Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Fulwell

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled cars where they stand, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, across Fulwell and the remainder of Greater London. The very first thing to do is not to start the motor. When your engine has not turned over and the fuel is still inside that tank, a fuel drain is almost always all it requires, and the following few minutes settle that, not how much was put in. Phone so our team can explain what happens from here before you attempt much else.

The first five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • Do not fire it up — and don't depend on it if it fires up. Here is the thing drivers have wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol motor filled with diesel normally just will not run, so the motorist stops and the wear ends with them. A diesel given petrol normally starts, idles and drives off without complaint for several miles. It's not fine. It is wearing out your fuel system as you drive.
  • Diesel combusts, and before it burns it greases — the high-pressure fuel pump, its injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave the car's ignition off as well: switching it on is commonly enough to prime that system, and priming moves petrol from the tank into just those parts.
  • That advice assumes a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol by percentage. It will not. Add diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you get is a bigger tank of the same mix. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.
  • Remain where you are if you sensibly can. A car that has not moved is the easiest one to sort, and we would sooner travel to a difficult spot than have it started. If you're parked on the verge on Stanley Road, switch the hazards on then leave the vehicle there.
  • Find out where you are before phoning. A postcode beginning TW11 8, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the van circles rather than turning up.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Say what went in, about how much, and also whether your car has started. These three details determine the full call-out.

The drive back would about double it, for no purpose at all. One commute has already pushed a real quantity of petrol-thinned diesel through the high-pressure fuel pump of your Volkswagen Golf. So leave the vehicle where it sits. Ring us from the platform if that's handier — no one needs you hovering over the vehicle outside the nearest station while our technicians get on, and tonight beats finding out on Monday.

Put diesel in a petrol vehicle and generally it will not run, so the driver stops there and the damage stops with them. Reverse it — petrol into a diesel — and the car starts, idles and pulls away as though nothing had happened, while the high-pressure fuel pump works without the lubrication the fuel is supposed to be providing. That is the snag, and it is why your diesel Skoda Octavia will have seemed entirely ordinary coming back from Stanley Primary School. They all do. From behind the wheel there is nothing to alert you about, so nothing warns you. Phone us with about how far you drove, and how hard; the second answer counts more than the first.

Seldom the trouble, the location. On-street is the most common spot we work, and a narrow parking space is far preferable to a motor that has been driven somewhere more convenient. What does help, when you ring from close to Teddington Council School WW1, is three things: the side the filler is on, whether our van can pull up next to without blocking the road, and whether anything has run since you filled up. Then your BMW 1 Series gets drained, the filter changed where a workable one exists, the lines rinsed and clean fuel put through the whole system — as by now the worst of it is in the lines, not your tank.

Rattling, an uneven idle, white smoke, a throttle gone limp. That's a misfuelled diesel Ford Kuga telling you what's wrong. Switch off where you have stopped, near St Michael's Fulwell or anywhere else, and do not start the car to find a better spot.

By this point that tank is not where most of the trouble is. Once a diesel has run, the mix is in the filter, the fuel lines, your pump and the rail — and it does not come back out with your tank contents. A diesel Mercedes A-Class that got near Creative and Performing Arts Centre needs your circuit purged, not emptied.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Fulwell

Can petrol be taken out of a diesel at a forecourt?

A fair chunk of this job gets completed at a forecourt, since that is where it mostly starts. The drain normally takes place on the spot. Still on the forecourt at Esso? Given the owner's permission, that's a spot we work, and regularly.

Before the motor has started — the forecourt is the one setting the mistake ends up spotted. Our engineers can still put it right where it sits, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, the vehicle has been fired up and driven there, and that pulled fuel through your filter and into your high-pressure pump, all the way from your tank. None of that is a calamity, although the flush then has to reach past that tank to the lines and your filter, and the few seconds between seeing the receipt and reaching for the keys are what settle that.

The staff will generally offer to wheel the car clear of the pump so the next customer can get through. That is worth doing. Starting the car for four car lengths? Not a chance.

Coverage in Fulwell

Hampton Hill, Strawberry Hill, Teddington, Hampton, Eel Pie Island — every one of those on our trips that take us out to Fulwell too, a residential suburb.

If yours is not on the list that does not mean we don't come — there are pages for nearly all locations across Greater London, and the ones mentioned above are merely the closest neighbours. Assuming is the thing to resist, particularly on a boundary or anywhere a satnav gets lost. Contact us and ask.

Look at the map for the patch included on this page. All of it is territory our engineers serve: a roadside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You do not bring your car anywhere.

Fulwell: stranded wherever you stopped

A chance to stop somewhere safe does not come to everyone. Set off, then realised? Landed along the verge of Clonmel Road, or parked in some lay-by with the hazard lights on? That is a routine call here. Not an unusual one.

Stay beside your car if it's safe to wait inside, but out of the vehicle when it is not. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags that blend further into the system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why your engine doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere handier. Our van driving to a difficult spot is no problem for us, and it is a lot better for the car than carrying on.

Petrol in a diesel, but the motor has moved

under 5 miles out of Fulwell, your M3 is what counts here. A misfilled diesel will usually take you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong, while the symptoms when they appear are generally lost power, an uneven idle and some smoke rather than a neat stop.

Come off at the first sensible exit, switch off, and don't start the vehicle to reposition. It affects what we bring, and so mention it when you phone: on a longer drive — anything near the under 15 miles to the nearest city — take it the petrol has been through the fuel filter, your pump and the injectors.

A bit about Fulwell

Fulwell is a suburban area in southwest Greater London, situated near the River Thames and close to neighbouring communities such as Hampton Hill and Teddington. Fulwell sits at a relatively low elevation of around 19 metres above sea level, with a mix of terraced housing and other residential properties. Fulwell is located approximately 10.7 miles from central London, with Westminster just over 10 miles away. Fulwell has a population of around 8930 residents, living in a predominantly terraced housing environment.

What our technicians do when our engineers arrive with you in Fulwell

  • The responses shape the work, which is why our technicians ask before quoting: what got in, how much of it, and if the motor has run.
  • Our engineers drain that tank of the tainted mixture.
  • What is remaining in your system should not be what started the trouble, and so the fuel lines get rinsed and the fuel filter cleared.
  • Priming follows, once clean diesel is in.
  • Our technicians start the car and confirm it runs properly on clean diesel.

That leaves it ready to drive away. All of it is done where the car is, so it never needs to go to a garage, and when it has been noticed soon, long-term damage is very unusual.

Fulwell AdBlue removal is a separate matter

Don't crank it: that opening instruction holds whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is this issue itself. Thinned diesel, and no protection left for the system that relies on it. That is petrol. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to corrosion and residue.

Our engineers handle both, and AdBlue removal around Fulwell has its own page with the full story — including why it's usually the more significant of the two.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Fulwell?

What shifts the price is set out below, because this job is not one job and our engineers cannot honestly put a single number on this page.

  • This is the big one: whether the motor has been run, or driven.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
  • Which was put in: petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where the car is, and if a van can sensibly get to and work on it.

The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight and not as a range. If it is not pressing — the car is at home and going nowhere — works too.

Petrol in diesel: frequent queries in Fulwell

Fuel drains on a Fulwell petrol station forecourt

A good part of this work gets done there, so yes. We visit Shell and the other forecourts around town regularly, with the station's agreement — tell us which one you're at when you call and we will tell you if our engineers can work there.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Proportion settles it instead of litres — and more than either, whether your engine has run. Five litres into an almost dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that blend been drawn right through, or has it not?

Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What then?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does move the issue out of the tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it stays fixable far more commonly than motorists assume.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

No. Carried out properly, draining and rinsing is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one, which is another good reason to leave the car switched off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

Two-stroke oil solves a different issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol thinned. No. Petrol remains in that tank later on, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no break from it.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

No. Our engineers drain and flush the car wherever it is, so there's no need to take it to a main dealer.

You, and your car, still together?

Keep the car turned off.

Switch it off somewhere sensible then keep it off, if you have already driven it. Cold, still, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. People fear this far more than they need to.
