Petrol in Diesel

Garth: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

If you have not fired up your engine yet, do not. A fuel drain and nothing else is nearly always what a motor requires while the petrol is still inside the tank and the engine has not been started, which is why it's the next few minutes that matter, not how much got in. Petrol in Diesel travels to your car wherever it has come to rest in Garth or the remainder of Gwynedd, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, and drains and flushes it there. Phone and we can show you what happens after that before you attempt much else.

Petrol in a diesel: what to do first

  • Give a petrol motor diesel and it will normally fail to run at all, so the motorist stops there and so does the harm. Feed a diesel petrol and the car starts, it idles, it moves off — fine enough for a few miles. Most people have that muddled, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So never crank it. And having started, do not depend on it: that fuel system is wearing whenever you drive.
  • Diesel combusts, and before it burns it greases — the high-pressure fuel pump, its injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave the car's ignition alone too: turning it on is frequently sufficient to prime that system, and priming moves petrol from the tank into precisely those parts.
  • That guidance supposes a diesel fuel system copes with petrol by percentage. It won't. Tip diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you end with is a bigger tank of the same mix. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • A vehicle that has never moved is the easiest one to sort, and so wait where you are if you safely can. Stopped on the verge on Castle View Terrace? Hazards on, and keep the vehicle there. An awkward spot works for us better than a started diesel.
  • Before you phone, gather your location. Anything next to you with a name on it, plus a postcode starting LL57 2 — that's what settles whether the technician arrives or circles.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Let us know what got in, about how many litres, and also whether the car has started. Those three replies decide the entire call-out.

Forecourt draining for petrol in a diesel

Much of this job begins at the pump, so a big share of that ends up finished there. Our technicians work on petrol station forecourts routinely, with the owner's agreement, so if you are still at BP that is normally where the drain takes place.

A forecourt is the single setting the mistake gets caught before your motor has started. We can still put it right where it stands, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, the car has been switched on and driven there, and that drew fuel through the filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump, all the way from your tank. None of that is a catastrophe, although the flush then has to reach past that tank to the fuel lines and the fuel filter, and the few seconds between seeing the till receipt and reaching for your key are what settle that.

Clear of the pump, the next driver can get through — so yes, let the staff help you push the car. Very much worth doing. Cranking it for four car lengths? Don't.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Garth

Diesel Renault Megane. A couple of litres of unleaded. Run a couple of miles. Shut off now, at M&S Simply Food. That's the phone call our engineers like, since the question beneath it is about quantity through your pump rather than hours on the clock.

A diesel pump meters fuel on demand, and a frantic morning dash needs plenty — so three miles in the Nissan Qashqai feels like nothing and is not. Twenty to nine at the gates of the local primary school, running late, a receipt in your hand reading unleaded: hazards on, engine off, ring us.

Here is the entire process. Diesel needs enough body to seal the tight tolerances it goes through, and petrol takes that away. That's it. Which accounts for the normal Roman Camp call — a diesel Dacia Duster, out there without fuss and back down on power, rough at idle, possibly a bit of smoke. Injection systems work hydraulically as well as chemically, so your fuel has to hold pressure and not just burn; weakened, it leaks past those gaps and not building, and delivery comes poorer, later, less even than the engine was engineered round. Not a failing motor, though. Fuel that has stopped behaving like diesel. Put that right and it stops.

About as well as this goes, once the motor has turned: away from the pumps, receipt read, and your diesel BMW 1 Series left by Canolfan Gymuned Garth / Garth Community Centre barely two streets on. Ring us, and leave the car off. A short distance does truly help. It was still a start and still a drive, though, and so the fuel filter and your pump have had diluted fuel through them — hence cleaning the lines rather than only emptying your tank.

Petrol in a diesel does its damage as a proportion, which is the reason our engineers ask at all: the same few litres sitting in a nearly empty tank make a far stronger mix than they would in a full one. And petrol is rated on how well it withstands igniting under pressure — the opposite of what a diesel wants — so a stronger blend rattles more, smokes more, goes flatter. None of which means you need an answer prepared. Nearly no one knows how full that tank was in a car collected two days ago, and we work that out on site. Do call the hire or company firm first, though: some agreements want them to approve the work, and that is far faster settled before than after. Then call us about the Ford Kuga near Bangor Swimming Pool.

Service around Garth

Being a residential suburb, Garth gets a regular call, while the places nearby go with it on that same journey: Hirael and Bangor, Upper Bangor and Maesgeirchen, Llandegfan.

Not on the list? That tells you nothing. The places above are just the closest few, and the majority of locations around Gwynedd have a page of their own elsewhere on our site. Close to the border, or somewhere your satnav struggles with? Call us to ask rather than presuming.

Check our map for the area included on this page. Roadside, forecourt, drive, car park: every bit of that is territory we serve, and none of it requires the vehicle to travel to us.

Stranded by the roadside around Garth

Some drivers find no suitable spot to pull in at all. Hazards flashing in a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge of Upper Garth Road as you noticed after setting off — we take that call regularly enough that it is the ordinary kind.

Whether you remain with the car or stand away from it turns on whether staying in it is safe. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags that blend further into the fuel system — and oblige it usually will, which is why the motor doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere handier. However difficult the spot, it is no bother for us to come to it, and that's far better for the vehicle than driving on.

Run it already? Pull in, then check this

This is where the local Moreton Spur matters, under 50 miles from Garth. It will frequently get you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it's smoke, an uneven idle and power ebbing away — not a clean stop. Misfuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Take the next junction that is safe, stop there, and never start the vehicle to move it. Long drive? Anything near the under a mile to the closest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that reached by the contamination. Say that on the phone, since it changes what goes in our van.

Garth itself

Garth is a small suburban area situated on the coast of northwest Wales, near the city of Bangor. Garth lies at an elevation of around 25 metres, with terraced housing being the predominant type of accommodation in the area. Garth is close to nearby places such as Hirael and Upper Bangor, and is approximately 206.5 miles from London. Garth has a population of around 2472 residents.

Once our technicians reach you in Garth: what we do

  • Our technicians ask first, price after. What was put in? How much? Has your engine run? Those responses shape what the work actually is.
  • The contaminated mixture is drawn from the tank.
  • Our technicians purge the fuel lines and clear the fuel filter, and so what's remaining in the fuel system is not what started the issue.
  • We put fresh diesel in and prime the system.
  • Our engineers turn it on and make sure it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.

From that point, you're ready to set off. We do everything wherever your car has come to a stop, which means it never has to be taken to a garage, and when it has been noticed quickly, it's very rare for there to be long-term damage.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Garth is a separate job

The problem is not the same, though the opening step is — do not crank it — if what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol. Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and takes away the lubrication the fuel system relies on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with your diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus residue.

Often the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the detail lives on its own Garth page. Both are ours to deal with.

Paying for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Garth

Frankly, no single figure belongs on a page like this. This job changes. Here is what changes it:

  • This is the key one: whether the engine has been started, or driven.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
  • AdBlue or petrol, whichever went in.
  • Where is it? And can a technician get to it and work there sensibly?

Tell us your vehicle, the quantity and if it has run, and you'll get a straight answer instead of a range. If it is not time-critical — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — works too.

Things we hear about petrol in diesel around Garth

Fuel drains on a Garth petrol station forecourt

Much of what our engineers do gets done nowhere else. So yes. Routinely, provided the site agrees: Asda, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that place is something we answer straight away.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Proportion decides it rather than litres — and more than either, whether the motor has run. What settles how much work is required is whether that mixture has been pulled through your fuel system — since though five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate matter from five in a full one, either way that's the question.

I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Turn off somewhere safe, then keep it that way after you stop. Driving moves the issue along — out of the tank, into the pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one genuinely helpful thing left to you is not restarting it.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A drain then flush carried out correctly isn't a modification and does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a dispute with one, which is another reason to leave the car switched off.

Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a distinct problem and it does not restore what petrol has diluted. Petrol remains in that tank afterwards, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no respite from it.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?

No. Our technicians drain and flush the vehicle wherever it is, so there's no need to take it to a dealership.

Still with the vehicle?

Leave it switched off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, turn off, and no restarting the vehicle afterwards. Cold and stationary, a motor is in the best place available — and drivers fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.

At the roadside, on the forecourt or at home — on-site fuel draining in Garth and throughout Gwynedd.
