Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Giggleswick?

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled cars where they stand, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, throughout Giggleswick and the remainder of North Yorkshire. The very first thing to do is not to fire up the engine. While the motor has not yet run and the fuel is still in the tank, a fuel drain is almost always all it takes, and the next few minutes settle that, not how much was put in. Our technicians can show you what the next step will be. Call us — it happens before anything else.

Now what? Petrol in a diesel, step by step

  • Give a petrol engine diesel and it will generally not run at all, and so the driver stops there and so does the wear. Give a diesel petrol and the car starts, it ticks over, it drives off — all right for a few miles. Most people have that muddled, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So do not fire it up. And once started, do not depend on it: your fuel system is grinding while you drive.
  • Two jobs, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps your injection pump and injectors oiled. Petrol only does the one. Which is why your ignition remains off as well — flick it on and you usually prime the system, and that's petrol exiting the tank for exactly those parts.
  • Never put diesel on top to water down it. A diesel fuel system will not handle petrol by percentage in the way that guidance implies, and topping up removes nothing — it just gives you a larger tank of the same mix. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • A motor that hasn't shifted is the quickest one to sort, and so stay where you are if you safely can. Stopped on the verge on Bankwell Road? Hazards on, then keep it there. An odd spot works for us better than a started engine.
  • Before you dial, work out your whereabouts. Anything nearest to you with a label on it, plus a postcode that starts BD24 0 — that's what decides whether the technician shows up or circles.
  • Phone 0333 366 0103. Expect three questions — what was put in, roughly how much, and if the motor has been started. Your answers decide whatever happens next.

The journey in is what sucked diluted diesel through your pump. Sitting still has pulled nothing. Petrol in a diesel Renault Clio, left at Settle all day, waits dormant in the tank while it waits. Ring us first — before the keys turn.

Put diesel in a petrol car and usually it won't run, so the person stops there and the damage stops with them. Swap it — petrol into a diesel — and the engine fires up, idles and moves off as though nothing had happened, while the high-pressure fuel pump works without the protection the fuel is supposed to be providing. That is the catch, and it's why the diesel Nissan Qashqai will have seemed perfectly normal coming back from Giggleswick Primary School. They always do. From behind the wheel there's nothing to caution you about, and so nothing tells you. Phone with approximately how far you went, and how hard; the second one counts more than the first.

Out there happy, back sluggish. If that was the run to Settle Cricket Club, look at the tank. Diesel gets thinned by petrol, and thin fuel leaks past the tight clearances supposed to build injection pressure — so every extra mile the diesel Mercedes A-Class covered, the less pressure it held onto. Somewhere sensible, switch off, ring us.

The pump rests ahead of the fuel injectors, so whatever a wearing one loses passes on with your fuel — which is why we're blunt about not driving on. Ring us, then leave your diesel Kia Sportage where it is close to St Alkelda's.

The smaller petrol nozzle goes into a current diesel filler neck with practically no resistance at all, which makes this mechanical not careless. New locations see most of it for that reason. So: topped up by Low Moo without thinking, in a diesel Skoda Superb you have had for two days? Ring us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars tend to get driven further before anyone realises, and mileage determines how much petrol gets to the injectors.

At the forecourt: clearing petrol from your diesel

A good part of the job gets completed at a forecourt, because that's where it often kicks off. Still at Asda Express? Then that's normally where it takes place. Garage forecourts are everyday for us, with the agreement of the site.

Before the engine has run — the forecourt is the one place it is stopped. Our engineers can still deal with it where it sits, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, your car has been fired up and driven there, and that sucked fuel through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure pump, right from that tank. None of that is a calamity, but the flush then has to go past your tank to the fuel lines and the fuel filter, and the few seconds between checking your receipt and reaching for the key are what determine that.

The attendants will normally happily roll the car away from the petrol pump so the next driver can get by. That is worth doing. Shifting the car four lengths doesn't justify cranking the engine.

Giggleswick and the areas beside it

As a village, Giggleswick has a frequent call, while the areas nearby go along on that same trip: Settle and Upper Settle, Stackhouse and Langcliffe, Little Stainforth.

Not on this list? That says nothing. The names above are just the nearest few, and most places across North Yorkshire have a page of their own elsewhere on this site. Contact us and check instead of assuming, above all when you are on a border or anywhere your satnav can't find.

This map shows the ground this page includes. The lot is ground we cover: a roadside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You don't drive the vehicle anywhere.

Broken down on the roadside near Giggleswick

Some people get no sensible place to pull in at all. Hazards going at a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge of Belle Hill as you noticed after setting off — our technicians take that call regularly enough that it is the usual kind.

Sit with the motor while it's sensible to sit there, yet out of the car when it is not. Do not fire it up to reach a nicer location. It will go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging draws the mix deeper into your fuel system. Our van heading to a tricky place is no problem for us, and it's far better for the vehicle than driving on.

Some miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

The M65 is the one which matters now, and it sits under 25 miles from Giggleswick. It will usually get you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it's smoke, a rough idle and power falling away — not a neat stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Don't restart it to reposition. Get off at the next safe exit and turn off. On a longer trip — anything close to the under 25 miles to the nearest city — assume the petrol has been through the fuel filter, your pump and the injectors, and mention it when you phone. It changes what we bring.

Where's Giggleswick?

Giggleswick is a village situated in the picturesque riverside setting of North Yorkshire, with the village centre at an elevation of around 150 metres. Giggleswick lies near the towns of Settle and Lancaster, with the village itself comprising predominantly terraced housing. Giggleswick is located approximately 20 miles from Lancaster and 199 miles from London, making it a rural community with a strong sense of local identity.

When our technicians arrive with you in Giggleswick: what follows

  • The responses alter the work, which is why we ask before quoting: what went in, how much of that, and if the engine has run.
  • Our engineers drain your tank of the tainted mixture.
  • What is left in your system shouldn't be what started the trouble, so the fuel lines get cleaned and the filter cleared.
  • The system gets primed, on clean diesel.
  • When it is started, we check it runs correctly on clean diesel.

Your car is then ready for you to pull away. Long-term damage is very rare when it has been spotted soon, and as all of it is done where your car is, it never needs to go to a workshop.

AdBlue in your diesel tank instead, in Giggleswick?

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening step is unchanged — your engine stays off — whereas the problem beneath it's a different one altogether. Petrol thins the diesel and removes the protection your fuel system depends on. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it brings corrosion and build-up in its place.

Our engineers handle both, and AdBlue removal around Giggleswick has its own page with the detail — including why it's often the more serious of the two.

Giggleswick prices for a petrol-in-diesel drain

Our engineers cannot put one number on this page honestly, as the job is not one job. What shifts it:

  • Has it been run or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what that tank takes — that ratio.
  • The sort of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where your vehicle is, and whether our van can sensibly get to and work on it.

A clear answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: your vehicle, the quantity, and if it has run. For the car at home that is going nowhere and is not urgent, works too.

Petrol in diesel queries from Giggleswick drivers

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Giggleswick?

Plenty of what we do gets done nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you're at when you phone and we'll tell you if our technicians can work there. With the site's permission our engineers work at another forecourt nearby and the other forecourts nearby routinely.

Is there a sensible quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Whether your motor has run counts far more, though the proportion counts too, rather than the litres. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is required is whether that mixture has been sucked through the system.

Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? Now what?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Driving shifts the problem along — out of the tank, into the pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one genuinely valuable thing left to you is not restarting the vehicle.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

It isn't a modification, and so a drain and flush carried out correctly does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one, which is another good reason to leave the vehicle switched off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a separate issue and it does not put back what petrol has thinned. That tank still has petrol in it later on, and your pump still has to cope with it.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

You don't need one. The car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.

Still with your vehicle?

Keep the car switched off.

Switch it off somewhere sensible then leave it off, if you have already driven it. Cold, still, going nowhere: that is the best position to be in. Motorists fear this a lot more than they need to.
