Petrol in Diesel

The Next Steps, in Order: Petrol in a Diesel Car in Gadlas

Whatever you do, don't switch your motor on, even briefly, to move the car. Stop; leave it off. Petrol in a diesel that has not been run is typically a simple drain and a flush, done right where your car sits, and what you do in the next few minutes decides that more than anything else. Here is the order of things from here, wherever you're in Gadlas.

Minute one: petrol in a diesel, motor off

In this order, and before everything else:

  • The ignition off, keys out. Turned on, your ignition can prime your system — and priming is what draws petrol out of your tank into the components it harms.
  • No diesel on top. More fuel in removes none of that petrol — it just makes you with more of the same mixture.
  • Near moving traffic? Then the hazard lights go on before anything else, so the car is simple to see.
  • By hand, not on the engine: that's how it leaves the petrol pump. Ask the forecourt staff to help you push, however short the mileage.
  • The first thing we will ask is which fuel you put in and about how much — and the till receipt says both. Hold on to it.

On the M53, under 25 miles from Gadlas, the next junction is the spot to leave the car; elsewhere, the first safe place to stop. Don't push on to the services. Then go back to stage one.

The fork in every Gadlas fuel drain: has it run yet?

From this point on, everything hinges on a single answer.

Engine never run at all?

  • The petrol remains in your tank, and only there.
  • A drain and flush, on the spot, is usually the whole job.
  • This is the best spot to be in, and the whole reason stage one matters.

If your motor has run, even for a moment:

  • Some petrol has left your tank by now, gone through the filter, and got into the fuel lines.
  • Your high-pressure pump as well as the injectors get it on a longer run.
  • The further it went, the larger this job — the lines, the filter, and now and then more besides.

Petrol doesn't lubricate. Diesel does, oiling your pump and injectors as it passes through, which is why the line sits where it does. Petrol sitting in a tank harms nothing. Pump that petrol, though, and it grinds down the very parts doing the moving.

Fuel drain of a diesel car in Gadlas, step by step

Before you call about petrol in a diesel around Gadlas: what our engineers need

Prepare a little, and the technician finds you rather than circling.

  • Your whereabouts: a postcode beginning SY12 9 serves best.
  • The street or the car park. A road name helps — Peever Close, or wherever you have pulled up.
  • Or the nearest landmark. A car park is quicker to find by what it serves, such as the one at The Co-operative Food.
  • Tell us what your car is — make, model — and confirm it's diesel.
  • Petrol or AdBlue? Say which. They are different jobs, and AdBlue has its own Gadlas page.
  • How much. Litres from your receipt, or how long the nozzle was in.
  • The distance it covered, and how heavily, if it has run at all.
  • Whose vehicle it is. Some hire or company agreements want the owner to authorise this work, and that's easier settled before we arrive than after.

Next, 0333 366 0103. Not pressing, the vehicle left at home with nowhere to be? Then will do as well.

Waiting for a fuel drain in Gadlas: what to do

In the wait, the harm comes from well-meant help — so these matter.

  • Stay with the vehicle if it is safe where it is — but if it has stopped somewhere dangerous, you come first: away from the traffic, waiting apart from it.
  • A kind passer-by doesn't start it. Nor does anyone wanting to check it still works, or rolling it a few yards.
  • Additives stay in the boot. Injector cleaner and two-stroke oil draw none of the petrol out again.
  • No DIY draining. Siphoning petrol into a can at the kerbside is hazardous, and it leaves your fuel that has already gone beyond that tank.
  • Not for your radio, not for the windows: your ignition stays off.

Van arrived? Your fuel drain, one stage at a time

  • First, three questions: which fuel got in, the amount, and has it run? Those answers set the job, so the price follows them.
  • Emptying it's how the blend gets taken out of that tank.
  • Petrol that has shifted beyond that tank sits in your lines if it ran, and your lines are flushed to clear it.
  • Cleaned, or replaced if the car has a workable one: the filter is dealt with next.
  • The fuel system is primed with clean diesel.
  • The first start on fresh diesel. Once priming is done, the motor is started and our engineers check that it runs smoothly.

We remain until it is running on clean diesel. Permanent damage is very uncommon if it has been caught early, so the car can go right back to normal use.

Once your fuel drain is done: driving around Gadlas once more

  • Drive normally. There is nothing special to do after it has been started on clean fuel.
  • Give the first miles your attention. Smoke appearing, a warning light coming on, your idle going lumpy or your throttle stumbling: pull over then call us back.
  • The work may come up later with a hire firm, an insurer or a fleet manager. Hold on to your documents.
  • The handle's colour isn't the thing to go by next time — the label on the pump is.
