Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Frith Hill? Don't Start It

Do not start the engine. If the petrol is still sitting in that tank and your engine has not yet run, a tank drain is almost always all it takes — and that's determined in the next few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled vehicles where they stand, throughout Frith Hill and the remainder of Surrey, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive. Call us so our technicians will show you what follows after that before you do much else.

Now what? Petrol in a diesel, in turn

  • Give a petrol engine diesel and it will generally not run at all, and so the person stops there and so does the wear. Give a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it idles, it moves off — all right for a couple of miles. Drivers have that muddled, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So don't start it. And if started, don't believe it: that fuel system is wearing whenever you drive.
  • Two things, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps your injection pump and injectors oiled. Petrol only does the one. Which is why your ignition is left off too — flick it on and you commonly prime that system, and that is petrol exiting the tank for just those parts.
  • That advice presumes a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol by percentage. It will not. Pour diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you have is a larger tank of the same blend. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.
  • Wait where you are if you sensibly can. A motor that hasn't shifted is the easiest one to sort, and our team would sooner come to a difficult place than have it started. If you are stopped on the verge on Summer Hill, turn those hazards on and leave the vehicle there.
  • Find out where you are before ringing. A postcode that starts GU7 2, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise the technician circles rather than arriving.
  • What was put in, approximately how much, and whether the car has fired — those three answers settle your whole visit. Ring 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

The run in is what drew weakened diesel through the pump. Sitting still has pushed nothing. Petrol in a diesel Volkswagen Golf, sitting outside Farncombe all day, sits dormant in your tank whilst it waits. Phone first — before the keys turn.

Do not chance it. The trip home from The Charterhouse Arms is perfectly possible, which is exactly the trouble — a thinned tank does not stop a diesel starting or pulling away, it just grinds the parts the fuel is supposed to lubricate. Phone us, and let the Audi A4 stay where it sits.

None of it is the motor failing. That's the part worth hearing, and it's why the normal Phillips Memorial Cloister call ends better than it sounds: a diesel Ford Focus drives out there without fuss, comes back with the power gone, your idle lumpy and maybe a little smoke, and the cause is the fuel no longer acting like diesel. Diesel has to be thick enough to seal the close-fitting parts it flows through; petrol dilutes it; and a diesel injection system is hydraulic as much as chemical, needing the fuel to hold pressure instead of only to burn. So pressure that should build then stay built leaks past tolerances, delivery shows up poorer and later and less even than engineered, and all of that stops once the fuel is sorted.

Ringing from close to Memorial Chapel? Three things help us. The filler — which side of your car it is on. Room for a van next to you, without the road being blocked. And whether anything has run since the fill-up. The spot itself barely matters: on-street is where we work most, and we'd much rather have a tight bay than a car someone has driven somewhere simpler. Then it's a drain for the Peugeot 208, a filter change where there's one worth changing, lines rinsed, clean fuel put round the entire system. By now the worst of it is in your lines and not that tank.

By now your tank is the least of that. Run a diesel and that mix goes into your filter, into the lines, into the pump, into the rail — and none of that leaves with your tank contents. A diesel Kia Sportage that got close to Hampton Manor wants its circuit cleared. Clearing is not the same thing.

Can petrol be pumped out of a diesel on the forecourt?

A large share of the work gets completed at a forecourt, as that's where it mostly starts. If you're still at the forecourt at Sainsbury's, that is normally where this drain takes place — we operate on petrol station forecourts routinely, with the station's agreement.

At a garage, it is stopped with the motor never started, and nowhere else does it. Fuel pulled out of the tank and through the fuel filter, all the way to your high-pressure pump, is what occurs when the engine is fired up and the vehicle is moved to where it is now: the car park, the drive or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes the filter and the lines along with that tank. That is still not a disaster, and our engineers put it right where the vehicle sits. What determines it is whether the key was turned in the seconds after the receipt was checked.

Move the vehicle out of the way if the attendants suggest it, and they generally will. The next motorist gets past the pump, and that is worth doing. Four vehicle lengths isn't worth the risk.

Frith Hill plus the towns next to it

Frith Hill is a residential suburb, so our team head out to it and to the villages by it on the same journeys: Farncombe, Westbrook, Godalming, Binscombe and Catteshall.

Not on that list? That means nothing. The places above are only the nearest few, and nearly all locations across Surrey have a page of their own somewhere on this site. On the boundary, or somewhere your phone struggles with? Ring us and enquire rather than presuming.

Use the map for the area shown on this page. Our technicians work roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks throughout all of that, and the vehicle does not need to come to us.

Roadside call-outs around Frith Hill

Some drivers have no suitable spot to stop whatsoever. If you realised after setting off and landed on the verge on Charterhouse Road, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights on, that's a common call for us and not an odd one.

Remain beside the motor if it is safe to sit in it, and out of it if it is not. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags that blend further into your fuel system — and oblige it often will, which is why the motor does not get restarted to limp somewhere safer. Our van driving to a tricky place is no bother for us, and it is far better for your car than carrying on.

So you've driven it? Petrol in a diesel over a couple of miles

under 15 miles from Frith Hill, the local M3 is what counts here. A misfuelled diesel will usually take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong, while the symptoms when they appear are typically lost power, a lumpy idle and smoke rather than a neat stop.

The first safe exit is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone. On a longer trip — anything close to the under 50 miles to the closest city — assume the contamination has been through the fuel filter, your pump and the fuel injectors, and mention it when you phone. It changes what our engineers bring.

Frith Hill itself

Frith Hill is a suburban area in Surrey, situated near the riverside and surrounded by nearby places such as Farncombe, Westbrook, and Godalming. Frith Hill has a population of approximately 2993 residents and is characterised by predominantly detached housing. Frith Hill is located about 30 miles from London and 25 miles from Chichester, making it a commuter-friendly location. Frith Hill sits at an elevation of 58 metres, providing a relatively low-lying landscape.

What follows when we reach you in Frith Hill

  • The responses change the work, which is why we ask before pricing: what got in, how much of it, and if your motor has run.
  • The tainted mixture is pulled out of the tank.
  • We clean the lines and clean the filter, and so what is remaining in the system is not what started the issue.
  • The fuel system gets bled, on fresh diesel.
  • Our technicians turn it on and make sure it runs smoothly on new diesel.

That has your car ready to pull away. Our technicians do all of it wherever the vehicle has come to a stop, which means it never needs to be taken to a workshop, and if it has been noticed soon, it is very uncommon for there to be long-term damage.

A different job: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Frith Hill

The problem is not the same, though the first instruction is — never crank it — if what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol. Thinned diesel, and no protection left for the system that depends on it. That is petrol. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings corrosion and build-up.

Our engineers deal with both, and AdBlue removal around Frith Hill has its own page with the details — including why it is often the more significant of the two.

Frith Hill pricing for a petrol-in-diesel drain

One figure would not be honest here, since this isn't one job. These are the things that move it:

  • This is the big one: whether your engine has been run, or driven.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
  • Whether it was petrol or AdBlue.
  • Whether a technician can sensibly get to the vehicle and work on it, which rests on where the vehicle is.

Tell us your vehicle, the quantity and if it has run, and you'll get a firm answer instead of a range. For the car at home that's going nowhere and is not pressing, works too.

Frith Hill drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

I am on a forecourt around Frith Hill. Can you drain the car here?

Plenty of what our technicians do takes place nowhere else. So yes. Our engineers work at JET and the other forecourts locally all the time, with the owner's permission — tell us which one you're at when you call and we'll tell you whether our engineers can work there.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Whether the motor has run matters much more, though the proportion counts too, rather than the litres. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct scenarios, of course. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is whether the fuel system has had that blend sucked through it.

Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What now?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. Driving takes the problem along — out of your tank, into the pump and injectors. People fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really useful thing left to you is not restarting it.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

No. Carried out correctly, emptying and purging is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. Another reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one.

Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

No. It belongs to a distinct fault from a bygone era, and petrol has thinned something no oil of that kind replaces. Later on? Still petrol in your tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

You don't need one. The vehicle is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a main dealer.

Still with your vehicle?

Turned off is how it remains.

Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere safe, turn off, and let the vehicle stay that way. A stationary, cold motor is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from much more often than drivers assume.
