Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Gadlys? Don't Start It
With that tank still holding the fuel and the motor not yet turned over, nearly every job takes only a drain, so keep your engine off. That outcome is decided in the minutes immediately after the fill-up, rather than by the amount that was put in. All over Gadlys and the rest of Rhondda Cynon Taf, Petrol in Diesel drains the vehicle and cleans it where it sits, whether by a roadside, on a driveway or at a forecourt. Phone before anything else starts, so you will learn what happens after that.
Now what? Petrol in a diesel, in turn
- Never fire it up. Turned on all the same? Then never rely on it. Diesel in a petrol car typically cannot run, so the motorist stops and the damage ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It moves off happily, for a couple of miles. Motorists get that reversed. It is not fine — your fuel system is wearing every mile you do.
- Flicking the ignition on often primes your system, and priming is what carries petrol out of your tank and into your pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps protected on its way through, before it burns. Petrol manages the burning and none of the protecting. Leave the ignition alone.
- Topping up clears nothing. It leaves you a larger tank of the same mixture, since a diesel fuel system does not handle petrol by percentage in the way that advice assumes — so do not add diesel on top to water down it. Octane is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.
- We'd rather come to a difficult location than have it started — so if you safely can, stay still. Nothing is simpler to deal with than a motor that has not moved. On the verge on Neville Terrace, that means hazards on then leave the vehicle.
- Check where you are before ringing. A postcode starting CF44 8, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the technician circles rather than arriving.
- Three details decide the whole call-out: the stuff you tipped in, the approximate volume of it, and whether anything has been going since. Our number is 0333 366 0103.
Never take it home. The commute has already put a real amount of petrol-thinned diesel through your high-pressure pump of your Volkswagen Golf, and the trip back would close to double it for no gain at all. Ring us from the platform if that is easier. Our technicians don't need you standing over the vehicle at Aberdare while our technicians get on, and we would much rather hear from you tonight than discover on Monday.
Hazards on. Motor off. Call us. It's twenty to nine at the gates of the local primary school, you are late, and the till receipt reads unleaded — and although three miles in the Skoda Octavia sounds like nothing, fuel is supplied to demand, and a rushed run needs plenty of it.
Your Mercedes C-Class stays where it is in the car park at Glandover Arms for the whole job, which typically runs like this. First we ask what got in, approximately how much, and whether the motor has run since, given that most of the work depends on those answers. That tank is emptied of the tainted mixture, the fuel lines are flushed, and the filter comes off if it's a serviceable one. With clean diesel in and your system primed, your car is started and tested, and once it is running correctly you drive away.
Leave the Ford Kuga near Little Theatre and call us. We're blunt about not driving on as a wearing pump gives off, and what it sheds travels onward with your fuel to the fuel injectors downstream.
By now that tank is the least of that. Run a diesel and that blend goes into the fuel filter, into the fuel lines, into your pump, into the rail — and none of that leaves with your tank contents. A diesel Peugeot 208 that made it by St John the Baptist wants its system purged. Clearing is not the same thing.
Can petrol be drained from your diesel at the forecourt?
It kicks off at the pump, generally. Regularly it finishes there too. We work on station forecourts all the time, with the station's consent, so if you are still at Tesco that's normally where the drain gets done.
The forecourt is the single setting this is halted before your motor has started. Fuel drawn out of the tank and through your filter, all the way to the high-pressure pump, is what occurs when your engine is started and your car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes the filter and your lines along with that tank. That's still not a catastrophe, and our technicians deal with it where the vehicle sits. What settles it is whether the key was reached for in the seconds after the till receipt was checked.
Attendants will normally chip in pushing it away from the pump, which lets the next driver get through. Take the offer. Firing the car just to shift four car lengths is not.
Can we reach your end of Gadlys?
Gadlys is a residential suburb, and so we are out to it and to anywhere around it on those same rounds: Aberdare, Robertstown, Trecynon, Abernant and Cwmdare.
Our engineers do come. Those names above are only the immediate neighbours, and a page exists for most towns across Rhondda Cynon Taf, so an absence from the list is not an absence from the coverage. Ring us and check instead of assuming, particularly when you are on a border or somewhere a satnav gets wrong.
That map outlines the area this page covers. Roadside, forecourt, driveway, car park: the lot is ground we work on, and none of that asks your vehicle to travel to us.
Roadside stops across Gadlys
Not everybody gets the chance to stop somewhere safe. A normal call for us rather than a rare one: noticed after setting off, finished up by the verge on Gadlys Road or at a lay-by with your hazards flashing.
Out of the vehicle when it's not sensible to wait in it, with it when it is. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol draws that blend further into the system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why your engine doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere handier. We will send our van to an awkward place without any fuss, and for your car that's a lot better than carrying on.
So you've driven it? Petrol in a diesel over a couple of miles
The M4 is the road which matters here, and it runs under 15 miles from Gadlys. It will often take you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it's smoke, a lumpy idle and power draining away — not a clean stop. Misfuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.
Take the first exit that's sensible, pull up there, and do not restart the vehicle to move it. Long drive? Anything close to the under 25 miles to the closest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it reached by the contamination. Say that on the phone, since it alters what goes in the van.
Where's Gadlys?
Gadlys is a suburban area situated on the riverside in Rhondda Cynon Taf, with a mix of terraced housing and local amenities. Gadlys sits at an elevation of 142 metres, near the towns of Aberdare, Robertstown, and Trecynon. Gadlys is located approximately 20 miles north of Cardiff, making it a commuter base for the city. Gadlys has a population of around 4725 people, living in a predominantly residential area.
The visit in Gadlys, step by step
- We ask first, quote after. What got in? How much? Has your motor run? Those answers shape what the work actually is.
- The contaminated mixture is drawn from your tank.
- Fuel lines are flushed through and your filter cleaned, leaving nothing in your system that created any of this.
- Fresh diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets primed.
- It's run with new diesel in it, and our engineers confirm that it is running smoothly.
The vehicle is then ready for you to pull away. There is no need for a workshop at any stage, as the work is all done where your car is, and when it is noticed soon, permanent damage is very rare.
AdBlue in a diesel tank in Gadlys is a different job
If what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the first step is the same — never fire it up — but the problem is not. Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and strips out the lubrication the system depends on. Corrosion and build-up are what a diesel tank gets instead, as AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.
Both are ours. There is a separate Gadlys page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.
Gadlys prices for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain
What changes the figure is laid out below, since this job isn't one job and our technicians cannot frankly put a single price on this page.
- Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
- Wrong fuel in, against what your tank holds — that proportion.
- Whether it is petrol or AdBlue.
- Whether a technician can sensibly reach the vehicle and work on it, which hinges on where the vehicle is.
Tell us what your car is, how much went in, and whether the engine has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range. Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is fine for that.
Gadlys motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel
Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Gadlys?
Yes — forecourts are where a good portion of this happens. Tell us which one you're at when you phone and we will tell you if our engineers can work there. With the owner's permission we work at Texaco and the other forecourts around town all the time.
Is there a safe quantity of petrol in a diesel?
Litres aren't the measure. Ratio is, and a lot more than either, it counts whether anything has been run. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is required is if that mixture has been pulled through the fuel system.
I put petrol in my diesel and drove the car. What now?
Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. Driving takes the issue along — out of the tank, into the pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one truly useful thing left to you is not restarting it.
Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties
No. Carried out correctly, emptying and flushing is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. What is likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the motor to remain off.
Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?
What petrol has diluted isn't restored by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a different issue. So no. Your tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and the pump still has to cope with it.
Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?
There's no need to take it to a main dealer, because we drain and flush the vehicle wherever it is.
You, and your vehicle, still together?
Never switch it on again.
Switch it off somewhere safe and leave it off, if you have already driven it. This is recoverable from far more regularly than motorists assume, and a parked, cold car is the best position to be in.
