Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Gildersome? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled cars where they are, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, throughout Gildersome and the rest of West Yorkshire. The first thing to do is not to fire up the engine. While the motor has not yet turned over and the fuel is still sitting in that tank, a drain is almost always all it needs, and the coming few minutes decide that, not how much went in. Phone before all else happens, and you'll learn what follows next.

Petrol in a diesel: what to do first

  • Never start it — and do not believe it when it starts. Here is the part people get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol engine filled with diesel usually just cannot run, so the motorist stops and the wear stops with them. A diesel filled with petrol usually starts, idles and drives away without complaint for several miles. It's not all right. It is grinding that fuel system whenever you drive.
  • Leave the ignition be as well. Diesel has two tasks: it burns, and before it ignites it greases that high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors. Petrol handles the first but not the second. Switching the ignition on is usually sufficient to prime that system, which carries that petrol out of that tank then into exactly those components.
  • Topping up gets rid of nothing. It leaves you a bigger tank of the same mix, because a diesel fuel system does not cope with petrol by percentage as that guidance assumes — so do not add diesel on top to dilute it. Type is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • A car that has not shifted is the simplest one to sort, and so wait where you are if you sensibly can. Parked on the verge on Street Lane? Hazards on, and keep it there. A difficult place suits us better than a started engine.
  • A van turning up instead of circling depends on two things: a postcode beginning LS27 7, and whatever is closest to you with a sign on it. Get both prepared before you dial.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three queries — what was put in, roughly how much, plus if the engine has been run. Those responses settle whatever happens next.

Nothing about the time since has lost you anything. Fuel in a tank is inert, and so a diesel Volkswagen Golf sitting at Morley this morning is no worse at five than it was at nine — what drew thinned diesel through your pump was the run in. Phone us before you set off to fetch the car.

Diesel Renault Megane. A few litres of unleaded. Driven a couple of miles. Shut off now, at The Co-operative Food. That's the phone call our engineers hope for, because the point beneath it is about amount through your pump rather than hours on the clock.

Out there happy, back gutless. If that was the run to Gildercome Cricket Club & Taverners, look at your tank. Diesel gets thinned by petrol, and thin fuel slips past the fine clearances supposed to build injection pressure — so every additional mile the diesel Mercedes C-Class covered, the less pressure it held onto. Somewhere safe, turn off, ring us.

Seldom the problem, the location. On-street is the usual spot our technicians work, and a cramped parking space is far preferable to a car that has been driven somewhere more convenient. What does help, when you ring from near St Peter's Church, is three things: the side the filler is on, whether a technician can stand next to without blocking the road, and if anything has run since you filled up. Then the Audi A3 gets cleared, the filter changed where a serviceable one exists, the fuel lines flushed and fresh fuel put through the entire circuit — as by now the worst of that is in the lines, not that tank.

What takes place next is the problem. The engine straight away sucks the petrol still sitting in the filter and the feed lines back round through your pump a second time, as draining a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Drain it and put fresh diesel in, someone confident will tell you — and that advice is half true, since do it to a diesel Vauxhall Insignia parked up, Gildersome Library say, and the thing starts, which is what makes it sound plausible. Call us instead. Our technicians flush the circuit and take the fuel filter off where your vehicle has a working one, and that is the difference between the vehicle being fixed and the vehicle simply starting.

At the forecourt: removing petrol from a diesel

A good share of the work gets done at a forecourt, because that's where it often begins. The drain usually takes place on the spot. Still on the forecourt at Esso? Given the site's agreement, that is somewhere our technicians work, and routinely.

Nowhere but a forecourt can it be halted with your motor still untouched. Fuel pulled out of your tank and through your filter, right to the high-pressure pump, is what happens when the motor is fired up and your car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush covers the filter and the fuel lines as well as the tank. That's still not a catastrophe, and our technicians deal with it where the vehicle is. What decides it is whether the ignition was turned in the seconds after your receipt was read.

Attendants will usually pitch in pushing it out from the pump, which lets the next motorist get through. Welcome the assistance. Cranking it just for four car lengths? Don't.

Coverage around Gildersome

Gildersome is a village, so our vans go out to the town and to the areas around it on those same rounds: Scott Green, Gildersome Street, Moor Head, Cockersdale and Upper Moor Side.

Our technicians still come. The names above are merely the closest neighbours, and a page exists for nearly all places across West Yorkshire, and so an absence from the list is not an absence from the coverage. Phone and enquire instead of guessing — borders particularly, and anywhere a satnav may misread.

Use our map for the patch covered on this page. Your car doesn't need to move to us. We operate throughout all of that — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Stranded at the kerbside somewhere around Gildersome?

Not everybody has the opportunity to pull over somewhere sensible. Hazards flashing at a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge beside Church Street as you worked it out after setting off — our technicians take that call often enough that it is the usual kind.

Remain beside your car if it is wise to be in it, but out of the vehicle if it is not. Do not fire up your engine to nurse the vehicle somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging the blend further into the fuel system. However difficult the spot, it's no problem for us to get to it, and that's far better for the vehicle than carrying on.

A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

under a mile out of Gildersome, the local M621 is what matters now. It will frequently get you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it's smoke, a lumpy idle and power falling away — not a tidy stop. Misfilled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Get off at the next safe junction, turn off, and don't start the car to reposition. Presume the worst of that on a long run. Anything close to the under 5 miles to the nearest city, and the petrol has been through the fuel filter, through your pump, through the injectors. Tell us when you call. What our technicians bring differs.

Where's Gildersome?

Gildersome is a village in West Yorkshire, situated near the River Calder and close to the city of Leeds. Gildersome sits at an elevation of 159 metres, with semi-detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation. Gildersome is located near several smaller communities, including Scott Green and Gildersome Street. Gildersome has a population of approximately 4063 residents.

What follows when our engineers get to you in Gildersome

  • We check what went in, how much, and if your engine has run. The responses shape the work, which is why our technicians ask before giving a price.
  • Away goes the polluted mixture.
  • Lines flushed, filter cleared. Whatever is left later on is not the thing that created the trouble.
  • We pour new diesel in and prime the fuel system.
  • It is fired up with fresh diesel in it, and our engineers make sure that it's running properly.

The car is then ready for you to pull away. Our engineers do all of this wherever the car has come to a stop, which means it never has to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been noticed quickly, it's very rare for there to be permanent damage.

A distinct matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Gildersome

If what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the opening step is unchanged — don't crank it — but this issue isn't. Weakened diesel, and no protection left for your fuel system that relies on it. That is petrol. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to rust and residue.

AdBlue removal in Gildersome has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it's often the more significant of the two. We deal with both.

Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel drain around Gildersome

Frankly, no single price belongs on a page like this. The job differs. Here is what varies it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, weighed against how much your tank holds.
  • Which got in: petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can our van reach it and work there sensibly?

Tell us what the car is, how much got in, and if the engine has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range. Not urgent, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

Petrol in diesel: common questions around Gildersome

At a petrol station in Gildersome, can you do a fuel drain there?

Plenty of what our engineers do takes place nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you are at when you phone and we will tell you whether our engineers can work there. With the owner's agreement our engineers visit another forecourt nearby and the other forecourts around town all the time.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Litres aren't the yardstick. Ratio is, and far more than either, it matters whether anything has been run. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is required is whether that mixture has been pulled through your fuel system.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove the vehicle. What now?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then switch off and leave it off. Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does shift the trouble out of your tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it stays recoverable far more frequently than drivers expect.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

It isn't a modification, so a drain and flush carried out properly does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one, which is another reason to leave the car turned off.

Two-stroke oil in the tank, and then home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a distinct fault and it doesn't put back what petrol has weakened. That tank still has petrol in it later on, and your pump still has to put up with it.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Wherever the vehicle is, our engineers drain and flush it there, so a drive to the main dealer does not come into it.

Is the vehicle still with you?

The engine stays off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, switch off, and no restarting the vehicle later on. This is recoverable from far more frequently than people fear, and a stationary, cold car is the best place to be in.
