Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Fulshaw Park

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled cars where they stand, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, across Fulshaw Park and the rest of Cheshire. The very first thing to do is not to fire up your engine. While the engine has not run and the fuel is still sitting in the tank, a fuel drain is nearly always all it takes, and the following few minutes settle that, not how much was put in. A single call to us is enough: our engineers shall show you what happens after this. Do it straight away.

Your first five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • Never start the vehicle — and do not depend on it when it fires up. This is the bit most people get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol engine given diesel normally just will not run, so the motorist stops and the wear halts with them. A diesel fed petrol typically starts, ticks over and moves off quite happily for several miles. It's not all right. It is wearing that fuel system while you drive.
  • Switching the car's ignition on usually primes your system, and priming is what pulls petrol out of your tank and into your pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps greased on its way through, before it burns. Petrol manages the burning and none of the oiling. Leave the ignition be.
  • Don't water down it. Diesel added on top takes out nothing, and so all you have is more of what was already there, since percentage is not how a diesel fuel system accepts petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The octane makes no difference.
  • A vehicle that has not moved is the easiest one to sort out, and so remain where you are if you safely can. Pulled up on the verge on Gravel Lane? Hazards on, and leave it there. An awkward location suits us better than a started diesel.
  • Get your location ready before you dial. A postcode that starts SK9 6 and whatever is next to you with a label on it is the difference between our van arriving and the van circling.
  • Phone 0333 366 0103. Anticipate three queries — what went in, roughly how much, and if the car has been turned over. The responses settle whatever comes after.

At the forecourt: clearing petrol from your diesel

Most of this job begins at the pump, which means a good share of that gets finished at one. If you're still at the forecourt at Asda Express, that's usually where this drain takes place — we operate on garage forecourts routinely, with the station's consent.

Before your engine has started — a forecourt is the only place this gets stopped. The few seconds between seeing the receipt and going for the key settle how much needs rinsing. Everywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the car was started and driven to get there, so fuel was pulled from that tank, through the filter and into the high-pressure pump. That means the fuel lines and your filter need cleaning as well as the tank. It's not a disaster, and we can still sort it out where the car sits.

Clear of the pump, the next customer can get past — so yes, let the attendants help you wheel it. Worth it. Cranking it just for four vehicle lengths? Not a chance.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Fulshaw Park

We are in car parks like the one outside Sainsbury's a lot, and it is hardly ever the fuel that complicates them. It's the bay. Motors both sides. Trolleys stacked up behind. Sometimes a height limit at the entrance, which determines whether a van gets to you at all. So tell us how penned in you are when you ring, and which way the car is pointing. If there is no room to work beside that Renault Megane, our engineers shift it without the engine. That is not fussiness over a handful of seconds: starts prime things, mixture comes out of your tank towards the pump, and a vehicle shifted twice for a nicer spot is silently a harder job than one no one touched.

Move it out of that gateway and deal with it later — that is what someone will say, and it is wrong. Sitting on the zig-zags by St Anne's Fulshaw C of E Primary School, a misfilled diesel Skoda Octavia is a hassle and nothing worse. Restarted three more times for politeness, it's no longer a tank problem but a fuel system one, because priming occurs with every start and more petrol goes through your filter toward the pump. Let people complain. Ring us.

A diesel BMW 3 Series sitting in the car park at King's Arms holding a tank of petrol in it is an easy job, right up till someone drives it home. Leave the car there overnight and phone us next morning. Nothing worsens whilst it stands. What our technicians will ask is whether that run there was short and cold, since that's where petrol is least able to burn fully — and whatever does not burn can slip past the piston rings and into the oil.

Petrol in a diesel does its harm as a share, which is the reason our engineers ask at all: the same few litres sitting in an almost empty tank make a far stronger blend than they would in a full one. And petrol is rated on how well it withstands igniting under pressure — the opposite of what a diesel wants — so a stronger mixture knocks more, smokes more, goes flatter. None of which means you need an answer ready. Nearly no one knows how full your tank was in a vehicle picked up two days ago, and our engineers work that out on site. Do ring the hire or company firm first, though: some contracts want them to approve the work, and that is far faster settled before than after. Then ring us about the Mercedes C-Class near St. Anne's Fulshaw.

A few streets, then it stopped. Throttle soft, idle ragged, and your diesel Dacia Duster is parked up near Wilmslow Green Room Theatre. Your engine isn't giving up — that deadness is fuel that will not build pressure. There is no light on the dash for it, and so cars like yours generally get driven again before anyone picks up the phone. Please don't. Off, then phone us.

Fulshaw Park and the places beside it

Davenport Green, Harden Park, Wilmslow, Pownall Park, Row-of-trees — each of them on our trips that bring us across to Fulshaw Park itself, a residential suburb.

If yours is not on this list it doesn't mean we don't come — there are pages for the majority of places across Cheshire, and the ones listed above are just the immediate neighbours. Near a border, or somewhere a satnav misreads? Phone to enquire instead of assuming.

This map is the ground this page covers. The vehicle does not need to travel to us. We work across every bit of it — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Fulshaw Park: stuck where you parked

A chance to pull in somewhere suitable doesn't come to everybody. A normal call for us and not an unusual one: noticed after setting off, finished up along the verge on Beechway or at a lay-by with your hazards going.

Fine there? Sit beside it. Not safe? Climb out and clear of it. It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that is the problem: restart the car to reach somewhere better and the blend goes further into the system with every mile covered. Pressing on does your car far more harm than a van driving out to a tricky location, and that's no trouble for us.

A few miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?

This is where your M56 counts, under 5 miles away from Fulshaw Park. It will usually take you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it's some smoke, a rough idle and power ebbing away — not a neat stop. Misfuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Don't start it to move it. Come off at the next safe junction and turn off. On a longer trip — anything near the under 15 miles to the nearest city — take it the petrol has been through your filter, the pump and the fuel injectors, and say so when you ring. It affects what our engineers bring.

About Fulshaw Park

Fulshaw Park is a suburban area in Cheshire, situated near the River Bollin and close to the towns of Wilmslow and Davenport Green. Fulshaw Park has a mix of housing types, but is predominantly characterised by detached homes. Fulshaw Park sits at an elevation of 78 metres, within the North West region of England, and is approximately 11 miles from Manchester. Fulshaw Park is one of several suburban areas in the vicinity, including Harden Park and Davenport Green.

What follows when we arrive with you around Fulshaw Park

  • Our engineers ask first, price after. What was put in? How much? Has the engine run? Those responses alter what the work actually is.
  • Our technicians clear the tank of all the polluted mixture.
  • Lines cleaned, filter cleared. Whatever is left after that isn't the thing that started the trouble.
  • Your system gets primed, on clean diesel.
  • The motor is turned on and tested to confirm it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

Then it's ready to drive away. All of this is done where the vehicle is, so it never has to go to a garage, and when it has been caught quickly, lasting damage is very uncommon.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Fulshaw Park is a distinct matter

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first instruction is unchanged — your engine stays off — whereas this fault under it is a different one altogether. Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and removes the protection your fuel system depends on. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that causes corrosion and build-up.

Both are ours. There is a separate Fulshaw Park page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost in Fulshaw Park

Frankly, no single number belongs on a page like this. The job differs. Here's what varies it:

  • Whether your engine has been started or driven. This is the main one.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
  • Whether it is petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can a technician reach it and work there sensibly?

The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back clear instead of as a range. Car at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is fine for that.

Petrol in diesel queries from Fulshaw Park drivers

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Fulshaw Park?

Yes — forecourts are where a good share of this happens. Routinely, provided the site consents: BP, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether we can work in that spot is something our technicians answer straight away.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

It rests on the ratio rather than the litres, and a lot more on whether the engine has run. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct situations, certainly. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is if the system has had that mix pulled through it.

Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What then?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then turn off and keep it off. It's salvageable far more regularly than drivers assume, even though driving is what shifts the issue from your tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart it.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

It isn't a modification, so a drain then flush carried out correctly doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty. Another good reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a separate issue and it does not replace what petrol has thinned. Petrol remains in that tank afterwards, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no reprieve from it.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

You do not need one. The vehicle is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to take it to a dealership.

You, and your car, still together?

The engine remains off.

If you have already driven the vehicle, pull over somewhere safe, switch it off and keep it off. This is recoverable from a lot more often than people assume, and a stationary, cold motor is the best place to be in.

At the kerbside, on the forecourt or at home — call-out fuel draining in Fulshaw Park and throughout Cheshire.
