Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Garthdee?

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled vehicles where they are, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, across Garthdee and the remainder of Aberdeen City. The first thing to do is not to fire up your engine. When the motor has not yet turned over and the fuel is still inside your tank, a tank drain is nearly always all it takes, and the following few minutes decide that, not how much got in. Contact us before everything else starts, and you'll learn what happens next.

Your first five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • Don't fire it up. Turned on anyway? Then don't trust it. Diesel in a petrol car normally will not run, so the driver stops and the harm stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It moves off normally, for a couple of miles. People get that confused. It's not okay — your fuel system is wearing every mile you drive.
  • Switching the ignition on commonly primes the system, and priming is what draws petrol out of your tank then into your pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps protected on its way through, before it combusts. Petrol does the burning and none of the lubricating. Leave the ignition be.
  • Never put diesel on top to dilute it. A diesel fuel system won't tolerate petrol by percentage the way that advice assumes, and topping up clears nothing — it only leaves you a fuller tank of the same mix. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • We would sooner get to a difficult spot than have it started — so if you reasonably can, stay still. Nothing is simpler to deal with than a car that has never shifted. On the verge on Ramsay Crescent, that means hazards on and leave the vehicle.
  • Find out where you are before ringing. A postcode that starts AB10 7, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise the technician circles instead of showing up.
  • Three replies shape the entire visit: the stuff you put in, the ballpark measure of it, plus if anything has been going since. Our number is 0333 366 0103.

Your high-pressure pump did that morning drive labouring on a liquid that had given up most of the protection it is built around. Diesel protects that pump, and your injectors with it, before any of the fuel ignites; petrol does the burning and none of the oiling. So imagine a diesel Skoda Octavia, fuelled at quarter past eight, taken in to work, and left standing at Aberdeen until the penny drops somewhere around eleven. Three hours of sitting have changed nothing about it. The couple of miles before that did a lot, which is why the thing our engineers ask you is about mileage instead of time. Phone us. Leave it right where it is.

How far, and how hard? The second of those counts more than the first, so have both prepared. Your Audi A4 will have felt entirely normal on the way back from the local primary school — they all do, and that's the snag. Diesel into a petrol vehicle mostly won't run at all: the person stops, and so does the harm. Petrol into a diesel starts, idles, drives off like nothing happened, whilst the high-pressure fuel pump gets on with its work minus the lubrication the fuel should be giving it. No warning arrives, as behind the wheel nothing looks wrong.

Do not risk it. The journey home from Brig 'O' Dee is perfectly possible, which is precisely the problem — a thinned tank doesn't stop a diesel starting or pulling away, it just wears down the components the fuel is supposed to lubricate. Ring us, and let the Mercedes C-Class stay where it sits.

Happy on the way out, sluggish on the way back. If that is how the trip to Aberdeenshire Cricket Club went, that tank is where to look. Petrol thins diesel, and thinner fuel slips past the close-fitting components that are supposed to build injection pressure — so the farther your Peugeot 3008 travelled, the less well it held that pressure. Pull over somewhere sensible, turn off and call us.

Somebody confident will tell you to drain it and put clean diesel in. Half right, that. Try it on a diesel Kia Sportage close to RGU SPORT and the motor will start — which is precisely why it sounds like sense. Here is the catch: there's petrol left in the fuel filter and the feed lines, and the first thing the engine does is suck it back through the pump again. Emptying a tank achieves nothing about fuel that already left that tank. Ring us. Your system gets cleaned, the fuel filter comes off where there's one worth removing, and that's what separates a repaired car from one that only starts.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Garthdee

Forecourt drains for petrol in a diesel

Much of this work begins at a forecourt, meaning a fair share of that ends up finished at one. We work on petrol station forecourts regularly, with the owner's consent, and so if you are still at Sainsbury's that is typically where the drain takes place.

At a garage, this gets spotted with the engine never run, and nowhere else manages that. The few seconds between checking your receipt and going for the key decide how much needs flushing. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — your car was switched on and moved to get there, so fuel was sucked from that tank, through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means your lines and the fuel filter need flushing as well as your tank. It's not a disaster, and we can still deal with it where the vehicle sits.

Wheel the vehicle out of the way if the staff offer, and they normally will. The next motorist gets by the pump, and that is worth doing. Four car lengths isn't worth the risk.

Do our engineers reach your end of Garthdee?

Those same journeys get us to Kaimhill, Braeside, Mannofield, Seafield and Ruthrieston along with Garthdee, which is a residential suburb.

Our engineers still come. The names above are only the nearest neighbours, and a page is there for nearly all locations in Aberdeen City, so an absence from the list isn't an absence from our coverage. Presuming is the mistake to avoid, above all on the boundary or anywhere your satnav struggles. Phone and enquire.

See our map for the patch shown on this page. Kerbside, forecourt, driveway, car park: the lot is territory we serve, and none of it asks the car to travel to us.

Roadside call-outs around Garthdee

Not everybody gets a suitable spot to pull over. Hazards going in a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge of Garthdee Drive as you worked it out after setting off — our engineers take that call so often that it's the ordinary kind.

Out of your car while it isn't sensible to sit inside, by it if it is. Don't fire it up to get to a better spot. It'll go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls that mixture deeper into the fuel system. We will send the van to a tricky place without any trouble, and for your car that's a lot better than pressing on.

A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

This is where the M90 matters, over 50 miles away from Garthdee. A misfuelled diesel will usually take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong, and the symptoms when they come are normally a loss of power, a lumpy idle and some smoke rather than a clean stop.

Do not restart it to reposition. Come off at the first safe junction and turn off. On a longer trip — anything near the under 3 miles to the nearest city — assume the contamination has been through the filter, the pump and the injectors, and say so when you ring. It affects what we bring.

About Garthdee

Garthdee is a suburban area in Aberdeen City, situated near the coast and approximately 2.4 miles from Aberdeen city centre. Garthdee has a mix of housing types, but semi-detached homes are predominant in the area. Garthdee sits at an elevation of 34 metres, overlooking the surrounding landscape. Garthdee is close to nearby places such as Kaimhill, Braeside, and Mannofield.

When we reach you around Garthdee: what follows

  • The replies change the work, which is why our engineers ask before pricing: what went in, how much of that, and whether your motor has run.
  • Out flows the tainted fuel.
  • Fuel lines are purged through and your filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the fuel system that caused any of this.
  • Priming follows, once new diesel is in.
  • It is started with fresh diesel in it, and we check that it is running correctly.

After that it is ready to drive away. We do everything wherever your car has come to a stop, which means it never has to be taken to a garage, and if it has been caught quickly, it is very unusual for there to be lasting damage.

A different matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Garthdee

The fault isn't the same, though the opening step is — don't start it — if what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Petrol dilutes the diesel and removes the lubrication the system depends on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus residue.

Frequently the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the details lives on its own Garthdee page. Both are ours to handle.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain around Garthdee?

One figure would not be fair here, since this is not one job. These are the things that change it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, weighed against how much the tank takes.
  • Which went in: unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where the vehicle is, and if a van can safely get to and work on it.

The vehicle, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight rather than as a range. For your car at home that is going nowhere and is not urgent, is fine too.

Questions our engineers hear about petrol in diesel around Garthdee

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Garthdee?

A big share of this work happens there, so yes. Tell us which one you are at when you call and we will tell you whether our technicians can work there. With the site's permission our engineers visit Asda and the other forecourts around town regularly.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

It rests on the ratio instead of the litres, and a lot more on whether the motor has run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is required is if that blend has been sucked through the fuel system.

Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What then?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. Driving moves the trouble along — out of that tank, into your pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one truly useful thing left to you isn't restarting it.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain then flush done to a good standard, which is no change at all. Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

What petrol has weakened isn't put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a separate fault. So no. Your tank still has petrol in it after that, and your pump still has to live with it.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

No. We drain and flush the car wherever it is, so there's no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.

Is your vehicle still with you?

Leave the car turned off.

Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere sensible, turn off, and let the car stay that way. Cold, still, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. Motorists fear this a lot more than they need to.
