Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Fryerns?

With your tank still carrying the fuel and the engine not yet turned over, nearly every job requires only a drain, so keep the motor off. That outcome is decided in the minutes right after filling up, rather than by the amount that went in. All over Fryerns and the rest of Essex, Petrol in Diesel drains your car and flushes it where it is, whether by a roadside, on a drive or at a forecourt. Call us before all else happens, so you'll hear what follows from there.

Your next five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • Do not start the vehicle — and never believe it if it does start. Here is the thing motorists have wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol motor given diesel typically just won't run, and so the driver stops and the harm stops with them. A diesel filled with petrol normally starts, idles and drives off just fine for a few miles. It's not okay. It's eating into your fuel system as you drive.
  • Two jobs, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps the injection pump and injectors protected. Petrol only manages the one. That is why the ignition stays off as well — switch it on and you frequently prime the system, and that's petrol leaving your tank for just those components.
  • That advice supposes a diesel fuel system accepts petrol by percentage. It does not. Add diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you have is a larger tank of the same blend. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.
  • A motor that hasn't shifted is the quickest one to handle, and so wait where you are if you safely can. Stopped on the verge on The Fremnells? Hazards on, then keep it there. A difficult location works for us better than a started engine.
  • The van arriving instead of circling turns on two things: a postcode that starts SS14 2, and whatever is closest to you with a name on it. Keep both ready before you call.
  • What went in, about how many litres, plus if the car has fired — those three replies determine the entire call-out. Phone 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Don't take it home. The journey in has already forced a real quantity of petrol-thinned diesel through the high-pressure fuel pump of that Renault Megane, and the trip back would about double it for no reason at all. Ring us from the platform if that's easier. Our technicians do not need you standing over the vehicle at Basildon while our engineers work, and we'd very much rather talk to you tonight than realise on Monday.

Twenty to nine. At the gates of The Willows Primary School. Late already, and the receipt in your hand says unleaded. Turn the hazard lights on, leave your motor alone, then ring us. You might think three miles is nothing, in your BMW 3 Series or anything else — except that fuel is supplied to demand, and a run taken in a hurry asks for a great deal of that.

Happy on the way out, gutless on the way back. If that's how the run to Clicket Hill Playground went, that tank is where to look. Petrol dilutes diesel, and thinner fuel slips past the tightly fitted parts that are supposed to build injection pressure — so the farther your Audi A3 travelled, the less well it held that pressure. Pull over somewhere sensible, switch off then call us.

Why so firm about leaving your keys alone? Since the pump is ahead of your injectors, and a worn one sends whatever it gives off on with your fuel. Call us. Leave the Peugeot 208 by Fryerns Library.

Authorisation first, where there is a hire firm or a company behind your car — some agreements demand it, and settling that beforehand saves a great deal of time later. After that, ring us about your diesel Skoda Superb close to St Andrews, Basildon. You'll not know how full that tank was. Hardly anybody does, two days into a car, and it gets worked out on the spot all the same. We ask because the harm petrol does in a diesel is proportional: a couple of litres in a nearly empty tank make a much stronger blend than the same few in a full one, and since petrol is built to resist igniting under pressure, which is exactly what a diesel relies on, the stronger it gets the more your engine rattles and smokes and flattens off.

On a forecourt: clearing petrol from a diesel

A big chunk of the work is completed at a forecourt, as that's where it usually kicks off. Still at Texaco? Then that's usually where it takes place. Petrol station forecourts are routine for us, with the permission of the site.

Before the motor has run — a forecourt is the single place this ends up stopped. We can still put it right where it stands, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, your car has been fired up and moved there, and that drew fuel through the filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump, all the way from that tank. None of that is a disaster, although the flush then has to go past the tank to the fuel lines and the fuel filter, and the few seconds between reading the receipt and going for the key are what settle that.

The staff will normally happily push the car clear of the pump so the next customer can get through. That is worth doing. Moving it four bays does not merit starting the engine.

Service near Fryerns

Barstable, Ghyllgrove, Cranes, Chalvedon, Kingswood — all of them on the rounds that bring us across to Fryerns itself, a residential suburb.

If yours is not on this list it does not mean we never come — there are separate pages for nearly all towns around Essex, and the ones listed above are just the closest neighbours. Close to a border, or somewhere your phone can't find? Contact us and ask instead of guessing.

That map outlines the patch the page spans. Our technicians work roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and in car parks throughout all of it, and the car doesn't need to come to us.

Fryerns: stuck where you stopped

Some people have no safe spot to pull over at all. A routine call for us instead of a rare one: realised after setting off, finished up on the verge beside Gay Bowers or at a lay-by with the hazards on.

Whether you stay by your car or move away from it depends on whether being in it is safe. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls the mixture further into the system — and oblige it usually will, which is why your engine does not get restarted to limp somewhere handier. However tricky the place, it is no bother for us to get to it, and that's much better for the car than pressing on.

Some miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?

The local M25 is the road which matters here, and it lies under 10 miles from Fryerns. It will frequently take you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it is smoke, a lumpy idle and power falling away — not a neat stop. Misfilled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Come off at the next safe exit, switch off, and do not restart the vehicle to move it. It affects what our engineers bring, so say so when you phone: on a longer run — anything close to the under 15 miles to the closest city — take it the mixture has been through the fuel filter, the pump and the fuel injectors.

Once our engineers get to you in Fryerns: what follows

  • Our engineers ask first, price after. What went in? How much? Has the engine run? Those responses shape what the work really is.
  • We empty that tank of the polluted fuel.
  • Lines rinsed, filter cleared. Whatever remains afterwards isn't the thing that caused the problem.
  • The fuel system gets primed, on new diesel.
  • We fire it up and check it runs properly on clean diesel.

Then it is ready to set off. Our engineers do all of it wherever your car has ended up, which means it never has to be taken to a garage, and when it has been noticed early, it's very uncommon for there to be lasting damage.

Fryerns AdBlue removal is a separate job

The issue is not the same, though the opening step is — do not crank it — if what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol. Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and removes the protection the system relies on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus residue.

Both are ours. There's a separate Fryerns page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

Paying for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Fryerns

One number would not be fair here, as this is not one job. These are the things that move it:

  • Has it been started or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
  • The sort of fluid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Whether a technician can sensibly get to the vehicle and work on it, which rests on where your vehicle is.

A firm answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: your vehicle, the amount, and if it has run. For the vehicle at home that's going nowhere and is not time-critical, works too.

Petrol in diesel queries from Fryerns motorists

At a petrol station around Fryerns, can you do a fuel drain there?

A big portion of this work happens there, so yes. Routinely, provided the site agrees: Asda, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether we can work in that place is something our technicians answer on the spot.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Proportion decides it instead of litres — and more than either, whether your motor has run. What decides how much work is needed is whether that mixture has been drawn through the system — because even though five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate situation from five in a full one, either way that's the query.

I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. Driving shifts the trouble along — out of the tank, into your pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one genuinely useful thing left to you is not restarting the vehicle.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A manufacturer's warranty outlasts a drain and flush done to a correct standard, which is no alteration at all. An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a different fault and it doesn't replace what petrol has weakened. The pump still has to put up with it, because that tank still has petrol in it afterwards.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?

You do not need one. The vehicle is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a main dealer.

Still with your car?

Keep it switched off.

If you have already driven the car, pull over somewhere sensible, switch it off then leave it off. This is recoverable from much more often than motorists assume, and a still, cold motor is the best position to be in.
