Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Gateshead? Don't Start It

With your tank still carrying the fuel and your engine not yet turned over, nearly every job takes only a drain, so leave the engine off. That outcome is determined in the minutes immediately after filling up, rather than by the amount that went in. Across Gateshead and the remainder of Tyne and Wear, Petrol in Diesel drains the car and flushes it where it is, whether at a roadside, on a drive or at a forecourt. Just one ring to us will be plenty: our engineers can explain what follows from here. Try it right away.

Your first five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • Feed a petrol motor diesel and it will typically not run at all, and so the driver stops there and so does the harm. Feed a diesel petrol and the car starts, it idles, it pulls away — all right for a couple of miles. Drivers have that reversed, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So never start the vehicle. And once started, never rely on it: the fuel system is wearing down whenever you drive.
  • Leave your ignition alone also. Diesel has two tasks: it burns, and before it ignites it lubricates the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors. Petrol handles the first but not the second. Turning your ignition on is commonly sufficient to prime the system, which moves that petrol out of that tank and into precisely those components.
  • That advice supposes a diesel fuel system handles petrol by percentage. It won't. Tip diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you have is a bigger tank of the same mixture. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.
  • Stay put if it's wise to. Hazards on, engine off, leave it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Prince Consort Road, anywhere — a difficult place for us is better than a started engine, and nothing is quicker for us to deal with than a motor that never moved.
  • Find out where you are before phoning. A postcode starting NE8 1, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise the van circles rather than showing up.
  • Phone 0333 366 0103. Anticipate three queries — what went in, approximately how many litres, and whether the motor has been turned over. The responses shape all that comes after.

Quarter past eight, a quick fill-up on the drive in, and it dawns on you around eleven — by then the diesel Skoda Octavia has been sitting outside Newcastle for three hours. Phone and leave the vehicle right where it sits. The run in is the bit that is key now, as diesel performs two tasks on its way through the engine: it burns, and before it combusts it greases that high-pressure pump and the injectors. Petrol handles the first and not the second. So those few miles were covered with the pump working on a fuel that had given up a lot of the protection it is designed around — which is why the question our engineers ask is how many miles you went, not how long your car has been standing.

If you have put petrol in your diesel Peugeot 308 in Gateshead and you're now stuck outside EEF with a boot full of shopping, phone us. Never start the vehicle again to leave that bay. Our technicians will head your way, drain your tank, rinse the fuel lines then put new diesel in so you can drive away. A mile or so at light throttle pulls very little diesel, which is why those are often the simple ones.

How far, and how hard? The second of those counts more than the first, and so have both ready. The Audi A4 will have felt perfectly normal on the way back from St Joseph's Catholic Primary School, Gateshead — they all do, and that's the catch. Diesel into a petrol motor generally will not run at all: the driver stops, and so does the damage. Petrol into a diesel starts, idles, pulls away like nothing happened, while the high-pressure fuel pump gets on with its work minus the protection your fuel should be giving it. No warning appears, as behind the wheel nothing seems wrong.

Draining your BMW 1 Series, changing your filter where there is a serviceable one, cleaning the fuel lines, putting fresh fuel through the entire system: that's the job, and it is shaped by the worst of that resting in the lines instead of in the tank by this point. Three things help when you phone from near St Joseph's Church — which side the filler is on, whether a van can pull up beside without blocking the road, and if the motor has run since you filled up. On-street is the commonest location we work, so the spot itself is rarely the problem. A tight parking space beats a vehicle driven somewhere more convenient.

A throttle gone soft, white smoke, a ragged idle, clattering: that is a misfuelled diesel Vauxhall Astra telling you what is wrong. Never restart it to find a better spot — switch off where you have stopped, by Changing Lines or anywhere else.

Clearing petrol from your diesel on the forecourt

A big portion of this job is completed at a forecourt, as that's where it usually kicks off. Still at Esso? Then that is usually where it gets done. Petrol station forecourts are routine for us, with the agreement of the owner.

At a forecourt, this gets spotted with the motor never fired, and no place else does it. Fuel sucked out of the tank and through the fuel filter, all the way to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what happens when your engine is switched on and the car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes the fuel filter and the lines as well as your tank. That's still not a catastrophe, and our engineers sort it out where the vehicle sits. What settles it is whether the key was turned in the seconds after the till receipt was checked.

Clear of the petrol pump, the next motorist can get past — so yes, let the staff help you move the car. Very much worth it. Cranking the car for four vehicle lengths? No.

Will we reach your corner of Gateshead?

Gateshead is a riverside town, so our technicians are out to the town and to anywhere by it on those same rounds: Shipcote, Mount Pleasant, East Gateshead, Bensham and Teams.

Our engineers still come. Those names above are just the nearest neighbours, and a page exists for nearly all locations around Tyne and Wear, and so an absence from the list is not an absence from our coverage. Phone and check instead of assuming, particularly when you're on the border or somewhere the satnav struggles with.

This map is the patch the page spans. Every bit of that is territory our technicians work: a roadside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You don't move your vehicle anywhere.

Stuck on the roadside around Gateshead

Not everyone gets the chance to pull over anywhere safe. A normal call for us instead of an unusual one: realised after setting off, finished up along the verge on Regent Terrace or in a lay-by with the hazard lights flashing.

Okay right there? Stay with it. Not safe? Climb out and clear of it. It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that's the problem: restart it to reach somewhere better and that blend goes further into the system with every mile travelled. However difficult the place, it is no trouble for us to come to it, and that's far better for your car than carrying on.

Some miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?

This is where your Central Motorway East comes into it — under a mile from Gateshead. A drop in power, a lumpy idle, smoke: those are the symptoms when they appear, rather than a neat stop — and a misfilled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong at all.

Come off at the next sensible junction, turn off, and don't restart the vehicle to move it. Assume the worst of that on a long trip. Anything close to the under 3 miles to the nearest city, and the mixture has been through the fuel filter, through your pump, through the injectors. Say so when you call. What we bring alters.

Where is Gateshead?

Gateshead is a significant urban centre situated on the southern side of the River Tyne in northeast England. As a town in Tyne and Wear, it forms part of a larger metropolitan area. Gateshead is known for its riverside location, which has played a major role in shaping the town's history and character. The town is a notable settlement in the region, with a substantial population.

What our engineers do when our technicians reach you around Gateshead

  • Our engineers check what was put in, how much, and whether the engine has run. The replies shape the work, which is why we ask before pricing.
  • The contaminated mixture comes from that tank.
  • What is remaining in the fuel system shouldn't be what created the problem, so your fuel lines get flushed and the filter cleared.
  • The system gets bled, on fresh diesel.
  • Your engine is started and checked to confirm it runs smoothly on new diesel.

That has your car ready to drive away. We do all of it wherever the car has come to a stop, which means it never needs to go to a garage, and if it has been spotted early, it is very uncommon for there to be long-term damage.

AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, in Gateshead?

The problem is not the same, though the first step is — never fire it up — if what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and strips out the protection your fuel system relies on. AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it brings corrosion and residue in its place.

AdBlue removal in Gateshead has a page of its own with the details on it, including why it's frequently the more significant of the two. We handle both.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain around Gateshead?

One price wouldn't be fair here, as this is not one job. These are the things that move it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, compared with how much your tank takes.
  • Which got in: unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Whether a van can safely get to your car and work on it, which depends on where the car is.

A firm answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: the car, the quantity, and whether it has run. For the car at home that's going nowhere and isn't urgent, is fine too.

Petrol in diesel: frequent questions around Gateshead

Fuel drains on a Gateshead petrol station forecourt

Yes, and it's where a fair share of this work takes place. Tell us which one you are at when you call and we will tell you if our technicians can work there. With the station's agreement our technicians visit Shell and the other forecourts locally all the time.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Litres aren't the measure. Ratio is, and much more than either, it matters if anything has been run. Five litres into an almost dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that blend been pulled right through, or has it not?

I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Pull over somewhere sensible, switch off, then keep the car off. Driving shifts the issue along — out of the tank, into your pump and injectors. People fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one truly useful thing left to you is not restarting the vehicle.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain then flush done to a proper standard, which is no modification at all. A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

What petrol has thinned isn't replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old fix for a distinct fault. So no. Later? Still petrol in that tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Not at all. Our technicians drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is, so there's no need to bring it to a dealership.

Standing next to it?

Leave it switched off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, switch off, and no restarting the car afterwards. Cold and still, a car is in the best position available — and motorists fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.
