue are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, as AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Our engineers deal with both, and AdBlue removal in Freelands has its own page with the details — including why it's often the more serious of the two.

Freelands pricing for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

Our engineers can't put one figure on this page honestly, because this job isn't one job. What changes it:

  • Whether your engine has been run or driven. This is the big one.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, weighed against how much the tank can hold.
  • The sort of liquid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where the vehicle is, and if a technician can sensibly get to and work on it.

Tell us what your vehicle is, how much got in, and if the engine has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range. Not time-critical, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then does the job.

Questions our technicians get about petrol in diesel around Freelands

Fuel drains on a Freelands petrol station forecourt

Yes — forecourts are where a big share of this gets done. Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like BP is somewhere we're often enough, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you'll hear whether working there's possible.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

It hinges on the ratio rather than the litres, and far more on whether your motor has run. Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mixture been drawn right through, or has it not?

I put petrol in my diesel and drove the car. Now what?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then turn off and keep it off. Driving takes the issue along — out of the tank, into the pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one truly helpful thing left to you isn't restarting the car.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

It is not a change, so a drain and flush carried out correctly does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

What petrol has thinned is not replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a different fault. So no. Petrol remains in that tank later, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no respite from it.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

No. We drain and clean the car wherever it is, so there's no need to take it to a dealership.

Still with the vehicle?

Switched off is the way the car remains.

If you have already driven it, pull over somewhere safe, turn it off and leave it off. Cold, still, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. People fear this far more than they need to.
