Gabalfa: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?
If you have not turned on the motor yet, do not. A fuel drain and nothing else is nearly always what a vehicle needs while the fuel is still in that tank and the motor has not turned over, which is why it is the next few minutes that matter, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel goes to your car wherever it has ended up in Gabalfa or the rest of Cardiff, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, and drains and cleans it there. Contact us and our engineers will show you what follows next before you attempt much else.
What to do next about petrol in a diesel
- Do not start the car — and don't trust it when it fires up. Here is the part motorists have wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol motor filled with diesel generally just will not run, and so the driver stops and the damage stops with them. A diesel fed petrol generally starts, idles and moves off quite happily for a few miles. It isn't okay. It is wearing the fuel system as you drive.
- Diesel burns, and before it burns it protects — that high-pressure fuel pump, its injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave the car's ignition alone too: switching it on is usually enough to prime your system, and priming moves petrol from the tank into precisely those components.
- Never pour diesel on top to weaken it. A diesel fuel system doesn't accept petrol by percentage as that guidance suggests, and topping up clears nothing — it only hands you a larger tank of the same mix. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.
- Remain where you are if you sensibly can. A vehicle that hasn't moved is the quickest one to sort out, and we'd sooner drive to an odd location than have it started. If you're stopped on the verge on Gabalfa Avenue, put your hazards on then leave it there.
- Get your position ready before you ring. A postcode starting CF14 2 and whatever is closest to you with a sign on it is the difference between our van showing up and a van circling.
- Phone 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three points — what went in, roughly how many litres, plus whether your car has been run. The responses shape all that follows.
Do not run it home. The commute has already pushed a real load of petrol-thinned diesel through the high-pressure fuel pump of your Renault Megane, and the drive back would close to double it for no reason at all. Phone us from the platform if that is handier. We never need you hovering over the car at Llandaf while our technicians work, and our team would much rather hear from you tonight than realise on Monday.
Petrol in your Volkswagen Passat, and it takes diesel? Shopping in your boot, you at Aldi, somewhere in Gabalfa? Then call us, and leave the motor out of it — not even to get out of the spot. A technician comes out to you. Tank drained, fuel lines rinsed, fresh diesel in, and home you go. Light throttle over a mile draws little, and so these are often the simple cases.
Sitting still, it gets no worse. The pump is not turning, and so whatever occurred on the way to Lydstep Park in that diesel Nissan Qashqai is finished happening. Time is yours. Just do not take it home on your engine to find more of that.
Hire car or company car? Call them before you phone us — some agreements want the hire firm to authorise the work, and sorting that out first is a great deal faster than sorting it later. Then phone us about the Mercedes E-Class by Emmanuel Baptist Church, and do not worry that you can't say how full your tank was. Almost nobody can, in a car they picked up two days ago, and our engineers work it out there. The reason we ask is that petrol in a diesel does its damage as a ratio: the same few litres in a nearly empty tank is a far stronger mix than in a full one. Petrol is rated on how well it withstands igniting under pressure, which is the opposite of what a diesel needs — so the stronger that mix, the more it rattles, smokes and goes flat.
By now your tank is the least of it. Run a diesel and that mix goes into the filter, into the fuel lines, into your pump, into its rail — and none of that leaves with that tank contents. A diesel BMW 5 Series that made it by Our Lady of Lourdes wants its system flushed. Clearing isn't the same thing.
Pump-side draining for petrol in a diesel
Much of the work starts at the pump, so a fair portion of it is done at one. If you're still at the forecourt at Tesco, that's typically where the drain gets done — we work on station forecourts regularly, with the station's permission.
The forecourt is the one spot it is caught before the motor has started. We can still sort it out where it sits, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a drive or in a lay-by, the car has been fired up and driven there, and that sucked fuel through your filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump, all the way from the tank. None of that is a catastrophe, although the flush then has to go past the tank to the lines and the fuel filter, and the few seconds between reading the till receipt and reaching for the key are what settle that.
The attendants will usually help you wheel the car clear of the pump so the next customer can get by. That is worth doing. Firing the car to shift four car lengths isn't.
Gabalfa plus the villages near it
Gabalfa is a residential suburb, so our vans head out to the town and to the villages by it on those same runs: Llandaff North, Pontcanna, Llandaff, Birchgrove and Maindy.
If yours isn't on this list that does not mean we never come — there are dedicated pages for the majority of places in Cardiff, and the ones named above are simply the immediate neighbours. Close to the boundary, or somewhere your phone can't find? Call us and ask rather than assuming.
The patch the page includes is on the map. Kerbside, forecourt, drive, car park: the lot is territory we cover, and none of that asks the vehicle to travel to us.
Stopped at the roadside anywhere around Gabalfa?
The chance to pull over somewhere sensible doesn't come to everyone. If you worked it out after setting off and finished up by the verge beside Colwill Road, or in a lay-by somewhere with your hazards on, that is a routine call for us instead of a rare one.
Whether you stay beside the car or keep clear of it hangs on whether staying nearby looks safe. It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that's the trouble: fire it up to get to somewhere better and the blend goes further into the system with every mile driven. We will bring our van to a difficult location without any fuss, and for the vehicle that is much better than carrying on.
A few miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?
Here is where the M4 comes in — under 3 miles away from Gabalfa. A misfuelled diesel will usually take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong, while the signs when they come are generally a drop in power, a lumpy idle and some smoke instead of a clean stop.
Get off at the next sensible exit, turn off, and do not restart the car to reposition. It alters what we bring, and so tell us when you phone: on a longer drive — anything close to the under 3 miles to the nearest city — take it the mixture has been through the filter, your pump and your injectors.
About Gabalfa
Gabalfa is a suburban area in Cardiff, situated on the banks of the River Taff at an elevation of around 16 metres. Gabalfa is located approximately 2.2 miles northwest of Cardiff city centre, near neighbouring areas such as Llandaff North, Pontcanna, and Llandaff. Gabalfa has a population of around 6194 people and is characterised by its predominantly semi-detached housing stock.
When our technicians reach you around Gabalfa: what follows
- The responses change the work, which is why we ask before quoting: what got in, how much of it, and if the engine has run.
- The contaminated fuel is drawn out of the tank.
- Lines rinsed, filter cleaned. Whatever remains afterwards isn't the thing that started the problem.
- The system gets primed, on new diesel.
- The motor is started and checked to confirm it runs correctly on fresh diesel.
The car is then ready for you to drive away. Our technicians do all of this wherever the car has ended up, which means it never has to be taken to a garage, and when it has been caught quickly, it is very uncommon for there to be permanent damage.
AdBlue in your diesel tank instead, in Gabalfa?
AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first rule is unchanged — the engine remains off — while this fault under it's a separate one altogether. Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and removes the protection the fuel system relies on. Corrosion and residue are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, as AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.
Usually the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the full story sits on its own Gabalfa page. Both are ours to deal with.
Gabalfa prices for a petrol-in-diesel drain
Our technicians cannot put one figure on this page truthfully, since the job is not one job. What moves it:
- Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
- The type of liquid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
- Where your car is, and whether our van can safely reach and work on it.
Tell us the vehicle, the quantity and whether it has run, and you'll get a straight answer rather than a range. For your car at home that's going nowhere and is not time-critical, is fine too.
Things we get about petrol in diesel in Gabalfa
At a petrol station in Gabalfa, can you do a fuel drain there?
A large portion of this work takes place there, so yes. We visit Texaco and the other forecourts around town all the time, with the station's consent — tell us which one you are at when you ring and we'll tell you whether our technicians can work there.
Is there a sensible amount of petrol in a diesel?
Ratio decides it instead of litres — and more than either, whether your motor has run. What settles how much work is required is if that blend has been sucked through the system — because even though five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different case from five in a full one, either way that is the query.
I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?
Stop somewhere sensible, switch off, and keep the vehicle off. Driving is what moves the problem from your tank into your pump and injectors — but it's recoverable a lot more frequently than drivers assume, and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart it.
Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?
No. Carried out correctly, draining and flushing is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one.
Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?
No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a distinct problem and it does not put back what petrol has weakened. Later? Still petrol in your tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.
A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?
There is no need to take it to a dealership, because our technicians drain and clean your car wherever it is.
Is the car still with you?
Shut off is the way it stays.
Switch it off somewhere safe then leave it off, if you have already driven it. Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. Drivers fear this a lot more than they need to.
